If Walt Disney Pictures had done an animated Titanic movie (probably based it on the 1997 Broadway musical - which is unreleated to the $1.8 billion award-winning film by James Cameron, also released in 1997) during the Renaissance period, it would at least be more respectable to history.

I stand by the fact that the best piece of Diana media to come out in the past few years is Pablo Larrain’s Spencer. Not only does it feature the best performance of Kristen Stewart’s career, it also functions as a sort of “what if?” story that gives Diana a happy, albeit bittersweet, ending that never feels disrespectful to her legacy

After you're done with the Worst Picture winners, I'd love to see you tackle "Wired," the John Belushi biopic based on the Bob Woodward book. It's honestly weird how not a lot of online reviewers have talked about it, the only notable one I can think of is The Cinema Snob, especially given how infamously bad it was, the controversy behind it and the book with Belushi's family and friends and how it almost killed Michael Chiklis' career... that and the fact that it's never gotten a DVD or Blu-Ray release, which is not a good sign.

Besides the overemphasis on John’s drug usage, its fantasy elements (like John playing pinball with his Puerto Rican guardian angel to try to get back to life) just don’t work. We've kind of come full circle with this series, because based on these clips, DIANA reminds me a lot of CAN'T STOP THE MUSIC. Too campy for mainstream audiences, not *nearly* campy enough for camp connoisseurs. There's a very interesting book called NOT SINCE CARRIE about legendary Broadway flops, including the infamous stage musical adaptation of Stephen King's book (which has gotten something of a critical reappraisal in recent years, though with several changes from what crash-landed on Broadway in 1988). The one I really want to see is VIA GALACTICA, a sci-fi musical from the early seventies which simulated weightlessness by having actors jump up and down on trampolines.

Regarding your point about the musical referencing ‘80’s rock music, didn’t Diana have a strong friendship with Elton John for a while? They had a brief period where they didn’t talk for a while, but apparently reconciled right before Diana’s death. He even re-recorded Candle In The Wind to be about her, and it became one of his biggest hits. THAT could’ve been something to include! Though, speaking of Candle In The Wind, your next review being a movie about that song’s original subject is going to be… interesting to see.
@jamesatkinsonja8 ай бұрын
Candle in the Wind is the second highest selling song of all time, only beaten by Bing Crosby's White Christmas.
@heymistercarter.8 ай бұрын
@@jamesatkinsonja right? And the fact that it was the version that he recorded in tribute to Diana that sold so well should've been something to include! They probably couldn't get the rights to use the actual song (and part of me wonders if Sir Elton even knows this musical exists), but at least some reference to their friendship would make sense. Especially for a musical that points Diana's love of '80's era rock out.

Next up, Blonde. One of the more interesting movies in the Razzies' catalogue, for a number of different reasons: It's Netflix's first NC-17-rated movie, it's the second NC-17-rated movie in the Razzies' existence to win worst picture 27 years after the previous winner Showgirls, it's a movie that initially had a lot of oscar buzz around it and it ended up walking away with one oscar nomination, best actress for Ana de Armas (Which personally, I don't know if it was warranted, I mean, I think she did fine but I'm not sure if it was really worthy of a best actress oscar nomination, but I digress). Even it ultimately winning worst picture I find a bit perplexing, I'm not saying it was a good movie, I thought it was boring, pretentious and unpleasant, but out of the movies that came out in 2022, I was left thinking "Really? That one won, huh?", and I was personally hoping Morbius would win, but that's just me.

Even if this isn’t the worst picture of 2021, I can see why it “won.” Were the people behind this trying to condemn the paparazzi? Because they focused almost exclusively on Diana’s marital problems just like the press did. It’s also more than a little tasteless to make an entire musical about Diana when she spent most of her life trying to get away from all the media attention. Not to mention they took a strong, kindhearted, and ambitious woman and depicted her as vengeful and weak. They should’ve derived from Disney’s Cinderella. That’s an example of this kind of storyline done right.

I remember when Diana died, there was a sketch on The Daily Show where it showed footage of her meeting Mother Theresa and it was saying how we lost a kind, loving, charitable woman, and the punchline was, "Oh, and also an old Nun from India died." The thing is, if you look at both of their lives, Diana was a much better person. She actually tried to alleviate suffering instead of reveling in it. She didn't basically steal from people when she raised money. Had she won the Nobel Peace Prize, she wouldn't have said that we should end all abortions before trying to end war. I don't care whether you're pro-choice or pro-life, there's no reason, if you want to end abortion, that we shouldn't try to end both. I personally want legal safe abortions as an option for anyone who wants one, but if you're not in favor of that, I don't see why you wouldn't want to end war as well.

Sadly, regardless of her own personality and achievements, Diana was a victim of the Establishment that she was born into. Charles was getting on and while Camilla was more his age and from the same class, Diana was ideal for child-bearing. People should really understand that in the royal family, there is very little agency. Sure ... you're a princess (or a prince) but you're in a job that has rules. Check out the bulk of the Rogers and Hammerstein collection of musical films and you'll find that mixing camp with pathos can be done. A whole lot of heartache could've been saved if someone had just gone up to the two writers at the pitch stage and said "No, this is a terrible idea that's never going to work." Apart from the fact that having THE MODERN-DAY ROYAL FAMILY bursting into song whenever they needed to emote was always going to be jarring as hell, you can't trivialise such weighty subjects as suicide attempts, eating disorders and messy Royal divorces through song-and-dance numbers. This meant they could never go full-on comedy with the material - but at the same time, if they kept the music in a tone sensitive to the subject matter it would've been dark and depressing as hell and nobody would want to watch it. Even trying to dance back and forth between the two extremes was never going to work either, because the whiplash would be too intense - and if you tried to delicately tread the thin line between the two you'd just end up with something bland and soulless. You absolutely CAN make a musical that swings between high, bawdy comedy and deep tragedy - 'Les Miserables' and 'Blood Brothers' do it excellently, but that's because they deal with *fictional* characters, albeit in a real world setting and/or period of history. You can't do it with real-life famous people that everyone knows about and who are still very visible in the media, without it feeling like either a very lame and tone-deaf parody (at best) or a spiteful and unempathetic roast of some very troubled people (at worst.)

When the Diana musical was first announced, I immediately thought to myself "Why would you ever make a musical about Diana?"

The press photographers put me in mind of Kate Bush's dancers in the Them Heavy People promo, though not as good.

The Diana costume designer (William Ivey Long) also has several sexual abuse allegations against him and yet keeps getting hired on Broadway. You’re welcome.

Lady Diana was the People's Princess and truly gone too soon. It's bullcrap that this is part of her legacy now but at least we have the Spencer Movie to make up for it

When the Kristen Stewart starring Diana movie is considered "the good one", that's when you know that your musical sucks.

Gonna disagree with "Superhero world where the only people with superpowers are sociopaths" is an interesting premise. Mainly because unless you're like literally DC or Marvel that feels more common than just playing superheroes straight.

Plus, it's not compelling or interesting anymore. I feel like superhero deconstruction is overdone at this point.

Diann will be remembered a lot more than this Musical.

Honestly, while this movie wasn’t good, it’s impressive that they put this together in the wake of the pandemic. Next year we’re finally finished with this project, with a movie I personally consider the worst of 2022.

Something regarding Hamilton's stage recording-turned-film: my mom is a massive fan of the show and has always wanted to see it ever since 2016 (I got the chance to see it in person with my uncle and two cousins when it had its first National Tour stop in Los Angeles), so when it had its release in 2020, she watched it a total of three times and it's now one of her go-to Fourth of July films next to Independence Day, 1776, and The Patriot. I don't think she's heard of Diana: The Musical, but chances are that she would not enjoy it.

Fun fact: Diana once playfully broke a (fake) glass bottle over Charles’ head. In other words, she… crowned a future king 😎

No...Octavia Spencer's performance wasn't lackluster, she HAD to be the straight man because Sookie(still her Gilmore Girls role to me) stays over the top! The worst thing about Thunder Force is that it kept me from eating my favorite seafood for the next 2 years!!!!!

You should cover Dungeons & Dragons: The Book of Vile Darkness. It’s not good, but it’s at least better than the first two movies.

I wouldn't have minded a biopic of Princess Diana. But why the hell did they make it a musical?

If anyone wants a more in-depth look at this musical I highly recommend Scott Cameron’s video. He really dissects how other musicals succeeded with certain storytelling elements where this one failed. I won’t spoil the entire video, but I will say that he pitched some ideas that sounded much better than the final product.
