We’re back after a long summer with a fabulous 1950’s Juvenia chronograph with the legendary Venus 175 movement inside it. Join us for fixing a few issues with the watch and discussing the pros and cons of column wheel chronographs versus cam-shifted ones. We’ll also look at using a cool product called Magic Rhodium, and while it’s neither magic nor rhodium, it does work pretty well.
As always we’ll take a few mental detours including a discussion of literary classics and their impact on the trade of watchmaking!

This is an old flick but still I found it rewarding enough to leave a thank you comment. I usually just turn for manual labor, be it cooking, melting, watch repair, whatever involves the hands and brains to function at once. A plus for you is the lack of accompanying music, even if it was AC DC I still think music sux, retracts from the learning. Yet another plus is your commentary, witty and not dry. Can’t believe am saying this but I also dig brown cheese. As for cracks and butts well that’s universal.

A SUPERB video, both entertaining and educational. Your video editing skills are rapidly approaching the same high level of professionalism as your watchmaking skills. I particularly appreciate how carefully and effectively you edited the disassembly process at the beginning - you showed everything a viewer would want to see in a very efficient and tightly-paced manner that is very respectful of the viewer's time. Your camera work is also first-class - always correctly focused, with great use of close-up shots from time to time. Thank you also for elaborating the use of epilame... fascinating to know that it needs to be removed from the shaft of the parts prior to reassembly.

Glad to see you back, I was beginning to worry about you! And thanks for a great video. I think I learned more about chronographs in this piece then anything I've seen before. I can only wonder at how someone would make a "homemade spring" for a watch (seems like the heat treat would be tricky), but then I'm still trying to figure out how they thread screws that small! Hope you can get ahold of the Seagull equivalent of the Venus chrono and compare them. Those Chinese watches seem like a real bargain . Stay well.
@VintageWatchServices
@VintageWatchServices 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks Randy, that's very nice to hear :) It might be a long time ago that the previous watchmaker did that, as no one would do so nowadays. I've seen those Seagulls and they honestly look great. Seem to be great value for the money also. Btw, screws smaller than 1mm are made with rolling dies (if you want to make them yourself on a lathe). They're too small to cut 😉

Citizen had a rather elegant solution to the expense of the column wheel switcher: around the end of the 1960s they patented a switcher which uses a pair of one-way toothed wheels riveted together with an offset which allows them to perform the same function as a column wheel. Frederique Constant, which is owned by Citizen, recently introduced a new chronograph movement which even further refines this solution by making the wheels star shaped. This allows the switching to be just as smooth as a traditional column wheel but allows the use of much simpler machined or stamped parts rather than an expensive to make single-piece precision part with complex features.

@Leptospirosi
@Leptospirosi 2 жыл бұрын
Well the ST19 was built in china with the same machines and drawings that Venus has used to make this movement, when, in 1961 Venus sold all their old equipments. Some minor changes have been made as technology went forward and because I think China has the most extensive experience in service this movement as the watches were issued for military serviceing, but the movement is technically the same thing, not just reverse engineered movements like the ETA clones: ST19 is technically a very young sibling of the original.

Thanks for another thoroughly enjoyable, entertaining and educational video! In general, how do you decide when balance staff pivots need to be polished? Thanks again!!
@VintageWatchServices
@VintageWatchServices 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Woody, thanks so much! It really depends on what you mean by "polished". Actually polishing the pivots with a Jacot tool or the like is something you really only do if the pivots are damaged, and you might even have to replace the jewels afterwards with smaller ones given that the diameter of the pivots has changed. So that's a relatively drastic step. Using pithwood, Eveflex sticks or similar things do not actually polish the pivots though I might sort of unintentionally use the word polish, they basically clean off surface dirt and oxydation. The balance staff pivots are much better protected than the rest of the wheel pivots, given that they are more or less operating in a closed off area due to the cap jewels and the oil. Thus if the watch is in overall good condition it shouldn't be necessary to treat these pivots apart from normal cleaning. If the watch is dirty and full of gunk you should inspect the balance staff pivots under strong magnification and if they aren't perfectly shaped and shiny, you need to clean them more thoroughly. If they are deformed, for instance mushroomed, you would have to bring out your Jacot tool. Hope that helps!

Love your videos. I always wonder how do you remember which screws go where, some pretty obvious but some so not. Thanks again!
@VintageWatchServices
@VintageWatchServices 2 жыл бұрын
Hello John, thanks for that! There are some commonalities about the screw types that you pick up after a while, making it relatively easy to see which screws are for the bridges, which are for the pallet fork, which are for the keyless works etc. It is however a challenge especially with chronographs where you can have a loooot of screws. For chronographs I have a few special storage trays with 10 compartments, so I can basically put the screws in with the part they belong to. That makes it easier :)

@@johnvaluk1401 The screws aren't functional parts so unless they are visibly dirty or rusty I won't clean them. If they need to be cleaned I put them is a few separate small baskets to ensure I can still keep track of them. And taking lots of pictures will also help 😉

I have been watching your work with great interest. Thank you for encouraging the questions. I have this Omega Constellation 562 from late 60s early 70s (serial starts with 29). I have taken it to two local watch service centers and I’ve asked them to regulate it properly, but all they did was to push the regulators to the limit and give it back to me. Although those regulator adjustments, both the hair spring and the A/R screw, the watch is running ~20sec/day slow. Do you have any advice for this?

The watch was working fine before, just gaining a few seconds a day. I am suspecting they have used the wrong lubricant for this watch, do you share the same opinion?
@VintageWatchServices
@VintageWatchServices 2 жыл бұрын
If the watch was working fine before there shouldn't be any severe issues with it, and using wrong lubricants also shouldn't make that much of a difference unless they went completely nuts in what and where they used it. I'm a bit confused though, you said they pushed the regulator all the way to make it run faster and it still runs too slow, that sounds much more serious and could indicate a hairspring issue but if it ran well before that also sounds improbable.

Hi! I am very new to this hobby of watch repair/jewelry repair. I was wondering where I can get the kit that is used to determine the watch band size. Or should I just get some digital calipers and measure them that way?
@VintageWatchServices
@VintageWatchServices 2 жыл бұрын
Hello Nate, welcome to a wonderful hobby! You can indeed simply use calipers, but when you buy a watch it should also say the lug size. Most vintage watches at around 34-35mm size will have 18mm lugs, the 36-38 typically 19mm and smaller ones typically 16, sometimes 17. There are also some handy gauges you can buy.

I wouldn't be surprised if PolyWatch contains cerium oxide 😁 There's supposedly also some plastic polymer in it that fills the scratches but I'm not sure if that's really the case. Cerium oxide should work well on plastic crystals but also works on mineral glass, which regular PolyWatch doesn't. There is a separate PolyWatch product for mineral glass which might also contain cerium oxide 😂

If the barrel was scored how do you repair it? Could you use the magic rhodium or is there another technique?
@VintageWatchServices
@VintageWatchServices 2 жыл бұрын
Hello Ashley, if the barrel is scored you would need to remove the scores first. The easiest way to do that would be to fix the barrel in a lathe and gently sand off the surface until it is smooth. It is very rare that a barrel is deeply scored, so it should not be necessary to change the height of the mainspring. Then after you have smoothened out the surface you could apply magic rhodium if you prefer, but that would pretty much be purely cosmetical.

@VintageWatchServices

They sure did! Many would say they made better watches back then, with much more focus on quality and durability. These watches will last for a hundred years while most watches today even made by reputable brands will not last more than 5 years before they need to replace half the parts... Corporate profit requirements have completely overtaken making the best product they can.

Greetings from the USA, sir! I've taken on watchmaking as hobby over the past year and am a huge fan of your channel. I have a question that hopefully you can shed some light on. I've recently won a bid for a mid-1940's chronograph that I'm certain is using Venus 170 movement with the unique 12:00 and 6:00 sub-dials. The dial face is labeled "Estrella" but I can find no record of this watch company anywhere. Curiously, the dial face looks identical to a similar "Breitling" model of the same vintage (same styling, fonts, colors, scales, etc.) with only the name changed to Estrella. The movement bridge itself has no branding. Was "Estrella" connected to Brietling in some way? Is there a source I can reference? I'll be happy to send a couple of photos your way if that would help. Thanks in advance. I trust your encyclopedic knowledge on these things!
@VintageWatchServices
@VintageWatchServices 11 ай бұрын
Thanks for watching! I don't know about that brand, but the dials of these types of watches would often be quite similar due to the location of the subdials. Thus most likely it's just one of the many brands that existed back in the day.

Couldn't the dial be lacquered to avoid it shedding off material that will end up inside the movement?
@VintageWatchServices
@VintageWatchServices 2 жыл бұрын
Hello Mohamed, thanks for watching and for your question! I would be very cautious with adding varnish to a dial like this, as you would likely end up destroying it. When they add varnish during production they are able to apply it in a very thin and even layer, and doing so without the right equipment is more likely to produce disaster than improvement... The danger of the dial shedding any material is very small, there are no loose fragments on it. When I talked about it being like butterfly wings it was more the feel of it, not that there's actual dust on it :)

How about a smattering of Nynorsk or Bokmål watch terms. How many languages is the junior watch maker learning?

@VintageWatchServices 2 жыл бұрын
Haha, indeed! The junior currently speaks four-ish languages; English, French, Dutch and some Chinese and he's about to start learning German this school year. Just incredible how much these little brains can absorb... I spoke Norwegian to him when he was a child but decided to stop it when he was close to 3 years old as he was then in a situation where he had to start learning Dutch on top of the English and Chinese he was already learning. I thought it would be too much with four languages at that age and think that was the right decision. Still a bit sad, but pragmatically speaking, Norwegian is quite useless anyway 😁
