The 1979 Cincinnati Reds season consisted of the Reds winning the National League West under their first-year manager John McNamara, with a record of 90-71, 1½ games better than the Houston Astros.
However, the Reds lost the National League Championship Series to the eventual World Series champion Pittsburgh Pirates in three straight games.

The Big Bad "Red Machine" was my team of the decade. The summer of 1970 I found out why they were called the "Red Machine", also I found out why Pete Rose was referred to as"Charlie Hustle". Game 1of the 1970 World Series, it was late in the game and the Red's were behind by a run or two and Pete Rose was at bat, batting from the left side and drew a walk. He tossed the bat off to the side and hauled ass up the first base line as if he were trying to beat out bunt!! Pete Rose played the game at very competitive level. The fans ALWAYS got their money's worth. Thank you Pete Rose!!! The Man SHOULD be in Baseball's HAll Of fame strictly based on His PERFORMANCE on the playing field. Thank you

6 division titles, 4 NL pennants, 2 World Series championships. Not bad. Not bad at all.

And why would the Reds would part ways with Sparky Anderson after winning five of six divisions, four pennants and two World Series titles in the decade. Well Anderson would manage the the Detroit Tigers in 1979 and five years later his squad would dominate throughout the entire 1984 season and would win it all him and Tony LaRussa is the only managers win the World Series in both leagues.

Born in 70, from IL and the Reds and Foster were my team and favorite player as well. Got to shake Foster's hand at a Cal Ripken WS years later. Great thrill for me.

Despite the fact the Reds didn't win it all in 79, this team was my favorite Reds team of the 70s. They still had big name stars on the club, but ty hey weren't really picked to do that well, and they won a lot of games with guys named Collins,LaCoss,Pastore,Hume and Kinght, and also Sparky was no longer the manager either, it was a total team effort winning the West in 79. God Bless everyone.

Funny how Ray Knight would come back to haunt his old manager 7 years later.

Also, an era dominated by plastic turf in the NL: Astros, Reds, Giants, Phillies, Expos, Pirates and Cardinals. 7 of the 12 teams played on artificial surfaces much of the 1970s. The Padres and Braves also played in cookie cutter multi-purpose stadiums. Only the Cubs, Mets and Dodgers played in stadiums that looked like baseball stadiums. And the Bears and Jets shared Wrigley and Shea respectively for long stretches. Dodger Stadium alone was baseball only.

For the Giants they played on astroturf at Candlestick Park before going back to natural grass in 1979.

You're welcome. The only videos like this that I know of are this one, the 1984 Hustle's Back video and the 1990 videos/specials that MLB and WCPO put out.
