Two points. First, people who believe in a hyper-spiritual world are setup to believe in these sorts of stories though none are immune. Second, there is little success to be found in trying to nurse these people back to commmon sense. What really needs to happen is to cut off the offending hand and make clear that this is not christianity before it is too late. Maybe 1/2 the people in evangelical churches bellieve this garbage but at some point, you need to let the church split to get back what you had.
