Tom, glad to see the videos again - I really dig that you are all things Skynyrd! I started playing years ago and took a 20 year hiatus after my Pop passed away, depressed I guess. Now I'm back playing for the love of the guitar and therapy. I really like your videos, they are helping me get back to it, so to speak!

Glad see you back helping out dummies like me by explaining things to those of us that don’t have patience and no grasp on theory. I just wanna have fun and play, but been noodling for 30 years and still cant play worth a crap, cant solo. 😡Very frustrating

What you're explaining here Tom is that there are two types of instrument players. Players who learn off of theory and can explain exactly what their playing to the book and then players who just jump on, grab the instrument desired and play it with feel. Most of the greatest players had little to no access to musical theory and just played based off of feel. The best music we have is played from feel and not theory. Theory for feel players is either never learned or learned way after the fact. I can give you a great example of this. My brother was playing guitar around a theory trained musician. The theory trained musician loved what my brother was playing but got into a debate with my brother about how what he was playing was "incorrect".

Great tips! I've been playing a couple years and I notice I naturally just absorb theory(notes that go well together) over time by playing every day. It took me a year to figure out "what exactly is a key?" Then I decided to just learn all the chords in C and I realized it's just chords and notes that sound right together. I just made a printout of each key and post it on the wall. And over time they get memorized. I recently started learning "Flirtin with Disaster" and learned a few things. It gets pretty tricky in the solo because like you said it's subtle things he does you have to get right.

I'm a perfect ex. of how the differences of learning guitar with theory as opposed to feel. I started at 13 getting lessons from a big music lesson venue who taught using good old Mel Bay books for about 3 years. Hey I learn how to read some pretty complex music sheets on the go and picking and fingering techniques for sure. Next was a well known jazz teacher in my area who taught me all about theory itself and circle of 5ths, modes, etc. Still wasn't happy with what I played musically. My friends were playing rock songs and I was playing all the fancy jazz chords and different inversion, etc. They were impressed with what I knew and how I could play a song by reading sheet music. Next I went to a well know rock teacher where I started to realize playing guitar with feeling was so much more fun. I will say having all that background knowledge really helped me once I got to that point. Only problem was at that point in life I stopped practicing my lessons and wasted a good year or 2 of lessons from a great teacher. When I really learned the most about playing guitar the way I wanted was after I stopped playing due to wife and kids for maybe 10 years, after divorce and kids being older hanging out with their friends I got back into it with just jamming by myself with backing chords and this ZOOM PS2 mini recorder with all kinds of bells and whistles for 4 to 8 hours a day into to the wee hours regularly. I was on a roll, feeling like I could play anything. Then got married a 2nd time and soon life got in the way again. Now single again, I'm trying to get back that magic, but life does has it's ways of putting up blocks. But I still get 30 minutes to and hour a few times a week. I just seem to forget what I worked on the day or 2 before. So I never really repeat my practices. Just go on to whatever I'm feeling. To me the best thing is to jam with others or playing along with backing tracks if you can't do the 1st

I’ve been stuck in the theory land for the last 2 years because I had to… had to understand why certain notes worked. Thanks for the tip that I need to switch gears and practice on my playing by learning to play the masters.

you and i like the same music, what you're saying makes sense to me. been playing for 40 something years but learn something every time i play or watch this channel and play. it's taken me this long to get decent at playing and you hit points where you improve overnight and sometimes longer with no change. one day you pick up the guitars because they are all different and find you use them for different things and you realize i can do this. that is when you keep trying and get to the next level, it's a never ending journey. thanks for doing what you do.

Yep- I pretty much “learned” guitar the way you’re describing - the irony is : you never really stop “learning” guitar, ever. It’s like a multi faceted Rubric’s Cube - with no one correct way to express the idea, there can be several (phrasing, key change etc.). I think a major hurdle for the absolute beginner is simply technique - and that comes mostly from hours of practice. Your ears really have to be your “instructor” - but that’s a dual complimentary thing, bc you’re practicing technique and at the same time practicing your ear to hear correct pitch etc. I think once a certain proficiency in technique is achieved, it’s easier to scale your level of ability - it’s a never ending journey , and that’s why guitar is so intriguing and fun to learn/play

Excellent advice as always. I haven't touched my guitar for months, but I'm planning to take lessons this fall. The instructor I'm going to have is a lot like you in his methods and style.

I have been playing guitar for close to 45 years now and I started out the same way I played for years just learning the patterns and how to move the root note but the the last 10 years or so now I have been have been studying theory what really opened up the fret board for me was learning all the 1st and second inversions. nice playing bud !!

Imo Peter green and a Danny Kirwan we’re the first original dual guitars with wailing bends and the best vibrato. BBking said Greeny was the best guitar player he ever heard

I agree 100%, using the same process I went from not reading music or having played sax, to reading music and playing the sax.... in solo gigs. 2 yrs tops.
