Learn how to turn off your airbag light and fix a horn that doesn't work by replacing your clock spring. Replacing a clock spring is very simple, saves us over $600 and takes less than an hour. I will show you how to safely remove the airbag and steering wheel so you can replace the clockspring at home using common hand tools.
To figure out I had a bad clock spring, I used an obd2 scanner to scan the airbag light and got codes b1801 and b1811 which is an open squib circuit, which means the clock spring is bad. Another way to tell the clock spring is bad is the horn doesn't work and/or the steering wheel buttons don't work.
OBD2 Scanner (BlueDriver): amzn.to/2q5sC1Z
Service Manual for Torque Specs: haynes.com/en-us/
Steering wheel puller: amzn.to/2NUbofS
Torque Wrench: amzn.to/33B3dvA
Ratchet: amzn.to/2NzwZLt
Threadlocker: amzn.to/2p7qKW3
Clock spring: amzn.to/2p53acj

Hey Chris Fix. May 28, 2024. My cruise control quit working, I replaced the switch and the clock spring per your video and it works perfectly on my 14 yr old 294,000 mile Toyota Tacoma. The dealer I bought it from wanted $1300.00 parts/ labor and 1/2 a day to fix it. With your video and approximately $50.00 parts and 1 hour of my time- DONE ! Thanks a million.

@KelMaster Construction I've replaced hundreds of airbags for the Takata recall and have never disconnected the battery. Dealer techs wont do that because we are on flat rate and time is money. Plus customers get upset if they loose their stations lol. If you're doing it at home I recommend it though. We did have one tech turn an airbag ECU upside down with the ignition on and it tripped the rollover sensor which deployed all the airbags. Always take the key out of the ignition at least

My dad's been working at a parts store for 12 years or so. My daughter had a 2007 Dodge Caliber given to her and I wanted to fix her cruise control, so I bought a cruise control switch and replaced it. When that didn't fix it, I learned that along with the cruise, the horn didn't work and the airbag light was on. I had already watched this video once, but found it again and the rest is history. Fixed all those problems for $26 and had no problems whatsoever. Saved me a ton.

I avoid aftermarket parts as a rule - too many _really_ bad experiences - but in this case I agree with Chris. The high failure rate on the OEM one is enough to get our attention, and the ease of replacement, low impact if it does fail, and the enormous price difference make it attractive indeed.
@Swordie100
@Swordie100 4 жыл бұрын

@@jdigitalseven7 OEM parts get upgraded to fix issues? This video is literally living proof that this is not always the case.. Notice how I said aftermarket, not knockoff parts or discount store. @@jdigitalseven7 what??? I think the best proof that's not entirely true is bulletproof diesel parts for mid 2000s ford f250s. They fixed the EGR issue every single truck had and they're all aftermarket. I know it's not "knock off" but it sure isnt OEM. Its better.

Chris, thanks for your clear guidance on how to proceed safely and do the clock spring in my driveway; saved me hundreds of dollars. This is a job any careful, sober auto mechanic can do without much difficulty. Hardest part for me was overcoming stripped threads on the steering wheel (someone had already been there before me . . .) I used 2 other gear pullers until I got the steering wheel started off the splines. You make GREAT videos--please keep it up. When I need to do something I have never done, I always check to see if you have a video (even if it is NOT my car). I have a 1996 Chrysler Town and Country; by late 2023, I have replaced about 95% of ALL the parts in this van--249K miles and going strong. Thanks to videos and other mechanics who have taught me all I needed to know.

Fabulous vid, pal. I'm 63 and was a mechanic back when we used dinosaurs to pull us around. Last time I pulled a steering wheel, it was unimaginable to not have a wheel puller. Plus, it was daunting to pull an airbag. Didn't wanna kill myself. Think I'll save myself about $450 and rockauto the clockspring and do this my own damn self. Thank you, sir.

Thank you so much for this informative video, it was kinda amazing how many things it fixed at once. It fixed just about every button on my steering wheel, and also the airbag light. I paid $10.00 plus shipping for a brand new same exact part as a factory clock spring, it even came with a 1 year warranty!! Total savings was well north of $500 from the dealer price parts and labor. Had to buy a couple tools, total cost was about $33.00 tools and parts. An absolutely amazing savings, and was easy due to your comprehensive information. Thanks a million Chris!! My car is a 2008 Toyota Prius, Gen 2.
