In this video, I'm forging a bickern. If you are into forging hardy tools, this is a great one to have. The bick anvil is known by several names... bick iron stake, stake anvil, bick horn, bickern anvil, or cone anvil.
In general, a bick iron is a large tapered bar. Bick irons are custom sized to fit in the anvils hardy hole. If you don't have a bick iron stake yet, go ahead and forge one! A bick iron tool is very hand to use. The bick iron uses includes making bends for something that needs a tight radius.
Sometimes you can pick up a bick iron anvil at an auction for cheap, because not everyone knows what it is. A stake anvil can be made from mild steel.
Let me know what you think about making a homemade stake anvil in the comments below. Did you buy your bickern anvil, or do you plan on forging a bick? How often do you use your bick horn? Do you think a bickern anvil is a handy hardy tool? Do you think a small anvil would be more useful? Do you use other types of hardy anvil in your shop? What hardy tools for anvil do you have? Do you like forging hardy tools? Have you tried selling hardy hole tools before? Let me know what you think in the comments below!

Great tutorial! Bickerns are so useful. I couldn’t find big enough stock so I used a hitch pin that I found at Tractor Supply Co. worked great.

Good idea using the cut off piece for the wedge. No sense in throwing that in the scrap pile. Just finished building my forge, only new piece on it is the refractory I lined it with.

Roy, I like this Bick you made here. It is a simpler looking Bick than most of them that I have seen. Most of them go right over the anvil but yours goes off to the side. I think that there would be some advantages to a Bick like that. As always many thanks for a very informative video!

I am a woodworker by hobby, but have seriously been thinking about doing some custom tools/ lathe gouges. Ironically I already have a 200# anvil in almost new shape, and plenty of heavy hammers, but never used them. I'm having trouble trying to justify all the set-up with a forge and mounting the anvil just for a few tools, I really don't want to get into knife/sword making.

Have you tried a wooden mallet for smoothing? Hammering it nice and hot like always. The wooden mallet doesn't move the metal much, but it really helps to smooth out hammer indentations. Just a thought, I know you use a rawhide for some things. Have a blessed day

+grayem pepper don't have a problem explaining at all. this bick can be used for anything small like forging the openings of bottle openers to sockets or Bodkin arrow heads. Or like I will be showing in another video truing up the cup on a calla lily. Essentially use like a normal Horn of an anvil just smaller for lightweight work. Thanks for the great question

Just make sure you remove it immediately following use......to avoid any unfortunate issues, as anyone who has ever walked into the horn can attest to. This nice, sharp bick would enter your leg like a hot knife into butter.
