My vote is that both sequels are worth it-more than worth it. This one series where every installment is top notch and isn’t just a clone of the first movie. I have high praise for anyone involved in the trilogy because they really elevated it to something more than its original premise.

George, there were a LOT of Vikings who actually settled in Scotland and Northern England during their medieval invasions. Many stayed and permanently integrated into their new home. So historically, a Viking with a Scottish accent is not that weird… though in this historical instance, they probably didn’t have modern Scottish accents. lol

Here are the fun facts: -The animators sat through aerodynamics classes to make the dragons' flights as realistic as possible. -Simone, you were right about Toothless being cat-like because they based themselves off the movements of a cat to animate him. -His little hesitation when approaching his nose to Hiccup's hand was actually an animation glitch, but they left it because it worked so well.

The "animation glitch" story is an urban myth, however. There was apparently a glitch in the pre-render of the earlier scene where Toothless is bound - the "camera" passed through his wing. The hesitation before the first touch was deliberate though. And yes, there's a fair bit of Stitch in him too - same directors.

It was just perfect for Toothless. He was the most "catlike" of all of them. And it does so much for that dragon's character! Just a perfect decision by the animators to utilize what they had to work with, in such a way!

This trilogy is pretty much the standard bearer for family films. Charm, heart, humour, but also enough depth in what the characters go through that you can't just dismiss them as fun popcorn fluff. It's amazing just how much more meaningful the flying sequences felt in this compared to Avatar, and there are so many fun relationships between the characters, with great chemistry between Astrid and Hiccup. All the films in the trilogy are fantastic for reasons like that

Stoic is not just not listening, he's chief, he's in charge of protecting his people, who are being raided by dragons. thats his world, dragons and vikings at war, so of course he does not immediately get on board with friendly dragons. Also its so cute when he wants to talk to hiccup, he's always wanted to have something in common with his son, look how excited he is when he finally thinks he does.

When dealing with animation, it's usually the voices first because the animators can use idioms and gestures the actors make to create the same feel the voice actor was trying to convey. A lot of Jay Baruchel went into Hiccup.

_Western_ animation usually records the voices first, then animates to that. Most Asian animation is done animation first, which is why even in their native language Asian voice actors sometimes have to use odd cadences to match the mouth flaps. There are of course exceptions to both.
@JohnSmith-wd5ml

I was gonna say, ive seen a lot of behind the scene for animated stuff and ive always seen voice actors looking at monitors with the actual animation on it while recording.. i guess they were asian animation?

Which is why I always prefer watching movies and tv in the original language, both live-action and animation. (But I will watch dubbed anime if the dub is very good dubs, i.e. Full Metal Alchemist, Chainsaw Man and Death Note.)
@HiddenWindshield
@HiddenWindshield 11 ай бұрын
@@JohnSmith-wd5ml I was simplifying just a bit for the sake of being concise. Often the animators will create storyboards or animate keyframes (i.e. at a low frame rate) to help the voice actors understand what's going on around the characters, then come behind them and do the final animation to match the voices. Sometimes the voice actors will just read from scripts or teleprompters, and 100% of the animation will be done after. It just depends on the director. Also, animation first was more common in ye olden days, so a lot of e.g. classic Disney stuff was done that way.

Vikings invaded different parts of the British Isles, of course because of geography most settlements were located to the east of what today encompasses England and Scotland but they also arrived to Ireland. English as a language have a huge amount of nordic influence (you can look to Jay Foreman's Map Men Episode called 'Why are British place names so hard to pronounce?' for more). So Scottish Vikings are totally historically accurate (and English, Welsh and Irish for that matter), i guess not with modern accent but thats ok for me.

Hey guys, pro animator here. In features like this the dialogue is always recorded first and then the animator builds the performance around that track. We often shoot video of the actor as they do their record, so we can reference their facial expressions. As a result, the final scene is really an alchemy of recorded track and the imagination of the animator.

Animation like this is almost always voiced in the original language first, then animated, and then dubbed over in other languages. It's very rare that you'll see otherwise, because it's easier to sync animation to voice lines than vice versa, meaning that this way you get the best performance in the original language with the animation to match it, while with dubs some mismatch between the voice and the animation is expected so there's less pressure to match perfectly.

The Road to El Dorado is a meme factory, but also just a really good time. DO recommend with disclaimers. It's a little bit ...yeah okay no way around it, there's a bit of a problematic aspect as far as the whole "two white guys (from Spain which... that's another issue) visit a "hidden" civilization and solve problems there" sort of thing, and that's definitely something to bear in mind. But if you work with the premise that the exposition song at the beginning (starts "Our glorious city", ...etc) is LORE and describes accurate history (for the world of the movie), then they become the clueless pawns in the gods' plan who merely nudge things in the direction they need to go, which makes it all make a lot more sense. (See also: Why can they all understand eachother, why does the volcano... Do That, and wtf is up with that armadillo.) Also, they are adorable and I love them. A rogue and a bard go on an adventure.

@InkyPetrel why is two white guys from Spain an issue? You do understand that the Spanish are Europeans and, as such, have the full range of skin color and hair that any other European country has. The look of people from Latin America comes from most of them being mestizos, a mix of indigenous peoples and Spaniards. My grandfather was born and raised in Mexico in the 1880s and 90s (yes 1886 that is not a typo he would have turned 100 the year after i graduated high school but had passed 13 years earlier) and had a lot of status because he was pale with dark blonde hair and blue eyes. In other words he looked like a Spaniard not a mexican. I find it weird when people think the Spanish are not typical white people.

9:22 yup. That's how animation is done most of the time. The actors record their lines first and then the animators bring that performance to life, usually by recording themselves acting out the lines in a reference video. I have seen it done the other way around on anime, where the animation gets done first and then the actors record their lines while having it play in front of them.

John Powell is frickin awesome writing the music for this movie. In the "test drive" scene, the first part of the music was Toothless theme. And Hiccup is not piloting the flight as he is still looking at cheat sheet. When Hiccup starts to take control and they dive down, it was Hiccup's theme. And when they fell bc of the cheat sheet is blown by the wind, it's chaotic and neither one of their theme. When Hiccup goes back to Toothless's back and Toothless deploy his wings, it was Toothless theme, Toothless is in control and as if asking Hiccup where are they going. And finally when Hiccup threw the cheat sheet, the music is both of their theme combined, as if they are trusting each other and working together to fly around the rocks. This movie is awesome!

If you re-watch Gobber at the start of significant training sequences tells you what's going on. Most folks miss his line to Hiccup, "don't worry they'll see you as sick or insane..." then after Toothless takes the fish, he looks him up and down and gives Hiccup the bigger half. A "you need this more than I do" moment :)

Yes most animated movies have the actors voice record before they do the animation. They use story boards for the actors.

Toothless looks so much like a cat that you will never be able to see a goofy black cat with big round yellow eyes anymore and not think of Toothless.

9:30 a little info about voice acting Most of the time they voice act to a story board then the animators do the animation Some times the animation staff do the voice animate it then the voice actor does the real one

1:25 - George, you may want to watch a certain "A bit of Fry and Laurie" sketch called "Your name?"... It's not a fork, but the idea is the same 🤣

As kids we joked that there was a temple in China where they went to name their babies. There were plenty of bowls, empty, full, hall full in varying degrees. They'd throw a pebble and it struck the bowls and depending on the sound it made, the Chinese named the babies.

The Scottish accents are accurate, due to the extensive heritage and influence of the Vikings in the Hebrides (the islands on Scotland's west coast), as well as Norway ruling the Orkney Isles until the 16th century. The history of Scotland is a mix of influences from the Picts, the Gaels, the Brythonic peoples of Strathclyde, the Vikings of Denmark and Norway, the Normans, and the English.

"Why do the Vikings have Scottish accents?" well, if you knew a little about Scottish history, you'd find out that they're kinda related (there's a lot of history going back 100's of years!)

The animation references for Toothless were all the cats and dogs of the creature animators. The dog mannerisms are less obvious though, he definitely comes off as big, flying, fire breathing, cat.

Yes all three are worth watching, and I don't know about George, but do believe the third will be Simone's favorite. But along with the movies, there is also a series.

This movie will forever be up there for me as one of 2010's best animated movies. I'm so happy you two enjoyed it. Would highly recommend reacting to the two sequels. Collectively, they make a wonderful film trilogy.

One of the best series! Usually with sequels they are hit or miss, but with this one everything is worth watching, including the TV show! Toothless is one of my favorite animated characters, along with Stitch from Lilo & Stitch & Baymax from Big Hero 6. He really is like a big kitty cat LOL 🥰😸So glad you both enjoyed the movie! ~Caroline

DEX and CHR you freakin Mage! Bards FTW! My kids watched these when they were just wee lil'uns. Now they're about to graduate High School, and we all still love these movies. Just goes to show you that quality, fun, and well written characters stick with a person. WHOA there! "Tragic backstory..mom prolly pased away." Ummm, no. These are friggin dragon fightin Vikings. She died bravely fighting 7 dragons single handedly, while she saved a basket full of puppies, kittens and babies, and put out several Houses that were on fire, and had dinner on the table for the men before she was chosen by the Valkyries cuz she was too baddass for mere mortals. LOL

People are cast once character designs are locked. It is storyboard, then dialogue is recorded. Animation is roughed in, then effects are added.

This was the first film where DreamWorks used a lot of cinematic lighting to enhance the story rather than trying to show off the graphics and models. Apparently quite a few artists were upset that their work became shrouded in darkness during nighttime and indoor scenes.
