Hey :) I’m Christian Schaffer, and I’ve lived on the road full-time since May 2018. This journey began in 2013 when I left the corporate world to build my career as an outdoor adventure & travel photographer. As a semi-minimalist, I eventually decided to donate/sell most of my belongings and move into my 4x4 Nissan Xterra. After 14 months of SUV living and falling madly in love with the open road - I bought a van and hired a team to build it out. Van life enables me to experience and document the beauty of our natural world on a whole new level, all while having my home and office nearby. My hope is that by sharing my own personal highs and lows along this (sometimes) wild journey, you might be inspired to hit the road or spend more time outdoors. Maybe one day I'll see you out on that open road 🚐
*My van is a 2019 Ram ProMaster 1500 High Roof, 136" WB with 40K miles*

You have the most beautiful photography of all the bloggers I watch. I’d be emotional, too, and have been when I lost my grandpa, both grandmas and now both my parents. I’m now 62 and a grandma myself, but the older you get, more loved ones and friends pass away and it’s the hardest part of growing older.

I'm 63 and lost my dad two years ago April 26, 2020 at the age of 91. My mother is still alive and just celebrated her 91st birthday and I am living in her house, not mine, and her memory is going. It's hard to watch a person slowly mentally degrade. The photography in this video is why I love the canyonlands of the west. Absolutely the most beautiful. I am a model train buff which is why van life would never work for me. I am trying to build a model railroad which incudes scenes like Ruby Canyon in western Colorado.

The only good thing about getting old is Grandchildren. I said this to our Chaplain at our walking football at Liverpool in the community and Bill is his name a very inspirational man, as he walked off injured I enquired are you ok Bill, his reply yes just a old injury and I said, Bill the only good thing about getting old is grandchildren and his reply was, I have five grandsons and if I had known how good it was being a grandparent, I would have had them first.

Please don’t try and make a less dramatic video! This is real. I live on the road and I cry all the time for reasons ranging from the beauty of rainbows to dead people to feelings of loneliness. It would be unbelievable if all of your videos would just be happy and fluffy. Knowing you and others are out there makes me feel less alone and always reminds me of why I’m here too, so thank you Christian for sharing so vulnerably ❤️

This was an incredibly moving piece. You have all of it dialed in! The shots, soundtrack, ambient soundscapes, narration of both text and spoken word, and also including all the minor details of the journey really transported me to the place you were at, both physically and emotionally, even through my tiny phone screen. Thanks for leaving in all the nuances of van life, especially the crowds and in town chores. It makes a huge difference in highlighting the reality of it all.

Christian, I have no idea where to start after watching this video. One thing I know for sure is I could travel the same paths as you and probably only see 1/10th of the beauty you provide us in your videos. Thank you for providing your view of this world we live in. We would all miss so much without your presentation. As for the emotional part of the video if there was a way I could hug you to make you feel even the least bit better, believe me I would do it in a heartbeat. One last thing, the video of you in front of the rocks and just smiling was the most beautiful visions I have seen in a while!

Thank u for this gorgeous video. I love that whole Moab area too. And thank u for the emotion, I found it deeply touching as I lost my mom 2 yrs ago and it still feels like yesterday. I understand where you're coming from. ❤

I'm preparing to start my journey of life living on the road soon, which I've never done before. I'm doing it for myself and my grandpa, who was really my only family, I lost him a couple of years ago and it's because of him that I was able to travel the country growing up. It's also because of those experiences of why I want to do this, and it's also because of him that I'll be able to do this. I'll be thinking of him the entire time. This made me tear up because it feels like another sign from him, among the many I've had, that this is the right thing to do.

Your grandfather is proud of the beautiful human you are. I was deeply touched by your emotion, your special feelings to places, the tribute in the end of the video. . I felt my grandfather who raised me had passed while traveling & being at Red Rocks Canyon, NV. Hugs from ocean and land apart.

The generator part made me laugh. I grew up on RV/Van holidays and there is a story of when my older sister was around 3 or 4 and my parents had found a very nice and quiet spot for the night and then were joined by a huge ship of an RV that had a super loud generator running. They parked super close even though there was so much space. Sadly for them my father knows his electronics and told my sister - who fit in the crawl space - which plug to take out for the generator to stop running. Sometimes I appreciate my fathers shamelsessness 😂 Thank you for your content and the honesty - I really appreciate all your videos no matter how (rightfully) dramatic they might be.

So much to love about this vid. I loved the desert scenes and the sincerity you showed. I have to point out the pic you shared of your grandpa. I'm in my 50's so not old. But not young. I loved that you shared a moment when he was young and out there challenging the world. My sincere condolences.
