Alkaptonuria (black urine disease) is a rare inherited genetic disorder associated with a defective gene on chromosome 3. Sufferers' bodies have difficulty breaking down protein, causing discoloration of their urine and eventually leading to joint damage and mobility issues.
In this video we visit the National AKU centre at the Royal Liverpool University Hospital where research is being carried out to help understand and develop new treatments for this disease.
