Here's the next episode of Chordplay with The Chords Of Iron Maiden.
I've had lots of requests to feature Iron Maiden and in several ways, this is the first "Maiden" voyage for the LNL channel, as it's the first time we've focused on their music at this length and I can assure you there will be more material (in the near future) featuring this beyond-legendary metal group.
This episode targets several classic hits along with lesser-known Iron Maiden classics, which skim through their strongest decade of music - the ever-popular and glorious 1980s! Some of the chord-based ideas shared here come from Maiden standards such as 'Murders In The Rue Morgue,' 'Stranger In A Strange Land,' and 'The Number Of The Beast' - along with lesser-known fan-favorites such as 'Gangland,' The Clairvoyant,' and many more.
There's a lot you can gain/learn from studying a group as talented and respected as Iron Maiden. From aggressive power chord attacks, hard-hitting single-note riffs, and clean chord swirling around, to wild soloing, majestic-sounding harmony guitar parts, and so much more. There's a reason why this group is as popular and respected as they are - simply put, Iron Maiden rocks!
Give this episode a view, leave some comments and feedback, and please subscribe to Late Night Lessons - THANK YOU!

Both Smith and Murray are criminally underrated. And there is nothing like seeing a live Maiden show.

I've always been a Dave Murray fan. Then I joined an Iron Maiden cover band and I had to learn Adrian Smith's parts and solos, turns out I like Smith's solos much more. They're both damn good though.

Murray i think is overrated. Smith is so far beyond him as a guitar player and doesn't get recognized for it.

The band has a knack for writing anthemic tunes. Pedal tone riffs with a Queen sensibility. Listening to a crowd in Rio or Mexico belt out one of their melodies is a kin to a soccer crowd supporting their team. I love watching them play Wasted Years live. That tune encapsulates the bond between metal fan and band.

The first proper thing I learned to play as a kid was losfer words off the power slave album back in 1988, my friend Paul had worked most of the album out and showed me how to play it, he never carried on playing which was sad as he had so much ability. One night as I was playing it in my bedroom, the lads from the local band were walking past, back from the pub, and shouted up that I sounded good! I remember feeling so proud! Cheers for that memory. 👍🏼 goes without saying but excellent lesson as usual!

The first gig I ever attended was the Powerslave tour in Glasgow (UK) and it lit a lifelong love for metal and music in general. Shortly after, they brought out the Live After Death double album and to me it just captured that very first live music experience. Great times.

Love Iron Maiden ... especially their first 4 albums ... saw them for the first time in in 82/83 backing up 38 Special with Saxon opening up ... we left after Iron Maiden played and hung out by the bus until they came out ... saw them 3 more times with other touring acts that summer ... Dave Murray and Adrian Smith had an exceptional two guitar attack that made those first 4 albums timeless ... thanks for the content !!!

Must have been during the "Beast On The Road" tour in 1982, as that was their last tour where they opened up for someone else. In 1983 they toured in support of the Piece of Mind album ("World Piece Tour") in which they were the headliners. LUCKY YOU by the way!

The Number of the Beast verse rhythm is tricky to get right as a beginner, since it's in an odd time signature, and it's also mostly downpicked as well. Come to think of it, the verse (dirty guitar) rhythm on The Clairvoyant might be in the same time signature as well. I'm not sure. (Counting was clearly not one of my strong suits! The thing I like most about 'Maiden' is the interplay between the bass guitar and the drums...what fascinates me, in particular, is watching Nico McBrain playing Iron maiden songs on a 'basic drum kit' and the skill he shows with the 'limitation' of that kit...makes you wanna pick up drums. Go Maiden and hats off to Clive Burr and Nicko McBrain.

G n R were second on the bill incredibly! Helloween opened I think. And I got to see Dave Lee Roth, Vai, Sheehan ... Skyscraper record.. Kiss were on before Maiden... I wasnt too bothered about them TBH... But the rest man.... Amazing experience. Two people sadly died in some freak crowd accident so RIP to those guys. And RIP Eddie ... and Neil .... I always dug how a lot of the early metal bands used the top end of three-note power chords (Accept, Priest, Maiden, Lynch). Growing up in the bay area metal scene during the late 80's I learned to use three note power chords (1-5-1) then drop off the root to get that crisp "double stop" flavor. Not a lot of two-note power chords to be found. Thanks for the video and all the best from the Bay. MK

This will be the 1st time I come across a channel where same credit/love be given to both Priest and Maiden, usually people side by one. You have aced it high! these 2 bands have so many parallels and fans don't realise it actually! They are really the inventors of metal. 80's metal was truly the golden years spearheaded by these 2 giants if you ignore the hair metal secene, yet, there were also some highlights though. Also, late 70's Priest with Stained Class and Killing Machine must be given credit to have actually started it. It might sound that I am downplaying Sabbath but I am not, they invented the heavy. Keep on delivering the goods! Rock hard, run free bro!

Was beginning to ponder if you may one day do one of these for this band. So, finally for a cool deal and convenient as you point out some of the aspects of the Riggs lp covers and their indulgence into some dark aspects of history and classic literature in time for Halloween! 😎 Even if I am relatively familiar with most of the ones you covered, it is still good to watch another who knows what they are doing to perform the tunes, as it can illustrate something I had missed. But, I've never tinkered with Murders In The Rue Morgue a ole Poe inspired bit, and so that's a bonus for myself in what you illuminated there. Just glad to see you finally doing something with their plethora of material to work with as a number two is no big deal to manage when you should wish to do another. However, I must admit that I'd still like to you discuss Led Zeppelin further than you did in the one I am aware of between chords & licks. Some of Page's later orchestrations with the guitar parts are a bit of a challenge to the casual guitarist such as myself has now become beyond concerning myself with my own original bits. Good show, nonetheless, and rock on!

Hey Dave, if you like the 2 Minutes to Midnight riff, go back and listen to Accept's Flash Rockin' Man from the Restless and Wild album. Virtually the same riff, and it predates 2mtm. Not saying IM stole it because it seems like a riff any guitarist might trip over, but it seems Wolf Hoffmann tripped over it first.

I really enjoy your videos, excited to work my way through this one! It would be nice see a video of some of the more obscure NWOBHM bands like Wolf (Black Axe) they never got the credit they deserved. They recorded one album called Edge Of The World and it's track for track amazing. There's also boot leg from the BBC sessions with John Peel, the last track from the bootleg is a song Called Night From The Blue and it's a masterpiece. If you've never heard of them you should check them out.

That riff in gangland- I’d explain it this way... a piece of A minor 7, D7 in second inversion, and then a piece of F/A. That’s a lot simpler than saying the D7 is an A minor 6, and the last chord is an A minor b13. Love the channel man!

I went in the US Navy in 1982, so MY rock n roll days were short lived oversea's and i caught basically hit songs here and there and Yokosuka Naval Base had the honch area outside the base where they had a hard rock cafe and thats is where i would go to rock out when we had the chance.lol I am just now getting back rediscovering rock n roll and i play a telecaster and a stratocaster and have both all upgraded
