Chris Harris joins Top Gear Magazine Editor Jack Rix to discuss the new Tesla Model S 'Plaid' - a revision of the Model S with 1100bhp, a 0-60 time under two seconds, and a steering wheel suspiciously devoid of its roundness. So, what do you think of the 'Plaid'? Let us know in the comments.
Also, if you're in the UK, don't miss the new series of Top Gear, available on iPlayer right now: bit.ly/TG-S30
P.S. It was quite chilly in the hanger that day, hence why the boys are wrapped up.

I absolute Disagree. The most fun u have with a Supercar is, when u drive alone. Would u love driving Cars, u would understand. As they said, the Tesla can nothing than accelerate. And even that’s only as long the Batteries getting to hot, or to low. If u ask me, a Car is way way more than just accelerating. BUT, this 9sec acceleration is maybe addictive.

@_r0b0warrior_
@_r0b0warrior_ 3 жыл бұрын
Except that there's more to a lightweight Italian sports car than pure acceleration. Here you learn to drive a car that has more dimensions to driving due to it's mechanical nature. So the dopamine rush is from adapting to the engine character, matching revs with every gear shift, perfecting heel-and-toe as you trail brake into a corner, whilst managing the inertia of the car with your steering inputs. The car has its own character/balance when operating at the limit of tyre adhesion, and you feel this feedback in form of high frequency vibrations through your hands on the steering wheel. You can let the adhesion break and an oversteering car will have its rear step out. You can control this with throttle (minding the engine character) and steering inputs, and leave the corner as a hero. Or you can ride along the limit, making sure to break the traction just by 5-10% for the optimal grip, and leave the corner with the biggest smug grin. In both cases, a smile is garunteed as you have perfected the different dimensions that come with driving such a mechanical car. It is pointless to compare these dopamine inducing driving characteristics to a one-trick-pony electric car whose sole purpose is transportation from A to B, when both of these cars operate in different dimensions.

@huntercook6605
@huntercook6605 3 жыл бұрын
@@replynotificationsdisabled Because a "turbo" is an actual device. It's short for "turbocharger" which is a literal turbine pushed by exhaust gas that compresses the intake air. More air in the cylinders allows more fuel to be burned, which increases power. Since all of that is specific to internal combustion engines, it's ridiculous to apply the word to electric cars. But unfortunately Porsche actually crossed that Rubicon several years ago, when they started turbocharging the engines in many base models too; since they still reserved the "turbo" badge for the top-of-range models, it had already lost meaning. This is worse of course; at this point it feels like they're just laughing at all of us who like to think we know anything about cars.

By that measure, EVs come out ahead 99+% of the time. Charging an EV is a parallel task while pumping petrol is a sequential task. With an EV, you plug it in, then start doing other things, shopping, working, sleeping, etc. With petrol, you have to go to a station, potentially wait for a pump, start pumping gas, wait for it to finish, and leave the station. I switched to an EV in 2019. Since then, I estimated that I saved around 5 hours of time spent pumping a year. That's 5 hours of additional time with family, or friends, or a hobby. This also includes road trips as I simply plug in, go to the bathroom, get something to eat, then when I'm back at my car, I drive off. The 5 hours also doesnt even take into account that I had to go out of my way to pump petrol, so that time could easily be doubled or tripled. And, on top of that, there is little maintenance, no oil changes, no air/oil/fuel filters to change, so that's easily another 5-10 hours saved a year minimum.
@DeathBringer769
@DeathBringer769 2 жыл бұрын
@@undead890 With a decent pump it takes only about 2 minutes to fill a tank from empty though. Also, in full service states, you can go get food, go to the bathroom, etc, while your car is filling up anyway (someone else pumps your gas for you.) And it doesn't seem fair to list "I had to go out of my way to pump petrol" as only a downside for gas on road trips, and ignoring it for electric. If you're not charging at home, you still have to go out of your way to a charging station and hook the thing up yourself, similar to getting gas, either way. You still have to go out of your way, arguably moreso since it's still easier to find a gas station along *any* potential route you're taking rather than a quick charging station, which are still becoming more common but it's still not as widespread everywhere as gas stations. Hardcore EV users still plan their routes around where the nearby quick charge stations are (which is going out of your way to find time, taking the time to plan that out, etc) rather than being able to take it for granted there will always be one along any route you take without having to go out of your way (like with gas stations.)

Some observations as I recently picked up a used 2016 Model S P90D with Lubricous plus and I also have a 997.2 Carrera 4S, a couple of BMW M-sport cars (E60,E90) and a couple of Audis (B7) (all 6-speed manuals except an Audi Q7). First, 0-60 in 2.6 seconds is already physically uncomfortable and largely a party trick. But you don't have to use it all, I regularly just pull away from lights to 60 or so in a "real" 4 to 5 seconds or so - enough to leave everyone way behind. And occasionally blast from 40 to 60 in one second. But my son said it best - the Tesla is really fun to drive once a week. The rest of the time, the involvement we get with the 6-speed manual and the much better dynamics of the other cars is just more fun and more satisfying. But I might say the same thing about a bloated, automatic transmission F90 M5. Secondly, EV range is not really an issue if you have other cars for a long road trip as 99% of the time you are charging in your own garage. So don't be afraid to go with a non-Tesla EV unless its your only car and you really need the charging network for long trips. My real world range varies a lot - and if I am driving spiritedly and its winter time (colder weather), its really only like 170 miles between charges - which again is plenty for daily driving and errands. I know when the newer ones become used, my Model S re-sale will go down - but maybe as you speculate, I can upgrade batteries or tech in the future. Final thought - someone needs to make an EV with intentionally limited range for daily local use so that it can be around 3,000 lbs. in weight or less - that will help with dynamics. Also someone (just like Jeep Magneto - hopefully Porsche) will put a 6-speed manual in an EV with ability to select a lower RPM limit to encourage shifting. Maybe even emulate an idle motor speed so you have to mesh the clutch. It can be done. But I also agree retrofitting EV drivetrains in already existing cars will be a thing and if nothing else to lower the carbon footprint of manufacturing a whole new car..

@@craigix Driving a manual is involving, life affirming, not boring. Are you going to live life "above the API" or submissively go into the Matrix when computers do everything for you? One day you won't even have to drive at all, or know the joy of building something. One day you might not even have to eat, or make love to your girlfriend as procreation will be automated. Humans need to do stuff to be human, to feel, to live. Rolling down a window with a crank is no big deal by the way. I would gladly take a visceral life affirming driving experience where I have to roll down the window than to be driven around in a sterile car. That's why people still ride and race horses, because its involving and exciting. I am not a luddite either, I am software engineer, I work in advanced technology everyday. But pick your tools wisely, some tools improve your ability as a human or make you more productive. Other tools just take away ability from you as a human. Agree with your point on retrofitting. There are already EV specialists who can retrofit newer higher capacity batteries in old Nissan Leafs, and this needs to be common across all manufacturers to reduce resource consumption and carbon emissions (but car manufacturers won't because it doesn't sell cars). Also agree that, for most people, most trips are well within the range of most EVs and not necessary to buy a Tesla.
