Gary was a quietly confident player. Made him a killer sleeper guitarist. Not "Shredding" or "in your face". Solid Soulful Sublime Southern Rock. In my fav top 5 even stacked next to Gilmore, he def deserved more recognition. Thanks for sharing your skills & spotlighting his techniques Tom. Great Video !!! 🎸✌️

But Gary also did the lead on call me the breeze which is fast lead stuff compared to his more laid back soulful style. Later times he had one of the other guitarists do that lead.. Be Gary did the original lead on the Album. I love Gary's lead stuff on tuesdays gone the Live at the fox album.

@@raybassman7536 I just meant he wasn't a "shredder", but a highly nuanced & gifted player. I agree completely. Just after I started playing, I found a new copy of OMFTR on the street, delivering papers on Sunday am. A "Street Survivor" before the album. I learned a lot playing along & learning. Didn't know it at the time but Gary ( & Allen & somewhat Steve ) taught me bends & so much more. Different players, but right up there with Gilmore in my top 5 ✌️

@@raybassman7536 PS - Tuesday's Gone was the 1st song I tried learning off OMFTR. Sweet Soulful bends & melody. These guys, and I mean the whole family through changes over time, were unmatchable. The current Tribute line-up continues that tradition with spot on killer performances. RIP Gary 🎶🎸🙏

Yes I knew what you meant. I love it when Gary holds notes out, It's so powerful the way he does it. Like in "I Need You." I had the privaledge and Honor to meet Gary and talk to him in a non rushed situation. There were getting ready to board the Bus pretty soon to play at an ampitheatre. I told Gary that even though I am a Bass player, I bought my first Les Paul because of him. I told him I used to listen to OMFTR at night with the lights turned off, and headphones on. I could see those guys playing on stage while listening. Gary Laughed , he got a kick out of that. Then I whipped out my" First And Last" album and he signed it for me.Gary was down to earth, He signed it like he was taught in school to write, so you can read it, No BS rockstar signiture.@@in2livinit

@@in2livinit The most accomplished guitar player was most likely "Ed King" but Gary & Alan have always been my favorite guitar players in the group. However, the guitar playing on "I Know A Little" is way out of my reach, and that was "Steve Gains" But "Swamp Music" was an "Ed King" tune. They had some killer, guitar work in all their tunes didn't they? Another killer guitarist that doesn't get mentioned much is "Duane Roland" Those first three "Molly Hatchet" albums were truly badass!"

Thanks for putting in the time for this Tom. This may sound dumb but for me I have to ask. Or get your opinion. String muting. While you are cording this string mute that one and this one. Do you think I need to just get down what I'm working on first. Then after I'm comfortable start working on muting unwanted ringage. Or start muting and practicing said riff/song from the beginning. It just seems like a lot for a intermediate player to have to deal with. But any and all advice will be appreciated. Thanks.

My 2-cents... practice like you wanna sound when you actually play. Otherwise when you play, you may risk sounding like you're practising. Better to spend the extra time to really nail something down even if it takes longer opposed to shortcuts and "bad habits". As they say; old habits can be hard to break. Apologies for interjecting MHO Chucklee. Good luck !

@@markusferguson2985 thanks man. My uncle use to tell me. Screw that old saying practice makes perfect. He said if you are practicing wrong then how is whatever you are practicing gonna be right. That's what I've been doing. Just seems to make sense to have it down to muscle memory/habit. Is to do it all the time. Main reason I ask is because of short term memory loss I have from a car accident in 1990. It's so hard to remember so much at one time for me. But I guess take smaller bites.

I learned by copying a guitar player's style as closely as I could. In my early years I'd play a bunch of Rossington licks. It didn't sound great in the beginning, but over time it got closer to his style. That's how you learn to refine your playing.
