This year we are celebrating the Christmas season by reading the amazing advent sermons of the german mystic philosopher Meister Eckhart. There are three more sermons coming after this one.

“When I was the stream, when I was the forest, when I was still the field when I was every hoof, foot, fin and wing, when I was the sky itself, no one ever asked me did I have a purpose, no one ever wondered was there anything I might need, for there was nothing I could not love. It was when I left all we once were that the agony began, the fear and questions came, and I wept, I wept. And tears I had never known before. So I returned to the river, I returned to the mountains. I asked for their hand in marriage again, I begged-I begged to wed every object and creature, and when they accepted, God was ever present in my arms. And He did not say, “Where have you been?” For then I knew my soul-every soul- has always held Him.” -Meister Eckhart

Does anyone happen to know the source of this poem? It looks like the source is a translation in a book by Daniel Ladinsky, but there's no evidence Eckhart ever wrote poems, and I can't find any original German text for this... I hope that this is not some sort of "pastiche" of Eckhart quotes collected together in the form of a poem.

@@SPscorevideos this specific poem is called “When I was the forest” when you look it up you’ll see at least three websites right away that say Echkart wrote it, every reference to this poem I’ve seen whether in a video or just the text on a website says it’s by Echkart but I did find one that said these poems are not specifically written by him but poems constructed on his philosophy

@@SPscorevideos I hate to be the bearer of bad news but if this was "translated", as appears evident by a short internet search, by Ladinsky, I would consider it a Ladisnky original, not anything that Eckhart wrote. Ladisnky got himself in some hot water with his claims toward his Rumi translations and I wouldn't imagine he changed his modus operandi for Eckhart.

This morning, I took a walk along the coast of Mälaren and I thought about Meister Eckhart and how cool it would be to hear a Christmas sermon with him. And then this shows up. Indeed, in the ground we are one and same, and time is a necessity of order. Amen Thank you Philip.

I love his emphasis on emptiness and detachment especially which seem somewhat rare in Christianity, and that in our natural state God works perfectly in us. It reminds me in a way of how in Taoism people are most harmonious in their natural state of uncontrived simplicity which naturally generates all positive qualities of a person. If anyone is interested in knowing more of his thoughts on these things his “treatise on detachment” is a great read.
@haa3472
@haa3472 2 ай бұрын
His teachings are Christian teachings. Christianity is precisely what emphasizes emptiness and detachment through compliance with certain commandments, such as: Prohibition of gluttony and little eating, which create an emptiness (sobriety) in the human being so that inner work can take place. It seems like you don't know much about it.

this sings so loudly of anatman, it's beautiful. Including the images as perfect allegory for attachments, giving rise to illusion of separation, and the soul taking sense impressions into itself - creating duality by self nature. So wonderful, thank you Filip

I think that Eckhart is speaking about a certain prayer/meditation technique, in which, by observing your thoughts and observations, and by going inwards, you suddenly enter a strange "zone", where everything melds together, and all is silent. You can also feel yourself growing and it feels like you are becoming melded into your surroundings. You are no longer separate from the outside world. This zone could be the silent middle part of the soul, that Eckhart is talking about. I wonder if, by staying in this zone, something meaningful could happen, or if it's just a cool technique. Does the "word" suddenly appear in this state? It is hard to enter into this "zone" but it can be done.

Thank you Felip, for delving into Meister Eckhart this Advent. The ground of God is the same as that of the soul, from this place of no images, of only silence, comes the secret word, all poetically descriptive. If to “sin” is, from the New Testament, to miss the mark - then in that place of no things (or images) there can be no sin, you are inhabiting what was aimed for.

I really enjoyed this, and have some comments for what i liked and disliked (which dislike is too harsh of a word to use really): I enjoyed your framing a lot, and i enjoyed seeing the text you were reading. I also really enjoyed you stopping at parts and talking, which made it bite-sized and more easy to understand. I disliked the candle moving so much in the text shot, it was a bit distracting. I also wished to know what book you were getting it from, since I'd like to read along or get the book myself. I also would honestly love even more commentary, as i do appreciate your thoughts a lit, and how you can pull from sufi traditions for this. Thank you so much for doing this, and may the ground be soft on your embrace EDIT: I had not noticed until a second watch what book you had used, but you did mention it! It would be helpful however to have it also in the description, if you can.

Gosh how lovely Filip, thank you. My tired brain, i get flooded, overwhelmed. Just as i begin to despair, you remind me how the mystics assert that God/Love cannot be explained or understood. What a comfort, thaat's why i don't understand🤣Seriously though, i reach a station of life where everything reminds me how heart broken i am. The Joy of the season is tempered w/grief. The extreme contrast of emotions is itself a kind of rapture (not Thee Rapture! which also i do not get) And what in the world is ratiocination. Something else to google...💙🕊Oh, your comments provide a little breather, ok w/me

Thank you again, Filip. Meister Eichart's first sermon of Christmas and for the last one you had on your discussion. It does get us to look at beauty. Is there a book on Magarite Parie, the masterpiece, "The Mirror of Simple Souls?" Happy holidays to all, no matter what faith one chooses to belong to. There are no divisions for me. May I ask if you have heard of the philosopher Krishnamurti, who taught for many years, who was formerly with the Theosophical Society created by Annie Besant at the turn of the century He chose to walk away, and he created schools in Ojai California, England, and in India. He passed away in 1986 at the age of 90. He wrote many books and gave many lectures and did not charge any money. "The Awakening of Intelligence" is just one among many. David Bohmn, a well-known physicist, was some of my favorite talks. 🙏❤️🌍🌿🕊🎵🎶

I absolutely loved this video, thank you! I only recently stumbled upon your channel but have been enjoying it immensely. I have a deep abiding love of the mystical traditions. I've been practicing Buddhism for several decades now (first Zen, then later Tibetan Dzogchen) but often find myself returning to Christian mystics such as Eckhart. I'm sure I'm not telling you anything you don't already know, but something that struck me when you spoke of Eckhart's 'Grund" is its resemblance to the use of 'ground' in Tibetan tantra, as in the 'ground of being', or fundament that cannot be cognised because it is empty of itself; it can only be experienced. It is thus ineffable. And it's one of a trinity of elements, the other two being the Path and the Fruit. Anyway, I just wanted to point out that your discussion of 'Grund' brought this up for me. Wonderful discussion, cheers and a luminous holiday season to you!
