In my quest to improve the pitiful dust collection ability of my mitre saw, I explain the things I tried and the solution I ended up with, for now at least!
This hack is easy, fast, and cheap. Try it, let me know how it goes for you…

Thank you, You’re a true gent for saying so! 🤝 I do think that make for a more valuable video than simply showing the solution alone without any context, but you can’t please everyone at once. Check out my new dovetail jig video; so simple it’s crazy no one seems to have thought of it before! 🤷🏻‍♂️

I don't know how to thank you enough for this genius solution! I just took the duct tape and in less than 5 minutes did this amazing modification to my Evolution miter saw. Man it makes so much difference! Like over 90% of saw dust is getting perfectly collected by my vac. No tools needed, just a few pieces of duct tape. Simple and extremely effective. Thank you so much!!!

Thanks man, I try not to ramble on too much (!) but wanted to get across the process of analysing the problem, and the journey through the needlessly complex solutions that end up leading you to the most simple thing you could ever think of! So often, simplicity is the key and this problem was no exception!

I was going to try this but had no idea how much 50p was, so I almost gave up on it. Seriously though, I thought of doing the same thing, as most of the collector videos only work for 90° cuts, and they appear overly complicated for the task at hand. I was also thinking of adding a semi-flexible curtain to either side of the blade guard to really channel the airflow into the funnel. I'll post back on how it works when I try that add-on. Thanks for reminding us that simpler can be better. Cheers from the US!

Brilliant idea! This might have additional options if inside of the tape one attached a layer of thin aluminum flashing. This flashing would be bendable and allow the shroud to maintain a shape. A thin layer of plastic or card stock may have a similar result, but the aluminum would hold a shape whereas those other materials wouldn't do that nearly as well. Thanks for sharing your design!

Hi - Nice idea 👍🏼. I tried some card and plastic pieces of a bottle to start with, and abandoned them for tape alone. Thin metal could work really well to keep the shape, just be mega careful you don’t catch it with the blade in case it comes loose and goes flying! 😱

Quite randomly I did the same thing when we were on a site last year, I then took the idea and tried rolling out a rubber or polythene version but they didnt work as well as the duct tape version, i think because you can manipulate the duct tape to hold a shape a little better. In prolonged use Ive knicked the duct table a little bit, it doesnt get caught in the blade, I find a careful technique helps and slowing cutting slightly improves effectiveness. I wish I could mount it a little better to my makita but as it comes off its a case of wiping the dust off and reduct taping it. Its by far the best improvement and everyone should do it... Great Video!
@dovetailsnotnails8090
@dovetailsnotnails8090 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Jamie, sounds like your experience is very similar, except I started with the rubber/plastic bits and then abandoned them for the tape on its own, finding it better exactly as you did. It’s not perfect and as you say the tape can nick, especially on thicker cuts, but go slow and it definitely better than spraying dust everywhere. FYI I also tried encasing the left side of the blade, having noticed that you get more dust spray to the left of the machine than the right. It did help a bit with spray to the left, but it also made more come out towards the front of the machine where you stand. So I abandoned that one too. Thanks again for commenting. 👍🏼

This was very timely for me as I'm setting up my mitre saw and have been disappointed at how much dust is still generated even with a dust collector. I plan on fabricating something like what you've done but using 1/16" polyurethane which will have a similar flexibility but a bit more firmness (and I have some already). Thanks for a great idea.

This is why most contractors carry their saws to the job site and set them up outside on a patio or the ground. A cheap, large fan behind the operator will blow the dust away from the face.

@joek511

The blade opening beneath the wood is a big part of the problem. When the blade cuts through,,,,,, the dust shoots under the wood and comes out behind the rails But the vaccum is out past the rails. That's something I intend to do, rigging dust collection inside the blade track
@dovetailsnotnails8090
@dovetailsnotnails8090 2 жыл бұрын
I’ve not found that to be a problem so far, but will keep and eye on it. Thanks. 👍🏼. You might do just as well with a zero clearance insert to prevent dust going underneath the blade throat plate.
@joek511
@joek511 2 жыл бұрын
@@dovetailsnotnails8090 Even a zero clearance will not stop dust from flying out beneath the bottom of the wood. Example, my table saw. With my dust collection on and the zero clearance installed I actually get more dust on the top of the table saw. The idea is the same as adding extra dust collection to the top of your table saw. It's just inverted

how did you attach the tape to the stock vac tube. I have a Sheppach slidimg mitre. It is held on by two small screws but little else and there is nowhere to put the duct tape too. I have tried making mock ups using cardboard but had very little success. ANy advice would be really apreciated.

Not before you plunge the blade down. You can still see it till the blade is about half way down, by then, you don’t really need to see it! Likely depends on the make of the saw though. For this evo one, it’s fine. 👍🏻

@dovetailsnotnails8090
@dovetailsnotnails8090 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Dave, thanks for commenting. The laser line is still fully visible with the mod in place. The line only gets obscured once you’ve started to lower the blade to make the cut. So since you only require the laser when lining up, this has not been an issue…on this model at least. If it’s an problem on your saw, you can easily bend and fold the tape up and out of the way to line up, then bend it back again to make the cut. 👍🏼
