I love Morbid Angel and Death Metal on the whole but I get why this would be boring to the uninitiated. It isn't fast and flashy. It is technical but in a very slow, sludgy way and the song doesn't really go anywhere. The riffs aren't that interesting to go on that long. The song just trudges on longer than it needs to be. I still like it but certainly not one of their most interesting ones, especially to a noob.

God of Emptiness is divided into two parts. The Accuser and The Tempter. From what I've read of the song years ago, it is about the false teachings of Christianity and not about denouncing the religion. As an atheist, I personally do not believe in any deities but do enjoy learning about them as I believe in simple knowledge. That being said, I do respect others' beliefs. Good review and I encourage the channel to explore further into the realm of death metal.

They are one of the earliest DEATHMETAL bands. They are considered one of the pioneer bands of the genre. The musicianship is insanely good, you just need to really sit down and listen to everything that they are doing. The drums are ridiculously good and Trey is an amazing guitarist. Trey's "sliding tempo" which is part of his signature style, adds a mocking vibe to the sound. It mocks traditional music. And I suppose they also mean to mock God as well (which we know God is not mocked). The best part though is that the drummer, Pete Sandoval is now a born again Christian and that is the reason he parted ways with the band.

I'd give Morbid Angel another try in the future. For the more fast-paced more typical kind of death metal stuff from them then try a song like "Rapture" or "Chapel of Ghouls". I for one love these more doom-laden songs but I know the slow pace isn't everyone's cup of tea
@TaureanMixing

Morbid Angel is a feel; a sentience beyond "normal activity and reactivity." It's not just "play these notes," it's feel this, think that, and finally transcend its mundanity. Case in point: many attempt to play Morbid Angel music and while it sounds like it, it may not have that "it" factor that makes Morbid Angel what it is. Morbid Angel was beyond common thinking for me growing up with death metal. They were a spiritual experience. To question the aesthetic is one thing, we all like what we like, but to question the musicianship? That is beyond insane.
@TaureanMixing
@TaureanMixing Жыл бұрын
"Emptiness" is alluding to pan theology here, in a sense: one must look at this subtlety as an intellectual defiance by injecting conceptual Buddhism. When they speak of emptiness they speak of detaching from preconceived notions. The primal sense here is that in essence organized religion and Christianity is preconceived notion. Surrounding the chatter of man's ideas, including religion and gods, there is the great nothing; emptiness. The thinking here à la Morbid Angel is "be empty like me, lose the preconceived notions and you shall be free." In fact, in the original inlay from the 90s, after the lyrics "In Emptiness" in parentheses it followed the word "free." Vin's take on the interlude verse being God is valid because the parable of emptiness is that one can take up any form one likes by virtue of that said freedom. In a way, again, it is a subtle irreverence; it is an intellectual transfixing that perhaps God and Devil are one entity and as an ultimate being of emptiness, can take up form in either direction. The superficial display of being an Accuser and Tempter is precisely the detaching and in turn spectacle of the human's perception of the world: a fake duality. In the end, there is nothing but freedom when one reconciles with the contrived dualities. Their music was not the only heavy thing.

Interesting choice for a reaction video. I love this song a lot not because of the lyrics but the musicianship. It's interesting to hear your opinion, you find it boring you said. It's interesting to see how the same feeling the music creates is boring for some people while it's completely catchy and even mesmerizing for others. This kind of song (musically) was so unique at the time of it's release. But that's how taste for music works isn't it. Concering the lyrics it's fascinating how you work through them. Thumbs up for this. I never made the effort to interprete the lyrics because I never gave to much on them. At the time of the release of the album "Covenent" (from which "God of Emptiness" is from) the Death Metal Scene was like "hey you! I'm more evil than you! I write the more evil lyrics!" and so on. Since David Vincent (Frontman and lyricist) is not what I would call an intelligent person (waiting for the shitstorm :D ) I think the lyrics can be seen as an attempt to be as evil as you can get without any sense. So that this does not come wrong: I like this video and I very enjoyed listening to your discussion about the song. Keep up the good work!

Wow you guys took a chance on one the heaviest songs in the good DM days.... heavy and heavy lyrics.... its not for everyone but this album came out when i was in 8th grade and low n behold in 94' Black Sabbath, Motorhead and Morbid came to the State Palace Theater in New Orleans.... myself and 6 other 15yr olds thought we saw God... deff an awsome show. Fun fact for you guys: Thi album was produced by Fleming Rasmussen, who also produced "Ride The Lightning", "Master Of Puppets" and "...And Justice For All" for Metallica. Anyway, if you guys could react to any of these, it'd be fantastic: "Steh Auf" by Lindemann, "Empires (Pt. II)" by Kittie or "You're Fucked" by Big Dumb Face.

Oh finally lol! This was mentioned since the first Tool days... And now, years into the Sorvinite dynasty, the song has arrived. Cheers to you mates. Although I would say that "Invocation of the Continual One" is my favorite Morbid Angel song, from my favorite era (Steve's days), and probably their most underrated work.Nonetheless, I still think that God of Emptiness can be seen as essential, due to it's huge popularity and role in the band's history. But yeah, this song is very different than their usual style, both in the early and later days.They love to combine chaotic sounding riffs along with some extreme speed (At least in some songs). They are old school death metal, one of the first and most important bands of the entire genre. To me, it's all Trey and Pete... This is where the magic lays. Overall, I think that Sori will love other classics from them much more. The ones that really defies their sound, which are very fast, fulls with insane riffs, blast beats etc.

David Vincent's advanced theology totally went over their heads!!! 😂 Not to mention the *extreme* power of this song, especially when paired with the instrumental intro "Nar Mattaru". The dude often has some great insights, but he didn't understand this one. It's beyond his comprehension.

@@VinAndSori OK… what makes this particular MORBID ANGEL album so classic and powerful, is the extreme amount of focused Satanic energy and intention that the three members were able to conjure. 1993's 'Covenant' must be taken in wholly. Drummer Pete Sandoval is one of the innovators of fast double-bass and blast-beat drumming, just not on this song, which is one of the band's most relaxed and slowest. Guitarist Trey Azagthoth stripped down his riffing style into something dark and monolithic, with solos that sound like demons screaming into the ears of the listener from another dimension. Vocalist/Bassist/Lyricist David Vincent utilized Christian concepts as song titles ("Rapture", "The Lion's Den", "Vengeance Is Mine", etc.) and then in true Satanic fashion, twisted each concept into something self-serving, away from the will of God. In the liner notes, he thanks Nietzsche, De Sade, Caesar Caligula and other "truth-seekers", so his mindset at the time was one of cold, calculating, Anti-Christian philosophy, even using the unprinted word "untermensch" in the lyrics for "World Of Shit (The Promised Land)", in reference to those unworthy to inherit the Earth. Regarding the lyrics, let's break them down. "Lies… And you fill their souls With all oppressions of this world And all the glory you receive? So what makes you supreme?" Clear enough. David Vincent is accusing God of being the Great Oppressor, requiring worship from the same humanity that he sadistically torments. "Lies… And your crown is falling I offer fantasy, and you Creator Are blind with envy" As humanity's belief in him wanes, God's crown falls. Satan/Lucifer offers "fantasy" as an escape from the suffering of cruel reality, which again, God is directly responsible for. "Let the children come to me Their mother loves me, so shall they Woman bleeding ate my gifts Man was close behind" Who are the children? Humanity itself, as their figurative mother Eve is referenced, who loves Satan/Lucifer. She's bleeding, which is a reference to her female menstruation, and/or to the aftermath of being violated and thus impregnated by Satan/Lucifer, the father of Cain in some doctrines. Adam, intrigued by what he doesn't yet know, also partakes of Satan's/Lucifer's divine gifts. "Just like a snake I'm slithering Through my world divine And like a cat I'm stalking I'll take your soul and you'll be like me In emptiness" The snake is clearly the Serpent in the Tree Of Knowledge Of Good & Evil. As for the cat, I'd say that's a reference to 1 Peter 5:8… "Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour." The full lyrics in the booklet say: "In emptiness, free"… it's clearly not God speaking, but Satan/Lucifer, offering liberation from the confines of God's morality via "fantasy" and "emptiness", granting the space for unlimited potential. According to David Vincent, Satan/Lucifer isn't bound to anything, hence his vast emptiness and ultimate freedom, which David sees as preferable to being filled with the Holy Spirit. Everything about 'Covenant' is an inversion of Biblical concepts, done in a way to undermine its theology in favor of Self-Worship to further the coming of the Übermensch. Within the Death Metal genre, it's a work of High Art, and for many the band's greatest album.
