Supposedly, Christopher Nolan wanted Bowie for the role so badly that he flew himself out to Bowie's home to personally pitch the movie to him in hopes of signing him and practically begged to get him for the role unknowing of what he would do if Bowie ultimately said no. www.cinemablend.com/new/Why-Christopher-Nolan-Begged-David-Bowie-Star-Prestige-106927.html

Dude. Think about it. That was probably Borden's double at the funeral (Fallon), not Borden himself. He couldn't know what knot was tied; he didn't do the tying. The complete line after, "Which knot did you tie?", goes, "I keep asking myself that and...I'm sorry I just don't know." If that was Fallon at the funeral, maybe Borden legitimately wouldn't tell him which knot he tied. Here I was thinking Borden was being a smuggy-obsessed, heartless magician in this scene, when it really could've been Fallon just being sincere.

@@nikhilpatil9337 If you have seen the movie it's the scene where Hugh Jackman's character talks to Tesla (David Bowie) about making him a machine that duplicates him,and Tesla asks him if he had considered the cost that machine would have on his life and Hugh Jackman thinks he is talking about the price,It's a very profound scene in my opinion,that scene is so great in context I don't think I explained it that well!

@@eliana3589 This was my initial understanding of this dialogue as well, but after watching the film again, I think Tesla at this point in the film did not in fact know the machine would function this way - Angier actually wanted a machine that would simply teleport him and that was what Tesla was trying to make. This is why Tesla believes the machine is not working when testing it on Angier's hat and Alley's cat (nice pun there, Mr. Nolan); he only realizes the machine makes copies when they find the pile of hats and the two cats outside. So what I believe Tesla was referring to in the above dialogue was actually a more personal view - that having a machine that performs an unbelievable function would put Angier in the same position that Tesla was in relation to the rest of the scientific world and especially Edison, i.e. they would turn on him and try to destroy him, forcing him into the same kind of secluded existence that Tesla has. It is a great little exchange delivered perfectly by Bowie and Jackman and, when combined to the multiple references by Tesla to Angier's "obsession", which he recognizes all too well, hints that Tesla and Edison had virtually the same kind of antagonism as Borden and Angier.

This movie's twist could have come across as really, really dumb, but it doesn't, because the movie doesn't cheat with it. The twist isn't just the end of the movie, it's the whole movie. Every scene is crafted with the twist in mind, and it's absolutely airtight.
@windowsVD
@windowsVD 7 жыл бұрын
Oddly enough, the twist was the biggest point of contention from critics when the film came out because they felt that it was a cheat.
@PassTheMarmalade1957
@PassTheMarmalade1957 7 жыл бұрын
The Tesla machine was a pretty weird element, so I wouldn't be surprised if some people thought putting in the real twist after that was a bit much, but the twist itself is really well executed, especially, as Chris says, when you watch the movie twice.
@Fir3fly798
@Fir3fly798 6 жыл бұрын
flmvdvsrg dude I totally agree with everything you're saying. I was on board the whole movie even though I basically guessed the twist pretty early on until the Tesla machine came into play. It's a magic duplicating machine and there's no explanation for it and we as an audience are just supposed to except that when the whole movie is about magic tricks and deceit? He rubs it in Bale's characters face in prison that his trick is better when it's not even a trick! He resorted to literal magic to pull this off! How is that a better trick? That's literal magic, there's no illusion; and I thought the whole point of this was to outsmart eachother. That's like turning on god mode when you're losing to your friend in a game, you didn't REALLY win. And why should we root for Bale's character again? He did unintentionally kill his wife (I think the implication was that his twin brother didn't know which knot to tie for the act, thus tying the wrong one and killing her. You'd think after that Hugh Jackman would deserve and explanation and to know he's working with twins). And we're supposed to believe that Tesla created this priceless piece of machinery and gave it to a magician to do whatever he wants with it and to use it for his act? There's a ton wrong with this film, the twin twist falls flat considering that Hugh Jackman was literally murdering himself/his duplicate every night just frame Bale's character for murder, and considering that was literal magic. Yes there was a lot of interesting elements added to the film with the twin angle, especially rewatching the scenes, but there's also a lot of unanswered questions with that too (like when Bale and Jackman were still working together, why not let Bale in on the secret and they could have had a huge act together?). But really I was done after the magic duplication device Tesla made. That ruined the film for me. There's sooooo many things wrong with the movie when that comes in.
@johnjsal
@johnjsal 6 жыл бұрын
For me, part of the brilliance of the twist is that Jackman's character went to SO much effort and expense to try to duplicate Bale's character's trick that he practically invented magic to do it. But pretty much in the beginning of the movie we are told by Cain's character that the trick is simple, he just uses a double. It's Jackman's unwillingness to accept such a simple explanation that drives him to create something so fantastic, when it wasn't really necessary at all. It sort of underlines the basic premise of all magic acts: the explanation is right there in front of you, but you often don't (or in this case won't) see it.

I totally agree, but I also think that that is the brilliance of Hugh Jackmans character. He starts out unwilling to kill even a dove, something that I actually liked about his character at the beginning, and then, by the end, he's literally murdering himself during every performance. Its hard to tell how unethical that is when you think about it. Did one of the clones consent to being in the box? Or was it, "surprise! You are now going to die." Throughout the entire movie I thought that Jackman was a better guy than Christian Bale. He wouldn't get his hands dirty the same way Bale does. But by the end, you have no idea who is the better man.

One of my favorite parts about the Prestige is the theme of the "man in the box". They first bring this up when Borden has to kill one bird in order to make the other one reappear. Then it becomes a problem for Angier when his drunk double gets the applause and he has to bow to no one under the stage. Then Angier has to kill the double every time he does the real transported man, just like Borden was doing with the birds. And in the end we find out that Borden has dealt with this problem by having two men live one life, and all of the problems that has caused him throughout the movie. For any magician the question is, what do you do about the man in the box? Or are you the one who is stuck becoming the man in the box?

Best movie about magicians by far! Christopher Nolan directed this movie magnificiently. Directors and Magicians are very similiar to another. Both have to play with the attention of the audience and direct them in the way you want. You give them a frame work and you play with it, only then to destroy their espectation. Just a brilliant movie and a passionate director. Thumbs Up :D

Freaking finally reviewed The Prestige, the best Nolan film ever (imo). I remember this came out when I was about 11, and my parents loved this movie, but were never quite able to explain why. I watched it soon after they bought the DVD, and also enjoyed it because I knew instinctually that this wasn't like other films, because it tricked me. But at that age, I didn't understand the trick, the character motivations, or the ending at all. Watched it again when I was 15, and loved it. Watched it again a year ago when I was 19, and have since pretty much seen this as a perfect film. The direction by Nolan is masterful. He truly is a magician.

To me it’s near perfect for the only reason that the movie could’ve had better visuals, I understand that it was supposed to have that old feel to it and that this was before Chris used imax cameras but if it had visuals on the same level as inception or interstellar then it would be a 10/10 for me and probably In my top 10 films of all time, still as it is a 9.5/10 is fantastic. This is just my opinion tho and I fully respect yours.

I love the cockiness of the first line "are you watching closely?" and the reality that, while we paid such fine attention to the tricks the characters performed, we didn't pay nearly enough attention to Alfred's fairly visible clues of him being a twin. I love how Nolan builds his films fundamentally from fascinating concepts that dominate the puzzles of his stories (ie: what is a dream and what is reality? or is our idea of objective reality totally controlled by ourselves and others?).

Christian Bale's performance in this movie is the best I have ever seen from any actor, and it is only after 3-4 times of watching this movie that you realize that Bale has a slightly different persona depending on which twin he is playing. When he plays the twin that loves Rebecca Hall, he is fucking convincing the way he conveys love, and the scene where it is the other twin, even when he says "I love you" with a smile to Rebecca Hall, you know he does not really mean it. You as a viewer know it before Rebecca Hall's character says "you don't mean it". I do not know why Nolan does not work with Bale anymore. But the Prestige exponentially grew on me because of Bale's genius. There are other amazing performances in this movie that I acknowledged on first viewing itself. But Bale makes it so much amazing with every movie.

By far my favorite movie (next to The Lion King of course). No matter how many times you watch it you notice something new! As a matter of fact, the movie is better the second time! This movie is full of absolutely fantastic performances from Christian Bale to Andy Serkis. I was blown away however by Hugh Jackman, Rebecca Hall and David Bowie, their portrayals of these characters was truly mesmerizing to watch as their stories unfold. This in my eyes, this is the most underrated film of all time. Christopher Nolan is an absolute genius and fully blew me away.

I've been WAITING since I started watching your reviews for you to touch on this film. I was wondering what your take on it would be. The Prestige is my all-time FAVORITE movie of all time. I saw it the first time and had been tracking with the film as well as the plot twist at the end but I was still dumbfounded when the credits started rolling because of how masterfully it's handled. The script, organic acting, camerawork, disorienting plot, cinematography, sets and overall world of this film completely engross me every time I watch it. I look for a new detail each time because the power of motif (i.e. the bird trick, which is my favorite one) in this film is what makes it great every time I watch it again. I've seen it numerous times, don't watch it for a while and then think, "Maybe it's not that great..." And then I put it in, watch it again and think, "Nope, still amazing." Part of the reason why it was underrated it because The Illusionist came out the same year, which is a good movie, too, but I don't believe it's as good. This one is a masterpiece and I'm proud to have it in the #1 slot in my top favorite movies of all time.
