Doing things by accident or just because it sounds funny has actually progressed the campaign more than actually trying to do stuff seriously in my experience. Of course we had a great DM that allowed really odd things to happen.

To be fair, Guardians of the Galaxy itself always felt like a perfect example of a well-oiled, functioning DnD party, so it makes sense that it would draw a lot of comparisons. The use of (relatively) contemporary music adds to the parallel.

Guardians of the Galaxy 1 did a good job of pacing, tension, action, and comic relief. Unfortunately the studios thought it's smashing success was due to comedy and not comic **relief**. GG1 had me both sitting at the edge of my seat and laughing at other times. Later Marvel movies, including GG placed emphasis on comedy even through action scenes that should have been tense moments. The result is something rather bland. D&D got the formula right. I hope they don't forget it, if there is a sequel or a series.

This movie was surprisingly fun and charming. It’s not LOTR, but it’s not trying to be. The jokes land, the CG is passable, the world is colorful and fun, and the characters are actually pretty likable. Is it kind of juvenile and safe? Yea. It’s a family film for sure, but it’s kind of like marvel films in that it’s easy to forget you’re watching a family blockbuster. 7/10.

This was VERY high on my "Please Don't Suck" list, and it not sucking is enough for me. Hugh Grant gets to chew the scenery? Sweet! Chris Pine as a sarcastic, motormouth pain-in-the-ass example of one of my favorite D&D classes? Nifty! Justice Smith as a Wild Magic Sorcerer (NOT A WIZARD... Wizards learn their magic, Sorcerers are born with it) who's also Elminster's grandson or whatever? HELL YES, SIGN ME UP FOR THAT. Also, you had me at "Guardians Of The Galaxy, But Sword-And-Sorcery Rather Than Sci-Fi." Sounds like a good time at the local movie-house to me.

Really had fun watching this movie. I was surprised by the depth given to some of the character's conflicts. Specifically, I thought the mage's arc surrounding self-confidence and the bard's (Pine) arc about struggling with the loss of his wife and redefining family were much more well developed than I'd expected them to be. Definitely worth seeing in the theatre.

It definitely doesn't capture Forgotten Realms as it is portrayed in the novels or CRPGs, but it certainly accomplishes its comedic goals. If you go to watch it for a laugh rather than drama, you're probably going to enjoy it.

@@George_Fl0yd no they didn't. The directors said that as a joke albeit a very bad joke but still a joke nonetheless. None of the male characters in this movie are emasculated.

One the male characters lacks confidence and has to learn to obtain it in order to become one of the most powerful. That's not emasculating men, that's teaching men to have confidence. Also Chris Pines' character is the brains and heart of the group. He's the leader who comes up with all the plans an gets them to push through when they all feel like giving up. In no one does this movie say that men are worthless.

There was a moment during the final battle of D&D Honor Among Thieves where the entire audience erupted in cheers in applause. I cannot remember a movie, outside of MCU, that has done that. And it wasn’t some big Easter egg or a famous D&D spell or monster appearing. It was simply because in that moment of the film our heroes, whom we have grown shockingly attached to over the last 2 hours, achieved something that seemed impossible at the start and there was such catharsis that we could do nothing but cheer. Earlier in the movie there was an appearance by a thing whose very existence was so goddamn funny that the entire audience started laughing and sustained that laughter for approximately eight minutes. Until this thing was gone, we were all in hysterics. My ribs hurt from this stupid ass thing showing up. And this movie isn’t lacking in big Easter eggs and mythology callbacks for Dungeons and Dragons fans. But those weren’t the parts that resonated so deeply with this audience. It was well told jokes and satisfying character development paid off in excessively amusing ways. This movie is a fucking gem. The best time I’ve had at a movie this year so far (even above, surprisingly enough, John Wick) and I feel like it’ll be really hard to top.

Speaking of MCU breaking ground for this movie, did anyone catch the 2 scenes referencing Avengers movies? During the final big fight, camera pans around heroes teaming up to take down a single big bad, like Avengers fighting Thanos on Titan. Then owlbear slamming big bad, like Hulk slamming Loki.

But for anyone who wants to see more D&D content, The Legend Of Vox Machina is a fantastic animated series, based on the first campaign of Critical Role. It's got an absolutely stacked cast and does a great job of translating in game moments into animation.
