Classics. Restomods. Replicas. Continuations. All have the gorgeous vintage looks, but each is fundamentally different under the skin. Chris Harris and Top Gear Magazine editor Jack Rix discuss the differences of things like the Alfaholics GTA-R, Eagle Lightweight GT and GTO Engineering's recreation of the Ferrari 250 SWB.

That comment wasn't at all accurate though was it? The Countach is mid-engined, not rear-engined, so in fact the engine would not be the wrong way around at all. And even if it was, Ferrari takes drive out of the front of the same engine in the GTC4lusso, so it wouldn't matter anyway. Furthermore, previous generation port-injected versions of the same engine and even the direct-injected version in the 599 could be optioned with manual boxes, so that would not be out of the question either I'm sure. All of this ignores the fact that exactly the same engine, presumably with minor alterations (e.g. cams, intake and exhaust and ECU map) is mid-mounted in the Ferrari laferrari AND the Apollo! These videos are doing their very best to convince me that Chris is really just a bit of a grumpy old git now, as much as I don't want to believe it. Come on, a little enthusiasm and fewer snide comments would be really appreciated!

@@richardcarter8801 You would certainly be able to fit an engine in the enginebay of the lambo, but probably not the one he wanted since the gearbox is quite a long one. Could probably get another one, but would be tricky to get it right with the driveshaft positions. It's probably doable, but loads of work when you can just put any other rear engine into it way easier. But what do I know. I only work on my old merc and VW, that's a whole different beast. :D I agree with you though, Chris is a bit grumpy lately.

As a restorer and custom builder of motorcycles, I can emphatically say that "Resto-Mod" applies more to older vehicles that are restored with slight modernised modifications included in the process (i.e. Restored-Modified)... not just newer vehicles made to look more vintage as Chris stated (all due respect to Mr Harris, he's an absolute gentleman and a scholar and knows his cars). Great vid. Cheers from Aussieland 🤙🍻

Totally agree and super surprised that Chris doesn't immediately clarify the difference between: "restomods" as a OLD TO NEW specific thing > restoring an old vehicle by enhancing it with newer technologies to improve its performance > ALFAHOLICS or MST for exemple, VS "backdating" as a more NEW TO OLD casual thing > give a recent vehicle a vintage look thanks to aesthetic customization > very common on the Porsche scene, particularly with, for example, the large number of 964 or 911 type Gs aesthetically dressed in a classic way /front and rear bumpers, fenders, wheels, etc... And sometimes, talented entrepreneurs combine the two, by deciding to push the sliders to the max > SINGER or RUF as sports car manufacturer, correct ?! Anyway, truly and full respect for Chris 🙌. Cheers 🏁

I just think it’s a shame that cars that can give you a real thrill and even be scary because they’re not equipped with all these electronic nannies and cars that let you, the driver do the work instead of 150 computers onboard are completely disappearing. Except for the new T50 from Gordon Murray..🙏 for me personally, when I drive the 992..even though I’m way faster on a lap with that thing, I enjoy “working” in a older (slower) 911 more. It’s just gives you more satisfaction, because you..the driver has the have complete control over the car.

The W124 500E with the M119 V8 engine would accommodate the M113 V8 almost as a direct bolt in replacement, with very little work comparible to the newer 4.0 biturbo that Chris references. Don't forget the M113 featured in the SLR McLaren with a supercharger and over 600HP. Many many donor cars around, every E55K, CL55K, S55K and SL55K. They all have around 500hp from the factory but even with standard supercharger and injectors they can achieve a reliable 600hp with a smaller pulley on the charger and a remap. Also, arguably a better sound than the more modern AMG lump, especially when the older M113K had an X pipe fitted. Combination of supercharger scowl and V8 AMG burble... excellent! I think I'm onto something here.

I totally agree. A restomod is a restored old car with newer technology under the skin. The term has been around a lot longer then 'designer' custom car shops have been applying it to toys for billionaires. It's straight out of the hot rod world. Does the 'backdate' thing exist as a style of building cars or a type of car anywhere outside the 911 and maybe the Jag world? It is just something that people have done inmost or maybe all classic car scenes for ever. Typically replacing impact bumpers with what preceeded them, and or fitting some older style trim or panels. Chirs - I like your TV and reviews a lot, and I love Singer 911's (even though I also think the whole 'billionaire budget custom car' thing is kind of ruining things for the custom car builder with a more typical budget), but your lack of a modified car / car building background shows through here!

@@richardjones38 good point about Porsche and backdating. Some brands do mild backdating because of the big bumper changeover (280Z to 240Z, Alpha Romeo, Jaguar, etc) but nobody does this to the extent that Porsche does. I believe this is because of the long tenure of the air-cooled 911 body.

I think for the restomods when transplanting engine from one brand into another, some kind of tenuous link is needed between the brands and the engine to make it feel legit. Examples; Stuffing Honda engines into classic Minis is fine due to the link up with Honda and Rover in the late 80s/early 90s. Stuffing a McLaren 3.8 v8 into any S Platform Nissan such as a Silvia would be great as the McLaren engine can trace its routes back through Tom Walkinshaw Racing to the Nissan VRH engines used in many of the late 80s LeMans prototypes. Final example and possibly the most tenuous I can think of, Transplanting the turbo SAAB 9-5 B235 250hp engine into a Dolomite Sprint as that engines heritage starts with the Triumph Slant 4. I’m sure there are many more examples out there but I feel some kind of tenuous link is needed to justify a cross brand change.

Electronic rearview mirrors so you can actually see out of it and full sensors all around it for reversing, etc. Automatic parking and valet mode. An actual Countach you can live with. Also keeps the Countach heritage as the SV's engine was the last one Lambo made that was based on Miura block, so the same block used in Countach.

EXACTLY, I think he was limiting himself to brand new engines and so came to the conclusion there is nothing exciting out there. But just because its "restomod" doesnt mean it has to have a brand new engine IMO.

For the record, the term ‘Restomod’ was coined by Ron Bramlett, the proprietor of Mustangs Plus in Stockton, CA. Others may have updated older cars with a few modern bits, but it is he who first came up with the notion of completely integrating modern engine, suspension, steering, brakes, and interior components into a single, cohesive, unified package, resulting in a 1960s car that legitimately was every bit the equal of then-new 1990s cars. His work was routinely covered by Mustang Monthly magazine, who spread his description for his creations as ‘Restomods’ and made it enter the common lexicon. While Euro cars like Singer Porsches and Eagle Jaguars and Alfaholics Alfa are truly remarkable, they are about 30 years late to the party!

I definitely love the restomod idea. The fact that we can have 21st century engineering while still keeping that gorgeous lines and curves is a total no brainer for me. For once, I imagined a restomod Countach with Aventador mechanicals and a restomod Testarossa with F12berlinetta or 812 Superfast mechanicals.

Any of the cars named above plus some new options like Lancia Aurelia with small V8, maybe BMW 635 CSI or Alpina B9 3.5, Peugeot 406 Coupe with potent engine, that Lancia Integrale restomod, something nice done with Jaguar XJ6 or XJS... so many options! But I would also be tempted to put one electric version to maybe older Rolls or Bentley.

I think that would fly over a bit better since Ferrari has been owned by Fiat since the 60s. Whereas Lambo and Ferrari have always been separate entities and rivals. Putting a ferrari engine into a lambo would be the ultimate affront.

If we're playing the same manufacturer game, you could get a very similar car (restomod 205) using a 4th gen civic (EF) hatch shell and a Type R swap. No one is making them as a business, but that approach is very popular in America for individual project cars. Most of those owners are more interested in the driving dynamics than fit and finish, though, so the interiors tend to be lackluster to save money.

K20's have been Europe's LS engine equivalent for a while. They have been swapped on every car imaginable. I met a kid in Sweden years ago who put one in a Volvo 740. Now, a LS would be too much of a stretch to put inside a 205 engine bay. But doable...

Sad to hear some car lovers falling out of love for new performance cars and dreaming about owning older stuff. I’m 19 years old, so I’m into the modern cars. Is that something I can keep on loving and dreaming of, or should I throw it all away and lust after these “pure driver’s cars” instead of “fancy horsepower-chasing (0-62mph) toys”? That’s what lots of people say about modern cars.

Agree with almost all of that except the S85 V10 swap. Been done into almost every BMW chassis already, but it's severely lacking in torque and very fragile. The S38 engine is much stronger, and makes more low-end torque. Plus you can shove up to 98mm stroke in it, S85 strokers max out at 86mm, and if you think the S85 is fragile when N/A, just wait until you boost it... whereas the S38 is basically a big German 2JZ, it loves being turbocharged. A 4256cc stroker with 12psi boost would make an easy 600rwhp.

OK here goes me own recipe; Jag xj coupe from like -75. No vinyl top. XJ series 1 front and dash - the early chrome edged meter bezels and likewise straight exhaust pipes. Propelled by a genuine 12 cyl Jag engine mated to a 6 speed Tremec manual; however stripped and supercharged with like a Megasquirt injection and ecu (600 -ish Bhp on wheels). Bespoke LED front and rear lights. Wheels should be chrome original XJ12 ones, however rebuilt into 18' and widened accordingly... Etc. Most of the underpinnings do their job, would just go for urethane bushings, Coilovers and uprated brakes (but I'd stick with the inboard rear brakes ;-) ). Colour scheme; BRG with tan interior. That would be my favourite Build as of now ;-) 🏁

Restomods, I think, are the answer to the problem of "Don't meet your heroes, because they'll disappoint you". Nothing from the 70s, 80s or even 90s will live up to modern expectations of performance, handling, braking or reliability, so the cars we put on pedestals and worship will feel crap when we finally get to drive them. Restomods solve that and I think they're fantastic.
