I know that there are a lot of people who hate Ewan, but I don't think I will ever understand why. Out of the entire cast, he has the clearest understanding of things. He hits the nail straight on the head. Logan was a complex human being, but he also was a person who made the conscious decision to feed into every dark impulse he could. The story of his aunt and uncle guilting him into believing that he killed his own sister with polio is so important, because it stresses that we all have the power to shape the people around us. We all have some darkness inside, hatred for other people, hatred for ourselves, but when you *feed* that hatred, you make it grow. Logan believed he was just telling the world what they wanted to hear, but that's not true. He was feeding the darkness in the hearts of men, so that he could turn a buck. That's the truth.

Agree so much with Strong about the speech being better by not being prepared by Kendall. You can see what a prepared speech would've been like with Roman acting out his version at the start of the episode. When the responsiblity is foisted on kendall so suddenly, he doesn't have time to make a PR version of a eulogy of his dad, it feels real. I mean there's an agenda in there sure, but it still felt like "What did I really think about my father, at the end of it all?". Like he's realizing the things he's saying them as he's saying them
@AW-uv3cb
@AW-uv3cb Жыл бұрын
Kendall generally seems to do much better in public when he doesn't have time to overthink (the eulogy, the "my father is a malignant present" speech etc.) and that's a winning trait for him. It seems like in those moments his hidden confidence can finally shine through, while on a day to day basis he flounders under the weight of wanting to live up to Logan's (and his own) expectations and that's what does it for him. Shiv is the opposite: she tends to be very self-possessed and quietly authoritative in private situations (the scene in Norway when Matsson notices her because she's just sitting there and observing like he is, while her brothers try to impress him, or the scene with Mencken in the last episode where everyone flocks to him and one word from her draws him away from the rest. Also the way she took charge when Logan was out of it at the shareholders meeting). But she flounders and blurts stuff out when she's put on the spot in public (the Pierce's dinner, the interview in Switzerland) and that ruins her public image - maybe it's because she was never given the chance to practice her public performances? Anyway it's a shame, because she's clearly very capable behind the scenes, as her political career shows. In both cases - makes you think how formidable they both could be if given proper support from their dad (for Ken emotional support, for Shiv professional).

How does this show just keep getting better and better!! OMG!!! The writing not just through this season, but the whole show has really come full circle with a lot of it's beats in this episode. Specifically with the kids relationship to Logan. The speeches on the podium were all so unique and perfectly encapsulated the way they felt about Logan. Roman kept saying he's pre-grieved, but it's just not something you can really do in my opinion. No matter how prepared you are, no matter how much you've set yourself, the emotions will come out. It could be before, at the moment of death, the funeral, or years after. We all deal with grief differently. I thought Kendall's speech was a lot more of what we know of his thoughts to be, he doesn't really mask or cover up how he feels about his father. Shiv's speech was the most interesting in my opinion (and the performance was immaculate) because you not only see the sorrow, you see the hatred she has, and I think Shiv and Roman were the kids who most played the denial of how cruel Logan really was to them. They showed different sides to them that we haven't seen. Truly an incredible episode of television.

I agree with Strong, Kendall’s speech was great, kind of perverse in its admiration of power and might, but it was a similar kind of moment to Kendall’s attempt at a vote of no confidence on his father, Roman completely shrinks into something pitiful in front of everyone, and then Kendall shows that he’s in control

James Cromwell's passion, the pride that William Villanova takes in his work, and Jeremy Strong - when he first started answering ("the vitality, the life force, the vim") did anyone else wondered for a second: wait, is he still in character? ;-) But immediately afterwards I was struck with how gentle and kind his voice sounds in real life as opposed to Kendall's perpetual tightness. I was thinking that Roman would die in the end of the episode. The story of Logan’s younger sister could have been some sort of foreshadowing. Glad it didn’t. Uff

From the last 2 episodes it's pretty clear Logan was holding Kendall back, Kendall IS a killer.

James Cromwell is such a brilliant actor. I loved his eulogy about his brother, Logan. It was honest and true. The fact no one clapped shows me that the audience is in the same mode as Logan; greed, capitalism and power. When Kendall spoke, he got an applause but again, it shows me all the phonies within that church. Logan Roy was a dark-hearted man who constanly berated & tramatized his children. That's his legacy, IMO.

It struck me as odd in the interview with Bill Villonova that they use professional casket bearers. I guess this happens in high profile funerals but at every funeral I've ever been to, they usually use extended members of the family. I was asked to help carry my grandmother's casket for instance. I didn't feel like I needed special training or anything. The funeral home people just directed us.

I hope so. The original plan/promise was Kendall would take over. Logan renigged on that and made it clear to Kendall that he had no confidence in him to do it right. Everyone else feared Logan and wouldn't back Kendall, although Kendall always had the capability. I guess power is a hard thing to give up...more addictive than money.

Have really only watched season 4, but I was surprised to see Ewan’s speech. Was very good but Greg taking his legs out might’ve been even better lol

'Tour de force'. The single greatest episode of television I've ever watched... till next week. James Cromwell... wow. 83, and you would not know it. Certainly made that Capitalist, Swisher, shrink - and it was great to finally hear a challenge from a Socialist on these podcasts. I almost wanted him to end his eulogy with, "That'll do, Pig. That'll do."
