Google George Welch; He was first by 2 weeks in an F86 Sabre. NASA was embarrassed that North American Aviation had beaten them in an actual production aircraft and not a test plane that they refused to acknowledge Georges flight even though it was carried out on the same test site and the same recording equipment ( owned by NASA ). Hate when politics gets in the way of truth. NASA poured bucket loads on tax payers money into the project so it would not have looked good to upstaged by a rival company..

Godspeed General Yeager. Our nation mourns your passing but rests knowing that you're now flying higher than ever before. 🇺🇸 ""Oh, I have slipped the surly bonds of earth, And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings; Sunward I've climbed and joined the tumbling mirth of sun-split clouds - and done a hundred things You have not dreamed of - wheeled and soared and swung high in the sunlit silence. Hovering there I've chased the shouting wind along and flung my eager craft through footless halls of air. "Up, up the long delirious burning blue I've topped the wind-swept heights with easy grace, where never lark, or even eagle, flew; and, while with silent, lifting mind I've trod the high untrespassed sanctity of space, put out my hand and touched the face of God"

It hasn't changed actually, what you hear in old recordings is called the transatlantic accent, it is a learnt pronunciation of words. it was thought to help make old, rudimentary recordings more easily understood, and combat distortion in old recording equipment.
