Chuck Berry: The Father of Rock and Roll

When the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame opened in 1986, Chuck Berry was the first inductee. That’s all that needs to be said, really, but we have some more if you want. There are, of course, the standard accolades: one of the best guitarists of all time, one of the best musicians of all time, one of the founders of rock & roll etc. etc. But Chuck Berry can boast one unique honor that no other rocker can - his rock music will be the only one heard by aliens.
Back in 1977, when NASA launched the Voyager 1 and 2 space probes into deep space, they included two copies of a golden record that contained a collection of sights and sounds of life on Earth. Therefore, if thousands, even millions of years from now, an intelligent alien species would find the probes, the golden record would act as a sort of time capsule. Among other things, the record includes a diverse 90-minute selection of music, carefully picked by a committee led by Carl Sagan to showcase the best that human culture had to offer. Only one rock & roll song made the cut - Chuck Berry’s iconic “Johnny B. Goode.”

I was fortunate enough to see Chuck Berry in concert at Magic Mountain in Sanat Clarita (at that time, Valencia), California. It was so much fun seeing this man, who in my mind is the personification of rock'n'roll, performing live. When I hear the words "rock'n'roll," it is Chuck Berry who is the first person who comes to my mind.

My favorite story ive ever heard about Chuck Berry was at one particular show he arrived without a band and asked the house or opening band to back him. When one of the band members asked him what songs they'd be playing Berry responded "c'mon man im Chuck Berry, were gonna play Chuck Berry songs" 😅

My first album was probably "Sergeant Pepper". As a child, I was looking at the cover for hours, asking my parents about all the people featured on the cover. After a while, the record was totally scratched (I was about 3-4 years old), so my parents had to buy a new one and I got the scratched one to look at as long as I wanted to.

This Aussie met Chuck Berry when I was 16 (1979); he'd just stormed off stage & ended the show after twice politely asking the audience to stop throwing flowers etc on stage while he was playing. (As almost ALL musicians do.) He was in a rage vowing never to return to my home town. (Cairns.) But when I hesitantly asked him for his autograph, he became the epitome of grace & good manners and kindly gave it with a "thank you son". Age 20 (1983) & in Army uniform I bumped into him at Melbourne Airport. I asked him again for his autograph (as I'd lost the 1st one) and we had a lovely chat in the minute or so. (Although he didn't serve, he respected the Armed Services; Hence "Too Much Monkey Business" - can relate to that one!) I still have that autograph! (Can scan & send; he also included a "happy smile".) He was a gentleman to me & I think you underestimate his genius & influence. (Almost every guitarist since ... Beatles, Stones, AC/DC, Clapton ... etc etc.) Nobody is perfect.

Chuck was notoriously difficulties to work with. He didn't tour witha band of his own. He required the venue to hire local musicians to support him at a gig where he would be booked. And he would require the band assembled for a particular gig to not only know his songs without having rehearsed with any of them, but to also know what song he was going to play once he started playing. Nevertheless, everyone wanted to play with him. The most important guitarists of rock history began due to his influence. George Harrison and Keith Richards among others have claimed Chuck as the reason they started playing, to the point that we have no idea whether either of them would have ever picked up a guitar at all, without him. That influence alone makes him the most indispensable guitarist in rock history.

I think the first album I ever bought with my own money was “…And In This Corner” by DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince. So yeah. I’m a child of the 80s. Also I dig the John Cena “Never Give Up” sign in the background.

I wasn't going to share mine because it's a tad bit embarrassing but with all the haters jn the comments I want to make Biographics team snort smile at my comment. When I was 6 years old I asked my Aunt to take me to buy Michael Jackson's album Dangerous. I played that tape over and over again for years. A couple of years later I once again asked my Aunt to take me to buy an album. This time it was The Prodigy's Fat of the Land. Which also got many good years of use. My poor aunt was left wondering what happened to her adorable niece singing "Heal the World" and when was she replaced with a tween screaming "I'm a fire starter a twisted fire starter" 😂😂😂 Karl you're wonderful. Never change and please don't ever leave us 💙💙💙

There is an amusing story that Keith Morris of the Circle Jerks & Off! told once about how Chuck Berry came to one of his shows & asked to play with him. Keith of course said yes, but when it came time to play the band was not sure what song Berry had wanted to play, because Keith did not believe in sound checks. They only figured it out when Chuck berry went into the Chores & started singing "Roll Over Beethoven".

David Bowie pronounced the first syllable of his surname (Bow) as you would a bow tie not as an action of bending the middle of the body and not to be confused with boo as in the knife - although this is where he got the idea from 💜

Ahg . my first gift of rock and roll was April Wine album. Can't remember the name ovvit. First one that I remember buying wuz either ABBA's greatest hits or Heart's Dreambout Annie. Was once a wannabe member of the Kiss Amy. I'm older now but it's part of my history .. i make no apologies.

Chuck Berry was furious with the Beach Boys for stealing the riff from one of his songs, for one of theirs. He never forgave them. He was friends with the Rolling Stones Keith Richards.

I think my first album (it's been around 40 years) was a kind of greatest hits from Spike Jones and the City Slickers. Music because of my parents. Spike Jones was more their era, but still awesome today, IMO. Might make an interesting video about him...
