Tom Green has confirmed in an interview with Joe Rogan that the whole point of the movie was meant to be polarizing. The entire joke of FGF was that 50% of people hate it more than anything they’ve ever seen, and the other 50% would find it hilarious, and yes, there are people who find this funny. So...in essence, it’s tom making a giant ass out of himself on camera and seeing how we’d react to it.

The fundamental issue with Tom Green was that he was overexposed around this time. He was at the end of the day a "niche comedian" during a time in which Hollywood was seeking for youth-appealing performers. If Tom Green was starting out today, he would in all likelihood, gain his following on KZfaq instead of on MTV.

Roger Ebert gave the film a rare zero-star rating, listed it as one of his most hated films of all time, and described the film thus: "This movie doesn't scrape the bottom of the barrel. This movie isn't the bottom of the barrel. This movie isn't below the bottom of the barrel. This movie doesn't deserve to be mentioned in the same sentence with barrels[...]. The day may come when Freddy Got Fingered is seen as a milestone of neo-surrealism. The day may never come when it is seen as funny

The main issue with this film isn't a case of is it funny or not or was it a gotcha moment by Green to the studio; it is that at the end of it all it is an extremely unpleasant and, somehow, boring film. It goes so hard at trying to be subversive and postmodern that, once the audience has that set as the bar for what they're watching, it becomes very apparent that that's ALL it does. Couple that with some of the more explicitly juvenile and stupid jokes, for all that people argue about Green secretly being a genius it's still a complete tonal mess with all the comedic depth of a puddle

Roger Ebert’s review is hilarious. The story of Green attending the Razzie’s is priceless. And the movie still becomes the subject of weird news stories. I remember reading a story of a guy who had a Blockbuster rental copy of “Freddy Got Fingered” for 15 years before he had to return it.

This is one of my favorite movies. The movie itself is a mockery of formulaic film dramas. It's as if someone gave Tom Green the 'movie formula' and said here's how you make a film and tell a story, and Tom took that formula and said "cool, let me add some insane characters to this formula and watch how they would fit into it". I don't think this movie was intended to be watched as a serious film drama, but rather is a mockery of one. I think a lot of people and film critics missed this point of the movie. Watching the pure absurdity and insanity play out is a lot of fun. I'm glad this film got made.
@C.V317
@C.V317 3 жыл бұрын
Where did you pull this concept from? Because from what I’ve seen, the producers thought they could get money off his schtick, Tom thought it would sell (granted, he didn’t make it to be a great movie, just his sort of movie), and the cast all admit they wanted a paycheck. People cannot miss a point of you are plucking out of thin air. Un Chien Andalou, this ain’t; it’s a flop that people make excuses for to justify why they may like it.

@@BaranoffIsaac wait wait wait, so Tom Green wants to say “f@!* you” to producers who want a movie with a standard movie format by...breaking out his well-worn copy of Anémic Cinéma for inspiration? I honestly doubt Tom Green could spell avant-garde, much less be determined to sell it to producers who would not be inclined to accept it. This isn’t high art, it’s a one-man version of Jackass. Look, I’m not saying it’s bad to like the movie; you’re allowed to like anything you want. But when someone throws a rock at someone else’s window out of spite, it doesn’t make sense to say “well it must’ve slipped” or “don’t you see, the rock is an avant-garde statement”.

I agree with RedLetterMedia's interpretation that the film is actually a parody of those "heartwarming/gross-out" comedies that were all the rage in the late-90s, early-00s; and more or a giant troll by Tom Green against the producers.

Yes but it gets a bit too self indulgent at times.Tom Green cannot stop himself from acting like he's smarter than he really is. @troyschulz2318
@troyschulz2318 3 жыл бұрын
@@florinivan6907 See, I think there IS some sort of deeper commentary buried in there somewhere (probably unintentionally), I just have no idea what it is, hell I don't think even Tom Green knows. And the movie as a whole is pretty terrible, but some parts of it are...well I wouldn't say FUNNY, but I do think they're at least more interesting than Sean gives it credit for. The running gag with the kid getting horribly injured, I think, is good (in theory) and could even be darkly hilarious in a better movie with a clearer vision beyond "shitpost". A strange comparison, but it reminds me of Lars Von Trier's THE HOUSE THAT JACK BUILT, in that it's a giant, capital-E Edgy shitpost that's the creator taking his own reputation and tropes and dialing them all the way up to 11 to create some kinda hypothetical worst case scenario freakshow version of those very things. Is it any good? No. But is it worthwhile talking about? I think so. I also I think it has historical significance as a snapshot of the kind of comedies that were popular in that late 90s/early 00s timeframe. Those sorts of movies just don't exist anymore, at least not on the mainstream, a-new-on-in-theatres-every-month level they were at their height. What you're watching is a parody of a kind of a trend that died almost twenty years ago. There is one joke I find genuinely funny, the entire "bag of jewels" exchange. I don't know why, but Tom Green repeatedly saying "bag of jewels" with a completely straight face while being drowned out by a helicopter is hilarious to me and I don't know why.
