Did you know Daniel Radcliffe was in movies other than Harry Potter? Well, a couple, at least. Here we find him in another modern horror film that is just a little too fond of jump-scares. Let the sin count begin!
Thursday, to kick off your new year... more sins!
Remember, no movie is without sin. Which movie's sins do YOU want to see recounted?

+ladycplum Yeah, I didn't notice it at first, but this movie is like a warped version of Harry Potters' life. It's got all most of the details too: trains, the two sidekicks, one being a sort of incredulous character and the other being the knowledgeable one, the walking around in a dark old big place that's haunted and weird shit happens whilst still being remarkably accommodating, the people that hate the lead for no reason but that know him on sight purely by reputation (maybe a stretch, but I went for it), etc, and even in the story line, like you said, there's a lot of parallels. I still liked it tho, it isn't *that* bad, it's a good old fashioned ghost story...

Max Sidhu That's kind of scary and interesting at the same time. There's a lake here in the US and it's so cold and deep and thought to have hundreds of bodies in it and they have said they would probably be preserved because of the cold. So now I'm afraid to swim in any lake.

CyborgFox0 Yeah, it's a pretty successful book-turned-stage play-turned movie produced by Hammer (who made some legendary and notorious British horror in the 60s and 70s and had their own Hammer House Of Horror show on TV during that time). I didn't find the film scary though either. The play's supposed to be much better, the woman in black sneaks around the audience grabbing and screaming at random audience members.

Dear Cinema Sins, The reason why the Woman in Black i.e. Jennet is haunting the rest of the village because when her child was drowning in quicksand, none of the villagers lifted a finger to help Jennet look for her son in the marsh because they looked down on the fact that Jennet was a single mother who gave her child up for adoption to her sister, and was trying to steal her child back. I hope that clarifies your question.
@gauribabu8319
@gauribabu8319 9 жыл бұрын
Hey,just wanted to ask a few things,you seem like you'd know more about the storyline :) Firstly,did Jennet have her child after marriage or without marriage at all? if its the second one,then I can see partly why the townsfolk would look down on her,simply because that was considered bad in that time period.Secondly, Jennet hated the people because they didn't help her search for her child,and even though she was essentially stealing/kidnapping her own child to have it back,I can understand her resentment.Yet, Daniel's character ended up finding her child's body and bringing it to the mansion-why in the end did Jennet kill his son,and indirectly himself in front of the train?
@WallyHandford
@WallyHandford 9 жыл бұрын
+Gauri Babu From what I recall from the play I watched in London, Jennet had the child without marriage. And I think (I could be wrong haha) the reason why she killed Daniel's character and the child is because she has already accumulated so much anger as a spirit, that the grudge she holds on the villagers can never be assuaged. I do think it's super unfair how she killed off the lawyer and his child but I guess a ghost with so much hate can't be expected to be reasonable. Hope that helps answer your questions! :)
@gauribabu8319
@gauribabu8319 9 жыл бұрын

Arlie Daniel I love historical films. I HATE jump shots when this film oculd have been edited to be a really horrific thriller. Instead, I just sat there, ticked off at every burst of loud music meant to scare me. Startling me is not the same thing. Also, I hated how everyone had perfect costumes- except for the hats! NO one in 1900 would ever go outside without a hat- really! As a historical costumer it was really annoying to see.

The show was great until third season, and despite some great characters like Lex Luthor or Major Zod, after the third season the show became all messed and the final episode was a HUGE SHIT! 10 years waiting to see Tom Welling wearing the damn supersuit and all we got was a CGI Superman. I still love the way they ended this movie. To those who don't understand- The woman in black killed both him and his son to thank him for reuniting her with her son. The only reason Daniels' character hadn't killed himself as soon as his wife passed, was because he refused to abandon his son. So, the woman helped him by killing both of them at the same time so he wouldn't have to see his son suffer, and he could finally have his family back

predetor911 She turned into a vengeful spirit, and she vowed to never forgive the towns folk. So she punished them by killing their own children. +Futurama Llama I actually took the ending much differently, though came to a similar conclusion I guess. I don't think The Woman In Black was anywhere near that benevolent. She killed Arthur's son to spite him, and then let them go because Arthur would do anything for his son and family, even die for them. Kipps trying to reunite The Woman in Black with her son clearly didn't seem to do anything beneficial for him or the town, there is the whole shot of the hallway after everything is said and done of her chanting and then shouting "NEVER FORGIVE!" not to mention her kind of trying to scare Kipps and his friend to death during the whole reunion process. If anything it seemed to piss her off more, because she thought somehow that Kipps thought she was wrong for wanting revenge (which she probably kind of was; even she was a more tragic character, her retribution is pretty freaking disproportionate) and was just trying to make her go away and dismiss her like her sister and everyone else had, in her mind, not because he genuinely wanted to help her and her son and the town (and make her go away), and she goes and targets him specifically, to make him suffer for trying to interfere by killing his son. However, Kipps to continues to be loving and self-sacrificing and incredibly badass and tries to rescue his son, and dies for him, which finally drives it home for Jennett that Arthur will do anything for his family and others and finally earns him some amount of respect from her, along with Kipp's wife being there and serving as a kind of guardian angel for her family, also preventing Jennett from keeping Kipps' son enthralled and from the afterlife, like she did to every other child she had killed. His wife was kind of foreshadowed as a guardian angel, I like to imagine her being completely awesome too, like "not my family. Not this time. They are coming with me," perhaps with one liberal use of the word "bitch" in there.

***** She kills the children to punish their parents. The main character is new to the town, and had nothing to do with what happened to her son. The second time I watched it, I noticed that she never truly tried to kill him. He was disturbing her home, and she constantly just scared him. To me, it seemed that she was simply trying to get him to leave

The story is supposed to be set in the Edwardian Era, so that's 1901 at the earliest and 1910 at the latest. Your estimate based on the clothing is definitely in the right time-period. The cars seen in the film are anachronistic, though, dating from 1912 (a Fiat Tipo 1 taxi seen in a street shot) and 1913 (the Rolls-Royce Silver Ghost that they drive around in). It's fair to say (as Greta M did) that the director really didn't give a damn about anachronisms. A case of as long as it looks like something from ghost-story-times, it'll do :-/

Number one sin of this movie: how the hell did Alice Drablow manage to live out her days, alone, in the house that her sister's vengeful ghost haunts? How was she not driven to madness -- or at least driven out of the house -- by Jennet's ghost? At one point we see notes that Alice has written saying stuff like, "Get thee to hell, evil harlot...she will never stop...she will never leave me in peace." WHY THE HELL DIDN'T SHE MOVE SOMEWHERE ELSE?

+TokyoQueen It's honestly amazing, possibly one of the greatest books I've ever read. But its slow paced (for tension) and its written in Victorian style, so its not for everyone. You should give it a go, though :)

The second I heard that little girls voice literally the first thing that popped into my head was the "look mummy, there's an airplane up in the sky". When the actual "sins" part of the episode was over and the hilarious audio replacement stuff started, I was shocked to hear that clip. It's incredibly obscure, and I bet if you asked people on the street, 9/10 of them would have absolutely no idea where it came from. Even if they'd heard the album a dozen times before, it's not really super memorable. Hell, it's not even on par with "IF YEH DONT EAT..." as far as a take away memory. I don't know. It just made me an even bigger fan of your show, and I already LOVED it, so you know, keep doing what you're doing. It's fucking awesome!

also another sin I would like to add is that you cant have the dog just randomly disappear half way through the movie for no reason like we wouldn't notice. the dog just decides that Daniel can just deal with this shit by himself.

@JakkFrost1
@JakkFrost1 8 жыл бұрын
I watched 'The Exorcist' when I was 6 or 7 years old, and this was 35 years ago, when it just came out and was actually scary. I haven't had any reaction to a horror movie ever since then. However I _did_ have a physical reaction to Cronenberg's 'The Naked Lunch', puked my guts out within 12 hours both times I watched it. And it's not like it was all that scary or gross, but it did seem like maybe there was something fundamentally wrong with the movie that my subconscious reacted badly to. Kind of like when horror writers use that old copout of "the human mind would go mad if it could perceive the entity's true form, so our hero only sees something he can actually comprehend, like a clown or a spider."

Same. I read the book first, because I was writing a paper on it, but I was still scared by the play. So stripped down and basic, and yet I needed a shot afterwards. But it was St. Patrick's Day, so I had a good cover.

RubyLovesRocket lol. I didn't know there is a book as well - though a lot of plays get published as books. Sadly, on school trips, you're not allowed to drink alcohol - but what was even worse was the bunch of scaredy-cat-girls behind me, who would start screaming anytime something scary would happen - so they almost screamed non-stop.
@AdirondackRuby
@AdirondackRuby 9 жыл бұрын
I was in the balcony, but there were some teenagers up in the front rows who were screaming a lot too. Not sure, but I think the book came first and then the play. But either way, it's worth a read. Very short and quick.
