This is the first Schofield review of any I've seen that mentioned the cylinder rotation quirk. If I could turn the cylinder "backwards", I definitely would think the hand/pawl/ratchet was broken. Thanks Hickok, for yet again imparting more knowledge that's not available everywhere. Keep on doing what you're doing, you are appreciated. 👍

Retail price on the one you are shooting is $1341. The 7-inch barrel is $1515. I have never had a moment’s trouble with my 7-inch Cimarron Schofield and I am surprised st how accurate it is, considering the rudimentary sights.
@Indarow
@Indarow 11 ай бұрын
Schofield himself is responsible for the wide open sights, he wanted it to be quick and easy to get a reliable sight picture in the heat of battle while on horseback. the original S&W no.3 sights were tighter and harder to get a good sight picture.

Loved my 7 inch when I had it but like you, I just couldn't not fall head over heels for it. It was accurate, quick to reload, and empty the spent casings but I just couldn't get over the way the grip felt. I didn't like the way it felt in my hand compared to a SAA or Remington. I sold it and although it was a pleasure to own, I never looked back after I parted with it.

Love your channel hickok45. Would love to have one of these. I have an original Schofield with 7 inch that has been passed down from great grandfather's mothers brother, he gave him when he came west. Her brother was a officer in calvary, when he retired he had the option of buying his side arm. At the time was $35 had it been a Colt it would have been $7.

You mentioned that your Cimarron Schofield is a little strange e.g. the cylinder turning freely and such. I bought a Taylor's & Co. awhile back and it jammed up and would not cycle so I took it to a smith. It also acted weirdly and inconsistently as you described. Turns out that someone in the chain had added a (chromed) piece of metal to the internals that was supposed to act as a safety so that the gun could be sold in California. The smith referred to the extraneous part as a "California safety" in a "doesn't everyone know?" manner and asked me if I wanted it removed. Once the piece of junk was removed, the gun began to operate normally i.e. only on the first hammer click (drop safety) does the cylinder freely spin as it is supposed to do. In any other status, the cylinder is locked. Pete from Prescott

I've only seen one Schofield, in person, at a gun shop. It was chambered in .44 Russian, complete with lanyard. The gun itself wasn't particularly pricy, but they only had one box of ammo, and... it was genuine, as in "back in the day" genuine. I love these guns, they're on my bucket list, but 200 bucks for a box of ammo was a bit on the extreme side, needless to say, so something like the one in the video is definitely a better idea. Even if someone makes modern .44 Russian, I'd rather have more common ammo.

Great video as always and neat gun. S&W’s Mountain Gun also seems to have tighter throats. Colt’s Lightning in my experience won’t let most anything but the original RNFP around the bend to get from loading gate to magazine. Fortunately RNFP loaded a touch short shoots excellent in SAA and lever guns, so that’s all I run.

You could only load three of the schofield rounds into the original colts due to the wider rim diameter at the the time. The current loadings of .45 colt are not based on the original cartridge but of a newer cartridge developed in the early 1900's specifically designed to work with star type ejector/extractors with a greater cylinder diameter for the firearms and a greater rim diameter with the rounds themselves.

I’ve heard that the Army had both Schofields and Colts, though mostly Colt, but as you say, they transitioned to 45 Schofield ammo for the remainder of the Army’s use of the Colt 1873 for logistical reasons. Question: my understanding from Wiki (for what it’s worth) is that Schofields were 230 gr bullets pushing the round to velocities around 700-800fps. Today’s 45 colt Cowboy loads that I’ve bought tend to be 250 gr pushing the bullet out at around 750 fps. So does that mean that many of today’s Cowboy loads are shooting like Schofield performance, and in turn, they are shooting as fast and hard as they originally did while in Army service after that transition from the Colt ammo to the 45 Schofield ammo? Every time I hear about 45 colt cowboy loads, it’s like people stick their noses up at them for being powder puffs loads only good for target shooting but useless for anything else. I don’t get it. As I understand it, these Schofield rounds are the basis the 45 acp performance and no one would accuse 1911s as shooting powder puff rounds. There must be something I’m missing here.

Another "irony" of the S&W 45/Schofield is the "shootability" of the cartridge in that this pressure range was the precursor for the 45acp range for handling. Ultra-Max, unfortunately, burned to the Ground.... They made a great product that covered the range of period cartridges..... They used mainly Starlite Brass....
