On his "unplugged" live performance, Chris Cornell (Audioslave/Soundgarden) made a great version of a very popular Michael Jackson song called Billie Jean. Clearly, he made one of the best covers in history.

People are complaining that Cornell made this song depressing. They fail to see how he stripped it down and brought the lyrics to the forefront and how depressing the lyrics are. He gives it blues and exposed the conflict in it. I think I love this version more than the original.

Rez, yeah this song was dark even when I hear mj sing it . It really great paranoid dark song. I wish people realized just how dark and paranoid MJ song writing was, AND that he did his best writing when he writes depressing paranoia driven music, not those sappy ballads about healing all the kids and animals.
@Studio2770

I've listened to MJ songs a lot but never noticed the darkness. I suppose this is the one song that I did sense it. Cornell brought it up to the forefront.

I grew up listening to Cornell from his temple of the dog days all the way up to his untimely demise. He will never know just how many lives his music has touched and influenced. I believe his existence has made a positive impact on humanity through his art and for that i hope he is in a better place!!! Godspeed Chris, your music will live on forever!!!

This song, no matter who sings it, tells a story....a strange yet common one. This is some powerful shit! Michael Jackson's funk-soul original with that killer bassline, a man tells on himself, dispite all denials. And in Cornell's bitter acoustic rant, one begins to believe... maybe ...the words are true. Always were.

MJ made you wanna dance with his original version. In Chris' version his voice is so powerful and emotionally charged that it makes you share the anguish and the pain in those lyrics and I think that's a much harder thing to do and more appropriate given the subject matter of the song. If MJ was here he'd listen with pride and shed tears with us. RIP Chris. You are sorely missed.

Chris Cornell was such a unique talent, a true one of a kind. The world truly is a darker place without his voice.

This song gives me chills everytime I hear it. You can feel how much the music means to him, and when it's just raw like this it makes it so much more powerful. Music is an escape for so many people when it just puts you in a trance and makes you feel innate. RIP Chris

He makes this song have a totally different meaning just by the way he sang it. The world misses his talent.

Such a great musician. Such a sad ending, too. His music, his versions of others music keep his legacy alive.
