Jeremy's book, now out: theablesbook.com
Thursday: sins of a sad entry in a sad franchise.

He actually doesn't. At least not right away. When Dana is screaming "What is happening?" you can still see the car in the background. You can even see someone in it looking out the window, obviously looking at what is going on.

The neighborhood was built on top of a graveyard where the headstones only were moved. Carol Ann was born in the house making the tie-in to the land. As for why it took 5 years for the spirits to act--I always thought that it was the burial of the bird and the disturbance of the bird's grave by the pool construction that sparked the Poltergeist activity.
@WilAdams
@WilAdams 7 жыл бұрын
You must have missed the boss saying 'This is NOT an ancient burial ground'. Instead, it was just a plain graveyard where the company paid only to move the headstones. They left the bodies buried. But you are correct to point out that it is ONLY this house.
@robertyeah2259
@robertyeah2259 7 жыл бұрын
No, the house being the only affected one is not a correct point. It states specifically in the movie that poltergeists haunt *people* and not *places*, it targeted the Freelings specifically for a reason, which in the sequels is that Diane and Carol Anne are clairvoyant.

Fun fact: the awkward jump cut between the scene where Diane is talking about the feeling of the ghost pulling her was done that way because Steve made a comment about how he doesn't even like Pizza Hut. Pizza Hut got mad so they panicked and cut the scene

Some of the earlier remote controls were radio based (instead of IR), so this actually happened. However, the remote the guy uses is a Zenith sonic remote - which worked by pitched clicking sounds, and thus wouldn't trigger a television in the next house. At the same time, with some effort, you could turn the TV off and on, and with some finesse, even change channels, by snapping your fingers. - The more ya know...

So what was with the 'red slime' ( with some chunky pieces ) that the tennis balls, the mother and Carol-Anne is covered with when they come back to this world? Is the Heavenly afterlife a world of slimey pasta sauce or something, and not the fluffy clouds and pearly gates that we've always imagined it to be? Strange that no one says anything about it in the movie.

It always made sense to me in some way. I'm of the belief that the idea of "oneness" in many spiritual teachings implies how deeply connected to physical matter we are. If there's truly no separation, then it makes sense that transitions between ? what? Worlds? Whatever, must have some aspect of dense physical material. Just a thought on it.

Even worse. Her murderer got a slap on the wrist because the judge was a raging misogynist that wouldn't allow any testimony from women because he believed they were too emotional for court proceedings. He got so much flak that he resigned and went on... to be a juvenile court judge. Meanwhile Dominque's murderer changed his name to avoid being associated with the whole strangling a woman to death and became gainfully employed as a chef at some of the country's finest restaurants. Those two assholes deserve a poltergeist more for their actions than the whole living on top of graves thing. Sorry for the necropost (heh).

Both actresses are buried at Westwood Memorial Park. They’re literally just feet away from each other. Heather O’Rourke is in a tomb on a wall. Dominique Dunne is interred in the ground. That is so peculiar. It’s a pretty small cemetery hidden away behind a building. There’s a lot of celebrities buried there: Rodney Dangerfield, Dean Martin, Hugh Hefner, Kirk Douglas, Natalie Wood, Eve Arden, Florence Henderson, Jack Lemon, Farrah Fawcett, and a little known actress named Marilyn Monroe.

Hence the term "clicker". So since they did not work off of infrared like most remotes do now, it is plausible it could work from one house to another.

The reason only the Freelings' house was affected is because the evil spirit (appearing as a monster in one scene, a skeletal monster in another, and a 19th century elderly man in the sequels) is obsessed with Carol-Anne (RIP Heather O'Roarke, taken too soon). But if you watch the second movie, the entire neighborhood has been taken over by Tangina and her paranormal research team.

They didn’t explain this until the 2nd movie which far less people saw but one of the reasons it was that house specifically was because in between the first and second movie they dug a while under the swimming pool and found this big cavern where reverend Kane locked tons of people down below. The book for the 2nd film was even better because they explained all this as well as the neighbors pretty much abandoning the neighborhood

The "stacking chairs" shot is one of the more remarkable shots in movie history because it's a single take, and the chairs were stacked by crew who ran into the set while the table was off-camera and stacked those chairs like that in real time. To me, that's a neat trick even without having to stay off camera.

I have a theory about the psychic lady: (contains spoilers) She can only detect good spirits, and she cannot directly sense the bad spirits. She can sense when the good spirits are being lead astray, which leads her to believe that she can actually sense bad spirits directly. When she said that the house is clean; to the best of her knowledge, it was! This is because the good spirits realized that the demon lost it's power over them and they were freed, so she could no longer detect anything. I think the demon existed in the house long before the good spirits could be detected, and that building the house over the cemetery is what summoned the demon and trapped the spirits. With the demon summoned, it silently manipulated the family into building the pool, which would eventually unlock the spirits trapped by the house and allow the demon to move to its next phase of the plan. The demon needed to sacrifice Carol-Anne to unleash it's full potential, and the other spirits were probably fed some bullshit about how it's "her time" and what not. With the power of the demon and the spirits combined, she was successfully taken to the other side. Once she had crossed over it may have been too late even if they knew, because the demon was now very powerful. The good spirits could not escape it and they summoned help from the psychic. When Carol-Anne was taken back, and the spirits were released from the house, because the demon lost the power to control them. This caused the psychic lady to believe that the demon was gone too, but it hadn't. The demon was now thoroughly pissed off that its entire plan had been ruined, and attempted to drag anyone still left in the house into hell. It failed because everyone now knew what it was doing, and it had also been severely weakened by the loss of Carol-Anne. The entire house got sucked in to hell, but everybody got out, because the demon simply didn't have the power to stop them!

Possibly true. However, towards the end of the movie when the portal manifests in the kids' bedroom closet, it's probably a safe bet to think that, unlike the previous time, it probably would not only have pulled Carol Anne into Hell, it probably would have killed her if the tentacle had managed to grab her, or anyone else, for that matter (after dragging them into Hell, of course). In hindsight, why didn't Steven throw Tigue's ass into that thing? He was the one who actually desecrated the burial ground!

According to the documentary about, "Poltergeist", the bones used in the movie were real bones of people who died in Indonesia (I believe Indonesia). Apparently, it was cheaper than creating skeletons for the movie. None of the actors knew about the bones and were later ticked off to find that out. Heather actually innocently played with the skeletons. As for Dominique Dunne, well, she had an abusive and jealous boyfriend who killed her.

But the plot is different, so it's more like a new incarnation than a remake of Batman and Robin, Forever and Begins.

Remember to PASS (Pull, Aim, Squeeze & Sweep). Also, I have the funniest story: I live in Toronto, and have lived here my whole life, so I was definitely affected by the winter rainstorm in Xmas 2013. Around the time we finally got power reinstated (6 days after it went out) I was cooking Kraft Dinner and was scared of burning myself by simply holding the HANDLE of the pot I was using, so I was wearing oven mitts. Somehow, they lit on fire! Luckily, my dad's a firefighter and me, my mom and brothers were yelling for him to run to the other side of the house, so here he comes in his underwear! On top of that, both my parents ripped the mitts outta my hands and ran outside to the backyard and shoved them into the snow like Harry's hat catching on fire in _Home Alone._ Now, bc of that hilarious incident, I bought a fire extinguisher from Lowe's about a year or so ago, and it's been sitting underneath the kitchen sink ever since. AND, if that's not enough, last school year in my biology class, I brought up the PASS acronym (I learned it from Howcast) and she didn't even know it lmao!!

I always figured that at the beginning of the haunting it was the most 'peaceful' ghosts playing with Carol Ann and trying to get help, because she's the only psychic one in the neighborhood and young enough to take things as-is. But the evil entity is what was responsible for everything else that escalates.

It wasn't built on a burial ground, it was on a regular cemetary
@FreezeNGraham
@FreezeNGraham 7 жыл бұрын
It was a normal, modern cemetery built on top of a sealed cave/tomb of a cult of people that traveled west to start a utopian society. Kane (AKA) the demon, was the leader of cult and he convinced them all to seal themselves in by telling them the end of the world was coming. When the world didn't end he wouldn't let them leave. The reason it affected the Freelings house is because the Cult was sealed in a cave directly below the their house. Carol Anne was Clairvoyant and all of the spirits gravitated to her soul because of her gift. The book is available on Ebay and amazon and explains the whole story in much better detail than the movie.

The movie that Steven and Diane are watching in their bedroom is A Guy Named Joe, story about military pilot who comes back from the dead. Not only that, but 9 years later in 1991, Spilberg remade it into Always.
