The best ways to improve miter saw dust collection for your mitre saw. Why they make so much dust and how to control it! I offer a space saving solution that only costs a few bucks and can be added to most saws and also talk about what makes some of the best saws on the market, like the Festool Kapex so good at collecting dust at the source. #dustcollection #mitersaw #mitresaw #smallshop #garageworkshop

Thank You so much! You not only explained the problem but several different solutions to the problem. While I'm waiting on materials, I tried adding duct tape to the shoot, extending it closer to the blade. No side panels yet, but that alone has cut sawdust almost in half. Also, it's keeping off the floor and on saw.

Hey dude thanks for taking the time to make these dust extraction videos! It’s a great insight. By chance has anyone sent you a picture of using this concept on a dewalt 777 chopsaw? As it’s a slightly different design to these bigger machines. I’m going to order some drawer liner and give it a go.

George, thanks for watching and taking the time to comment. I don't have a photos from a DW777 from anyone, but lots of folks have done similar hoods on others sliders. As I understand, that has 2x ports, I would love to see what you come up with! Best of luck killing that dust, - Chris.

I just did this to my old Ryobi compound miter saw. The lower cone makes a very big difference. I installed the drawer liner inside the metal housing the blade sits in. It does not interfere with the blade and no dust seeps out like it does when mounted on the outside of the metal housing. The outer shroud didn't fit so well with my saw's configuration. The lower cone does such a great job that it doesn't matter. Not sure why they don't come stock with a bigger rubber flange like this. Maybe some do.

I'm glad it's working for you, Dallas! Thanks for watching and for sharing your Royobi mod. I don't know why manufacturers aren't optimizing for dust collection like you said. Best, Chris

This guy has a good idea to take care of the blade cut.... you will see an under blade piece from the throat plate to suck that also.... does this make it better? Dust collection? I think it would.....

This is a really well thought out video. I made your double shroud jig for my 12" Delta miter saw last weekend, and dust collection improved substantially from my previous effort, which was a box behind the blade with dust collection port. One thing you did not comment on, and I have not seen commented on anywhere, is the optimal opening in a homemade miter saw fence. Should it be just blade width? or wider? Thank you for your efforts. here.
@benchtopwoodworks
@benchtopwoodworks 2 жыл бұрын
Mlkery, thank you for you kind compliment. What model of Delta did you modify? I'm starting to work a solution for a new Delta Cruzer I purchased. On opening it really depends on the cuts you are making. Zero clearance will only allow for dedicated angles, but will provide best support for least tear out. I personally have not experimented with homemade fence except for some moulding jigs/fences.

This works well with miters because it pivots with the head of the saw.

D'oh. I *just* bought one of those hoods (works well). The one thing is that the fine particulates seem to be captured as well. But it does take up a lot of room. I'll use the rubber boot and compare. Thanks!

@@benchtopwoodworks Well Hell! I just spent $159 for nothing! LOL. I tried both. The hood "catches" more, but your method works better. When you use the hood, everything falls within the hood. But the problem is that you still have to clean up inside the hood. I don't have a powerful 4" vacuum connected to it. Just a 2 1/2 Fein Turbo with Dust Deputy Cyclone. So when I'm done, I have to tap/suck/clean the hood and behind the saw. With your method, it catches almost everything and I don't have to clean up ANYTHING. IT FREAKING ROCKS! And, of course, I don't have to have a ginormous hood behind the saw. So while the hood is a good option, it's bulky and not as practical as your solution. Thanks for posting.

@@benchtopwoodworks I am in a cabinet shop. Actually a large foot print with lots of space. Which is good. My work station is right next to the miter saw ... Which sucks a bit for dust. Right now our dust control is nothing. They had a shop vac but it died. The filter would clog. This was before my time there. Right now when we are doing a lot of mdf or ply wood cuts we will disconnect one of our large jets and bring it over from the dado saw (we have two sliding table saws and one cabinet saw that is permanent set with dado blades.) So far I'm trying to talk boss into getting a small 200 dollar wen collecter. I've got the ok on building an enclosure... But that doesn't work as well with a shop vac. Our miter saw is on a shop built rolling cart. Right now. I just wanted to say thanks because your better at explaining this subject than I am. Which is gonna help me make my case to boss (who is a really great guy) much better than my standard pitch of "my idea is better and works good... Trust me"

Andrew, I'm not sure if the pattern will work, the material and general concept would. Here's an Amazon Affiliate link to the type of drawer liner I used: amzn.to/3h2ffXa I recommend you buy it locally, it can be had even at some dollar stores in small rolls or any of the box stores.

Track saw dust collection is pretty good why don’t they take the same concept from that and put a cover over the blade and have it plunge into the work piece
@benchtopwoodworks
@benchtopwoodworks Жыл бұрын
Great concept. That's basically the goal with my products/designs. Enclose the blade and get collection right up against the off-shoot of dust.

What happens when the blade cuts through the bottom of the wood. The dust is trapped under the wood and flies backwards. I have a Delta Cruzer. The miter deck is hollow, under the deck plate are 3 large holes . My plan, I'm going to seal off the underside and add another port to suck the dirt out of the area beneath the blade / deck plate. In short, suction can be added directly under the cut line for the whole length of the cut.
@benchtopwoodworks
@benchtopwoodworks 2 жыл бұрын
Might be able to mitigate with zero clearance insert. Definitely a source of dust discharge, although most chips are initially pulled upward and into the airstream of blade. If you can strip the dust out of that path by focusing suction close to top-side exit, I've found, it takes care of almost everything on other saws. Very interested in what you learn. On my last saw, what you've described presented as some of the larger chips I was unable to collect. I found it was a very very small amount and less of a hazard than the main discharge. I'm using a shop vac, and decided the tradeoff of dividing the airflow would not work for my setup.

@@benchtopwoodworks Well if it's any consolation, the dust shroud was missing on my saw. So I followed your lead, grabbed my roll of duct tape and made a new one. The only dust I see now, is the dust from under the board. Sitting right at the miter pivot. Bottom collector and I image there would be zero dust. So thanks for the duct tape idea. Pardon me,,, but shit what a difference that made. By volume I cut what would be equal to a solid piece of 2 x 4, 12 inches long. The dust it missed was about enough to fill a 1/4 cup

I have a double bevel mitre saw and find your solution to the dust cloud the best I have seen. Your videos are not so genius. I understand you included a wire, but there are no instruction where to apply it or how. What determined the size of the cut outs. I was hoping you could remake the video showing step by step instruction from start to finish. Thanks so much for sharing your great idea
@benchtopwoodworks

Sorry, I was actively prototyping and on iteration number ...n? when I finally found a solution I was happy with. I grabbed the camera phone and hit record and didn't realize this would be a video that would take off. II have a few other videos on the subject, most recently: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/mrRgq7WQxNa3eWw.html On the wire: the purpose of the wire is to reinforce the cone and keep it open throughout the movement and under suction. How & where, or even if its required is very saw specific and Please feel free to email me and I might be able to help you develop a tailored solution for your saw. On video/ communication: I appreciate the feedback. Each video is a learning lesson and I'm sure you can appreciate the amount of learning and feedback I've received over the past 6 years of producing limited videos by myself. I try to make each video better than the last. I will be completing a similar mod on the Delta Cruzer on the next few months and will likely document and share that process more the style you described.
