As Legal Eagle highlighted when he did a video on this movie, Law Schools WANT people with diverse academic Bachelors to go to Law school. Can you imagine how much the big fashion brands (Dior, Armani, etc.) would pay a lawyer that also knew the ends and outs of the fashion industry, fashion marketing, and textiles before they even start as an Associate?! Someone who can write up cease and desists for knock off brands, marketing company contracts, company acquisitions and merges? Talk about a high paid lawyer

The "what, like it's hard?" line is an extra burn when you realize he was put on the waiting list at first and his father had to call in a favor, so in fact, yes it was hard for him. Also, it's unfortunate that Warner says he needs a Jackie and not a Marilyn. Marilyn Monroe was really smart and really progressive for her time. People just underestimated her, but maybe that was the point the writers were trying to make.

Elle is extremely smart, she didn’t get lucky or cheat, she did it all on her own. A good representation of a strong and intelligent female protagonist without sacrificing the “girly” interests and personality. Most movies like to portray intelligent people as if that is their whole personality, but that’s just not reality. Honestly, this movie has a lot of truth and wisdom within.

Law school is indeed 3 years. My daughter adored this movie when she was about 10 -- maybe partly because I'd been a lawyer for a while and was by that time teaching law courses for a poli sci department. We had the video, so she watched it often, and usually wanted me to watch it with her. Some sweet father daughter bonding time: I came to appreciate the film. I played the Perfect Day song once before my con law class, and it was fun to watch the faces on a few of the women undergrads in the class light up. I think there may have been a generation who were inspired to study law partly because of this movie.

23:58 She's a blonde woman as well - and being at least 20 years older than Elle, it's made a lot of people guess it was even harder for her to get taken seriously as a law student or a lawyer when she started. Fan theory is that that's why she was tough on Elle in particular, warning her about what's ahead of her and toughening her up so that she can face it.

Bless this movie. Growing up a lot of movies equated ultra-girly with airheaded bimbo, and it was considered "character growth" for a pretty young blonde to denounce her love of fashion and glitter in favour of suits and books, as if those are mutually exclusive interests. Elle Woods never had to tone down her brand of feminine to prove her intelligence. You can love pink, and cute little dogs, and feather-tipped pens AND be academically serious and inspirational.

I think the lesson of the movie is less about "kill them with kindness," and more like "don't let others change you because they don't understand you." Elle comes close when she considers quitting over Callahan's advances and Vivian being mean to her. Since this is a movie, it does have a happy ending, but in the real world the happy ending would just be Elle continuing to be her bright and spirited self despite whatever setbacks the world throws at her. Elle's one-liner about "orange is the new pink" at the little introductory circle on the lawn is a reference to the 2001 cult classic Josie and the Pussycats (also produced by Marc Platt), which is one of my all-time favorite movies. I imagine it's too obscure to be in the running but I would kill to see you guys cover that film, as it's an unexpectedly great cartoon satire of the music industry. Elle's friend David Kidney is played by Osgood Perkins, son of Psycho star Anthony Perkins. He has since gone on to move behind the camera, directing movies more than appearing in them.

I would also add "Be true to yourself" to that lesson list. In spite of how much trouble it caused her Elle never once altered who she is or what she loves to achieve her goals or appease others. As a guy who spent most of his formative years as a shy, self conscious, introverted nerd who was bullied ruthlessly in school for just being who I was only to find that in adult life being unapologetically myself in all things has only served to benefit me, socially and otherwise, Elle's a role model.

Its kind of understated just how much she earned her place there, a perfect score on the LSAT is 180. She got nearly a perfect score on a notoriously hard test. Easily top 1-3% going in. Just cause her passions are clothes etc, doesnt mean shes not super intelligent.

She also has a 4.0 GPA in fashion merchandising, which is a business major (fashion designers need lawyers too) and was the president of her sorority (showing leadership skills). The reason why it seemed so easy for Elle to get into Harvard was because she's already naturally intelligent and had most of the qualifications to enter Harvard. She was ONLY missing an acceptable LSAT score.

I love Elle. Literally one of my favorite film characters. She’s a great example of a strong female protagonist - they never diminish her very girly personality for more masculine traits, but they never just make that her personality. She’s smart, driven as hell. Awesome movie.
@boboca20

The thing about this movie is that not only the characters, but ourserlves are constantly judging Elle. She is not dumb or less capable than any of us, as a matter of fact she is very much successfull in everything she CHOSES to do, and somehow us and her peers in Harvard seem to look down on her just because WE don't think what she does is anything special, like knowing every fashion trend for example. And that's why is so satisfactory to see her succeed without letting go of her bubbly and "pinkish" personality. The lesson here is: DON'T EVER let people judge your choices in life, neither judge people by their looks.

26:35 The standard degree needed to practice law in the US and Canada is a JD (juris doctorate), which is earned after 3 years of law school (plus the 4 years of undergrad coursework to get a bachelors before starting law school). There are more advanced degrees in law that take longer to earn, such as the doctorate of juridical science, which is pretty much a PhD in law, but this type of degree is more for those who are interested in academic research.
@maisiesummers42

That's the U.S. requirements, and means that our "blonde" had to have a Bachelor's degree (in any subject), which makes sense given she's in a sorority at the start of the film. In New Zealand, you can gain a Bachelor of Laws degree right from the start, without needing any other undergrad work first. Not sure about other countries, though I think it's the same in the U.K.
@Vertifuge
@Vertifuge Жыл бұрын
While the Juris Doctorate (JD) degree existed in the USA since shortly after the Civil War (1870s or so), it was more of an academic or research degree at that stage. Up until the 1960s, an attorney with a college degree would generally have held an LL.B -- a bachelor's degree, as in much of the world today. However, it was generally expected that an aspiring attorney would have several years of experience working, or alternatively studying the liberal arts (grammar, rhetoric, logic, etc), before undertaking such a degree. Starting after WWII, there was a movement to solidify legal practice on the same level as other professional fields, such as medicine, and awarding a post-baccalaureate degree in law was one way to elevate it. Today, a 4-year undergraduate degree is almost universally required for admission to a 3-year program for a JD, and a JD is required to sit for a state bar exam. Today the JD is a professional degree more than an academic degree like a PhD; however yes, a recipient is allowed the title doctor. Of course, using that title in front of one's name is considered pompous and worse; I've only seen it used that way seriously in the field of education. Interestingly, there are four (out of fifty) US states that still permit someone to apprentice under a practicing attorney for a minimum of two years, and then sit for that state's bar examination (and thus be admitted to the practice of law without a JD.) The pass rate for such people is pretty miserable, generally cited as 10-20% of test takers. Kim Kardashian is on this path right now -- not a fan, but I definitely wish her the very best in this and more power to her! -- and it took her four attempts to pass the "baby bar" in California, which is a sort of practice test. It is a one-day exam testing three pre-known areas -- Criminal Law, Torts, and Contracts. An actual bar exam lasts two or three full days (depending on the state) and can test any multitude of legal subjects; a large part of it is identifying the correct issues and not falling for the red herrings liberally scattered throughout. Sheeh, well hope any of that ramble was interesting.

One of the people I consider a "ride or die" best friend threw syrup at me in High School. I thought it was his friend (I just kind of saw him laughing and it was from that general direction) so I beat his friend within an inch of his life. Later on, after we started being best friends in college he told me he was the bully who used to throw things at me. I laughed and said I felt bad for his friend. He told me that friend was now his sister's husband and he was a huge asshole. We both had a good laugh about that. This is a 100% true story and proof that the universe is just a bad screenwriter.

The “bend and snap” scene might seem “cringey”, but to me as silly as it is, it touches on one of the main appeals of this film - women supporting women. In so many films, women put each other down or are pitted against each other, or feel like they have to be different from or better than other women. This movie is *all* about women supporting each other and lifting each other up. The romance with Emmett is there, and there’s the initial set-up of Elle and Vivian competing over Warner, but the Emmett romance is more background, and ultimately Vivian and Elle realize how pointless it is competing over this guy and become friends instead. It’s the female professor who lifts Elle up and encourages her at her lowest moment, and Elle constantly encourages the women around her. To me, the “bend and snap” scene is just about all these women coming together and encouraging each other in a goofy, fun way, and just having a good time together.

I don't know if I'd say Elle is killing them with kindness (she did have a few zingers back at people) it's more that she has a tough enough skin to stay true to herself and isn't malleable to be pushed into the box everyone wants her to be in. In real life most of us don't have a thick enough skin for that and we tone ourselves down to conform. But Elle was able to surround herself with people who would be supportive of her the way she is (her sorority sisters, Paulette, Emmett) and kept plugging along, others be damned.

I definitely did find out that the "kindness" approach does work in high school. But it takes time and brains. I did not turn around any buIy when they were attacking me - but at 15/16yo i started reading Dale Carnegie and similar stuff and man, that worked...!!! every kid in my class, including the bullies, meIted during that year bcs i was always just being a good listener. i made everyone talk about their passion - make up, sports, games... and i made big eyes at them and "Confirmed Emotions"... "Wooow, you must have been scared! Wow, you must have been excited!" - this works with 99% of people. Everyone wants to talk about themselves. The downside was, i didnt have any real friends. I had some people who would sit with me, hang out with me during recess, so i was safe from sticking out and being an easy target for mean kids... the mean kids didnt befriend me, but when they acknowledge me, it was only to talk, bcs they knew i would be super understanding and agreeing......But nobody in school knew or cared what my personaI life was like and i didnt expect them to care. Still, at that time, i needed safety, and this worked. It also works with grownups, but i dont feel the need to try that hard anymore :)

Somehow, this movie managed to elude me for a long time. I only finally saw it last year. I did enjoy it, but it's certainly not my favorite movie of all time. What I actually liked about it most was that it didn't draw out the drama when Vivian saw Callaghan hitting on Elle and misunderstood the situation. She was seriously making an effort to be Elle's friend, and when she found out the truth, she was quick to admit her mistake. It could easily have done what I thought it would do and make Vivian spiteful and jealous and turn her into another "villain" for Elle. It was refreshing to see her make a turnaround and try to become friends instead. I didn't expect it.

I've seen a few lawyers say that they love this movie because it shows that law school isn't only for guys who brag about how genius they are and that women don't (or shouldn't) have to give up the styles and things they like to be taken seriously. It's also more about women supporting each other instead of winning a man. The love interest doesn't even matter that much at the end.

To help George out with the genre of this movie, it's not a Parady, but it's definitely a comedy. As Simone said, it plays with troupes and rom-com clichés, but it also subverts them too! When George made the Mean Girls reference it reminded me how much the movie really does flip this. Elle is a kind and loyal friend, where as the preppy nerdy kids are not (Although "New England Old Money kids" might be their own cliché; being exclusive and mean idk). But the linchpin of the whole movie is that Elle is NOT a dumb blonde. She is really smart when it comes to the things she knows, she's just been steered in a particular direction her whole life because of how she looks, so her interests are pretty conventionally "appropriate" to her appearance. But when she takes an interest in something new, like law, she ALSO succeeds in this. She's always been smart and driven!

I've been bullied in grade school for straight up 3 years because of my funny last name. Since kids aren't really that intelligent before they will make fun of everything. I think that bullying greatly affected my confidence. Now that I am smarter than any of them, I realized that they're beneath me and I will not gonna stoop down on their level. I also realized that whatever you do whether it's good or bad, people will still judge you so I started ignoring those people and focusing on my self. Legally blonde, still such a strong and funny movie with a feminist message all these years later so im glad to see a reaction for it! That being said, i rlly disagree with the idea that elle wouldnt thrive in a cynical world or that the message was “kill them with kindness”. That implies that theres an expectant turnaround for that kind behavior and elle isnt acting like this for other ppls approval or cause she doesnt know any better. The moral of the movie is more, imo, being yourself and NEVER let anyones ignorant opinion change you. Just because elle likes pink and is hyper feminine, that doesnt make her less intelligent and worthy of respect. Just cause other ppl decide to look down on it, shes expected to change her interests, personality and who she is? No, absolutely not! And it takes a LOT of strength to keep doing that! Elle REFUSES to let the world turn her cruel, because thats not who she is, and those are exactly the kind of ppl we need in a harsh cynical world. The ones who still CHOOSE kindness but also take no shit. Shes not acting kind out of naivety of the world, shes fully aware the world is mean to her, shes just not going to let that nonsense change her.

I figured a different "kindness" technique in high school. If a bully came at me I'd immediately make a positive scene asking him if he was already planning to go to some party I'd heard of (then I'd point out that there will be a keg or the parents will be gone or something like that.) Seems most bullies wouldn't likely hit me when I'm clearly inviting them to party in front of a crowd of people that would hate him if he responded to something like that. Worked 99% of the time!

Actually, it’s not just “we decided” on fashion issues. It’s the result of years of cultural responses, inferrences based on historical associations, etc. The author of “dress for success” was a psychologist who did years of studies on the subconscious associations people have to clothing choices (and researching where, historically, they come from).

Starting to be myself didn't stop the bullying I experienced. For that to happen, I had to make a stand againt the bullies, which was unpleasant, to say the least. It did, however, finally lead to finding people who accepted me for who I was. So it was worth it!

Yes, many women absolutely binge sweets when depressed! For me, it used to be things readily around, like a bag of chocolate chips, and if I was lucky, there would be cream cheese and cherries to microwave and stir together with the chocolate.

Good guy vs bad guy doesn't exist in the real world. EVERYONE is bad sometimes, everyone is good sometimes. You actually can change the buIIies with kindness - but you have to be SMART about it. you have to understand what they care about. What part of their ego they need to be flattered,coddIed, heaIed - and you have to show them the kindness in a real way,not manipuIative. People did change mean approach to me, when i started asking questions about what THEY like, about what THEY really care about. It's not just kindness it's also wisdom. For more on this - watch the show TedLasso - a show about kiIIIing ppI with kindness...and about how it's not always easy but how it can work

In the 90s there was a class action suit against Stairmaster because it was making women's butts get bigger, lol. Elle *always* takes the high road. Plenty of times she could have thrown people under the bus and she won't. Even in the costume when Warner asks why she's in costume and she didn't say that Vivian tricked her.

It was a good question from George about the Clothing choice of "Black and White" clothes/ attire. While it's challenging to pinpoint an exact moment , there are a few keymoments that have contributed to this new sort of fashion: Id reckon it started with Queen Victoria, who was quite fashionable for the time, adopted the customery black mourning attire after her husband died for days or weeks after - during this point it became very prominent in the courts and utilizing Stark black clothes for their formal appearance. Adding to this point, the 2 world world wars, so close together made access to certain materials and dyes were impractical and considered non-important. During this time, resources were scarce, and there was a need for practicality and austerity - not to be seen as wasteful. The somber atmosphere of the war years carried over into the post-war period, leading to a continued preference for more restrained and understated formal attire. And the Suit as we know it today took inspiration from the the earlier Victorian Era and grew from the formal military uniforms. The tailoring and structure of the silhouette that was formed was seen as a Symbol of Masculinity and Power. Sorry for the long one, but hope that answers it :)

I don't think bullies are capable of responding to being nice unless they are suddenly the one being bullied. I do think kindness attracts other kind people. When the kind people do find each other, they're smart enough to see that in each other and let each other be who they naturally are without judgement.

15:20 - lawyers' dress code comes from medieval England. This is why black and white was chosen: "The Black color was chosen because of two reasons. Firstly, colors and dyes were not readily available back then. Purple signified royalty and thus, the only abundant fabric color left was black. However, the main reason behind wearing a 'Black Coat' is because black is the color of authority and power. Black represents submission of oneself. Just like Priests wear Black to show their submission to God, Lawyers wear black to show their submission to Justice. The color white signifies light, goodness."

I figured out I got bullied because when in school for example. People would hang out with me after school because I wouldn't bully. And the bully's got jealous. Having power over people isn't more important than having friends.

I'm the most easy going peaceful old hippy you may ever meet, but I beat the crap out of bullies from primary school to grammar school and even at university. That will give you the respect you deserve. Don't know what else will at that age. ;) I wasn't even in any fight classes, but working on my granddad's farm gave me the strength and resilience to take on bullies, because most are just big cowards at heart. All I needed at one point was to take off my glasses and it was go time and they usually just ran, hiding in the toilets, lol. Ever since I got my rep to keep me from violence.
