In today’s video we talk about a highly debated topic in the African cichlid & fish keeping hobby, OB’s! These fish are a man-made strain that originated from hobbyists breeding Aulonocara & Mbuna together.
The first few generations of this combination developed orange blotches on their body which is why the fish are called “OB” peacocks in today’s hobby. Due to African cichlid hobbyists line breeding these fish, overtime they have developed crazy coloration and patterns ranging from pinks to dark blues!
The one shown in the video was for sale at wet pets and friends in Mcmurray pa. I really debating getting him! A truly beautiful fish......even if it’s not “naturally” found in Lake Malawi.
Let me know your own personal thoughts on OB African cichlids in the comments below!
Thanks for watching!

If they are hybrids that are selectively bred then that's fine. These are fish that are "farmed" for the aquarium hobbyist and if a hybrid fish attracts new hobbyists then so be it. So long as it isn't being injected with any kind of chemicals then it isn't an issue

blueman for sure! That’s another issue entirely isn’t it. I’m noticing a lot of places getting those “juiced” fish in from time to time. Looks like it’s becoming more of an issue. Thanks for watching & commenting my friend👍🏻

I can see your point on wanting to keep a pure strain tank and I also agree some man made strains are getting out of hand. However I'm also a fan of the OB peacock. The thing that I find fascinating about the OB is there aren't any 2 identical peacocks they all have different color patterns, it's what makes them special. Sure everyone has a blue neon, a sunshine peacock, a German red but no one will ever have the same OB peacock as you, I think that's what gives them value, although they aren't natural.

Volcann91 totally agree man! I don’t think some of the man-made strains are getting out of hand....I personally think they’re awesome! I love how we (as hobbyists/breeders) are making certain strains better and improving their color/finnage. Really cool thing to see! Agree with you on only YOU having that specific ob. Neat way to look at it👍🏻

I've heard the same thing as well. I got my first OB about 3-4 weeks ago. Nice 2.75" guy. He's in with a bunch of 3.5-4" peacocks. My ablino firefish is the tank boss in there. The OB minds his own business. How big is that OB at the store? 5"? Maybe set up a breeder for him and get him some ladies! GREAT COLORS! Always a high high demand for quality OB's. Best of luck!

I've got to say my friend I'm impressed with your fish & your keen eye for detail. IMHO as long as people are honest about what they are, I don't think there is anything wrong with "Aquarium Strain" African Cichlids who have been created by experienced professionals who know exactly what they're doing. That's the KEY though, *"pros who know exactly what they're doing."* I define Linebred as purebred lake strain individuals within their species, being selectively & deliberately chosen for enhanced color, shape & fins. High-quality professionally produced Hybrids like the OBs & Dragonblood Firefish are acceptable as well IMV. The problem I have is thoughtless, undisciplined aquarist & experimenters who think they're going to create something NEW without having the proper knowledge & high standards of breeding & meticulous stringent culling (discarding) of deformities & anything that isn't of the highest caliber. Many of these untrained folks dump hordes of of these inferior mongrils into LFS when they should have been fish food or fertilizer. *That just hurts the hobby IMHO.* The uneducated LFSs who willing buy this junk share in the blame as well. That's really my only complaint! Information about the topic is lacking & people should be educated about the time, dedication, commitment, money, knowledge & understanding needed to for-go such complex breeding endeavors. Just my two cents.....

J.L. Herington breeding these fish definitely takes a while & a lot of tanks/components. I think some hobbyists think it’s easy to get a group, breed them, strip them for tumbling & grow out fry. It takes a good while! Haha thanks for checking out this one mate👍🏻

Good evening Sir. I do not like the fact that they are basically man-made, but I have an OB in the 108 Gallon which I thought was really nice looking and I got it because I could not resist, I would normally say no to them, but I have to give you my honest answer, if you are looking to have Strain then perhaps you should leave the OB out. I've been in the hobby awhile, started in salt and growing corals, now Africans, and now my favorites are the OBs by far, I take a German red peacock, red flush peacock, flavescents, and some OBS like the ones in your video and breed to 6 females at a time, swapping the male after each holding

If you don’t go to Wet Pets this weekend before I do, you might not get the chance again, ha. I really like OBs. For most people who purchase Africans its all about the color and OBs fit the bill in spades on that note. Obviously they are a big liability if you are selectively breeding your fish. If you have a tank guy could go in I absolutely would snatch him up. Btw, did you see any larger green terror fish or severums there. My 166 is finally done cycling and I’m big time in fish acquisition mode.

I had never really had a problem with the OB Peacocks except just like any species, some of them are too aggressive while others are average aggression. That being said, now days they are coming up with OB this and OB that. Too many OB's for my taste. The OB you show there is an Amazing specimen and I would have jumped on him, but ultimately it's up to you. If you like him, buy him. If your gut tells you not to do it, stay pure. There is a difference between owning one and breeding one. Good luck, I could see it being a difficult choice for you. Peace my friend!

So why do I see ob on vídeos where people are diving in lake Malawi?
@scottmerrow7617
@scottmerrow7617 2 жыл бұрын
But they are kind of natural, happening in rare instances in the lake, just not starting their own populations.. So one could look at it as keeping one of nature's "tries", "mistakes" or "failures" alive. Many fish fit this category. Every angelfish with anything other than black lines is an "OB" or "doesn't count" if you ask me. Not found in nature is not found in nature. One could argue that OB's are more natural than line bred for colors and marbling are. As if "we found out" 2 species could interbreed and it never happened in lake Malawi. And like someone else said, Injecting fish with colors is criminal if you ask me.

All aquarium fish are man made? Are you serious?😂 many are wild caught but a lot are also bred” by hobbyists and resold or by corporations. @@cichlidscape If it comes out of a fish tank, it's man made. A wild caught and sold fish is no longer wild after acclamation to the fish tank life. All activities are no longer "wild conditions". Unless you can simulate tide, and weather, it's no longer a wild fish. It's just another aquarium fish. It's okay to say and buy man made fish, fish in glass box are just fish in glass box, it's not a wild fish anymore.
