The Buenos Aires Tetra's were a mistake.....but not for you reasons you think!
In this video we talk about the Buenos Aires Tetra and the reason why we returned them to our LFS in exchange for a different AWESOME Tetra.
The awesome Tetra we exchanged these for are Head & Tail Light Tetra, who showcase great coloration and most importantly school toward the top of the aquarium which is huge in this specific tank due to the other inhabitants in there.
If you are committed enough to watch the vast majority of the video you'll also see a teaser of what's to come! I imagine this might be exciting for folks who have been with this channel since the beginning. All I will say is, STAY TUNED!
Thank you for watching & supporting the channel!

My buenos aires were monsters from day one. I put 5 in a 20 gallon alone. They nipped and chased each other and didn't seem to school at all. After a month 4 of the 5 seemed to chill so I added in some green barbs. They are titled as semi aggressive so I figured they could hold their own. Well I was wrong and after one week they shredded one of the green barbs so now I have a 20 gallon with 5 green barbs and a 20 gallon with 5 buenos aires.. so I'm torn about returning them. After all the research I've done I just don't think I want to risk trying another breed for tank mates for them...

You shold get a bigger tank for them, BA tetras get large, 3 inches large, and are fairly active, most would generally advise at least 30 gallons to keep a group of 6. 5 of them in a 20 gallon means higher aggression, as they feel threatened from each other and the environment living in such close quarters.

Very nice, Lamp eye tetras also like the top. Great decision on getting some more to add to tank. Hope you do an update of the tank with the bigger school.

Thanks for checking it out man. Thought about the Columbian blues also? I may even add them eventually but like I mentioned toward the end of the video, things will be moving round soon in this tank so I don’t want to do too much to it short term. The Buenos Aires were very nice. Just didn’t work in this specific tank you know👍🏻

I’ve just added 10 Buenos Aries tetra to my 100 gallon tank with 2 gold severums & 3 electric blue acara, so far they are doing well schooling all over the tank, I’ve heard they need to be kept in large groups so il be adding another 5. Apparently they do better in larger tanks over 75 gallons

Mine are very aggressive towards each other. I had 6 in a 55 gallon with a fire mouth and ghost knife and rainbow shark. I had to take the smallest Buenos Aries out because he was getting so beat up. He lost an eye. But he’s doing much better in his new tank with platys mollies and angels.

Mine were kinda aggro but somehow didn’t bother the plants. Or other tetras. I had a few anubius nana tucked away in the crevices and corners of a 37 gal. Tank and they did just fine w/ the tetras. I love their colors too, and they were super hard fish. I’d love to do a smaller species only setup someday, like a 10 or 15 gal (~55-60l I think)

Thanks for the video! I'd like to add my experience, as I don't see much on these fish. I have 13 in a 180 (6ft tank). I bought them 10 months ago. I have vals, java fern, anubias and java moss, and they don't seem to eat any plants. Pros: big and fast, they school, they eat well, I don't notice nipping (except for one time I suspect they nipped a long trailing fin of an Argentea I had with them in there). Mine swim mid/bottom level. One, when smaller, survived at least a few days in my canister filter and made a comeback. I have varied the lights, tired different temps (23-27, I know they have a broad range and this would be at the top, but I want to keep them with cichlids), and the deal breaker for me - they are too skittish. I have this tank beside my work-at-home office desk. I'm not moving much. Any movement, they spaz, and I feel like that nervous vibe is causing my cichlids (I've had different ones, a green terror, convicts, red devil - all bold types) to be a little wary themselves. So I want to sell them and maybe do without dithers and reassess the tank vibe. They only thing is - they are FAST! I fear I'll have to rip apart my scape to get them all. I have a juvie red devil in there now, maybe it will grow big enough to eat them for me.

Thanks for sharing Corey! Are there shadows on the tank from above or anything like that when you move? I know that can really spooke fish

@@cichlidscape Good point to raise! My tank is covered, the room is dim, nobody but me in it. They seem to have been a little more chill when younger. I have clean water (by my test strips anyway). I have a Fluval FX6, a HOB filter, air stone, wavemaker (that has all been constant). I added 5 small polar blue convicts, that's the main change I can think of. They don't seem to interact at all. I'm lightly stock right now as all the fish I have are juvies. I did have a cyano outbreak a little while ago, kept the tank darker and got a dimmer. I can't explain it, and of course their behaviour could be directly because of something I'm doing/introducing into the tank with scape changes/atmospehere in the room. I'm in Canada (Montreal), days are getting short, this is the first winter I've had them, maybe the change in the room's ambient lighting intensity (there are windows)? I'm just sick of watching them tucked all in a ball, facing the same direction, and waiting to spaz. When it's feeding time? They go back to normal, swim a bit, and then back into their ball!

Yeah, in my personal experience they do better in larger groups... More like 15-20 as a minimum.... They have always been too aggressive for me in anything smaller than a group of about 15. I have 29 in a 225gal right now and they do really well there with a large school of Congo tetra and a Rainbow shark.... You cant believe most of what is said about them online as most sites seem to lump all Tetra together as far as aggression. They should also do well in semi aggressive set ups of similar sized fish... EDIT: I also wanted to add that they need space, unlike a lot of other tetras, due to size, activity level and the minimum number needed i wouldn't personally keep them in anything smaller than a 55gal.

Oh...I just bought 9 of them for my 35 gallons planted tank were I have vallisneria gigantea and some echinodorus. Am I in for trouble in the future?🤔 Also, mine seem to be settled in top right corner with some middle tank action, and they seem rather shy. 😲

They definitely eat plants, but its nothing major so far. What I am unsure of is how they are doing with the amano shrimp I added. I ordered 12, 1 was DOA, and I have between 3-6 of the 11 left. I've seen 4, but no more than that grouped. It's a heavily planted tank, so hard to spot them sometimes, but I haven't witnessed them attacking the shrimp, but finding them dead could indicate an issue there. They may well be dying for other reasons as I've seen some molted shells, but the water hardness reads okay for that, and the tank is fully cycled.
