Social workers are not psychiatrists, at least not at her level in the workforce. They are trained to positively reinforce/influence most clients, encourage them to better themselves and find help with family and friends, or enroll them with an actual psychiatrist. She probably already knew about his issues but not how to deal with it and was maybe shocked to see his issues seep into his jokes. Or I'm reading to much into this. You can even explain her 'they don't care about people like you and me,' as her saying he is the wrong client send to wrong social service, because the bureaucracy just assumes that if a mentally ill person gets help from someone the problem will go away. I see that whole scene as complete misfitting and defunding of modern day social services.

@Freerefill there's so many great "dark joke" scenes in this movie that are improvised by Joaquin. He truly embraced the character of the Joker, especially the legendary one in the BTAS. This scene, the scene where he locked himself in a fridge because he felt "sad"... it suited the BTAS Joker perfectly.

The stairs representing his mental state is a great detail about the movie. Throughout the first half of the movie, you only see him going up, as if wanting to get out of his depression and pain. Similarly, after he loses everything, you only see him going down. Once he finally becomes the Joker and embraces that persona, he celebrates his descent into madness.

"My mom died. I'm celebrating." That is one of the darkest jokes I've ever heard, and maybe I'm a horrible person, but it makes me laugh my ass off, every time I hear it. Really, when you think about it, if you take out the killings and recontextualize a couple of the scenes, Joker literally plays out like a dark comedy/satire. The brilliance needed to pull that kind of horror/humor off is rare, indeed.

The thing that makes Joker, Joker for me, and the thing that I felt this film nailed is that whether or not he’s really “insane” he’s undoubtedly free. Free from society’s expectations and free from his own insecurities and fears. But he also has no empathy for anyone (other than his friend whose life he spared and possibly Sophie). And freedom without empathy is just.. Chaos.

Societies are characterized by patterns of relationships (social relations) between individuals who share a distinctive culture and institutions; a given society may be described as the sum total of such relationships among its constituent of members. In the social sciences, a larger society often exhibits stratification or dominance patterns in subgroups. Societies construct patterns of behavior by deeming certain actions or speech as acceptable or unacceptable. These patterns of behavior within a given society are known as societal norms. Societies, and their norms, undergo gradual and perpetual changes. Insofar as it is collaborative, a society can enable its members to benefit in ways that would otherwise be difficult on an individual basis; both individual and social (common) benefits can thus be distinguished, or in many cases found to overlap. A society can also consist of like-minded people governed by their own norms and values within a dominant, larger society. This is sometimes referred to as a subculture, a term used extensively within criminology. More broadly, and especially within structuralist thought, a society may be illustrated as an economic, social, industrial or cultural infrastructure, made up of, yet distinct from, a varied collection of individuals. In this regard society can mean the objective relationships people have with the material world and with other people, rather than "other people" beyond the individual and their familiar social environment. The painting portrays servants, musicians, monks, children, guests, and hosts all in a single social environment. It serves as an in-depth look into the Chinese social structure of the time. The term "society" came from the Latin word societas, which in turn was derived from the noun socius ("comrade, friend, ally"; adjectival form socialis) used to describe a bond or interaction between parties that are friendly, or at least civil. Without an article, the term can refer to the entirety of humanity (also: "society in general", "society at large", etc.), although those who are unfriendly or uncivil to the remainder of society in this sense may be deemed to be "antisocial". However, the Scottish economist, Adam Smith taught instead that a society "may subsist among different men, as among different merchants, from a sense of its utility without any mutual love or affection, if only they refrain from doing injury to each other."[1] Used in the sense of an association, a society is a body of individuals outlined by the bounds of functional interdependence, possibly comprising characteristics such as national or cultural identity, social solidarity, language, or hierarchical structure. Conceptions[edit] Society, in general, addresses the fact that an individual has rather limited means as an autonomous unit. The great apes have always been more (Bonobo, Homo, Pan) or less (Gorilla, Pongo) social animals, so Robinson Crusoe-like situations are either fictions or unusual corner cases to the ubiquity of social context for humans, who fall between presocial and eusocial in the spectrum of animal ethology. Cultural relativism as a widespread approach or ethic has largely replaced notions of "primitive", better/worse, or "progress" in relation to cultures (including their material culture/technology and social organization). According to anthropologist Maurice Godelier, one critical novelty in society, in contrast to humanity's closest biological relatives (chimpanzees and bonobos), is the parental role assumed by the males, which supposedly would be absent in our nearest relatives for whom paternity is not generally determinable.[2][3] In political science[edit] Societies may also be structured politically. In order of increasing size and complexity, there are bands, tribes, chiefdoms, and state societies. These structures may have varying degrees of political power, depending on the cultural, geographical, and historical environments that these societies must contend with.

Watching the movie in theatre I didn’t think Sophie was real at all, just an illusion Arthur created in his mind to comfort himself in low times (when he was bombing at the comedy club, when he was with his mother at the hospital, etc). The scene when they showed she was real and the relationship was the illusion, how he just welcomed himself into her apartment, made me feel so uncomfortable (the way it was supposed to) and Arthur’s quiet “I had a bad day” was amazing. Honestly this was such a well directed film and the fact that Todd Phillips was even NOMINATED for it is amazing so congratulations to him. Also congratulations to Joaquin and Hildur for their nominations and wins, both were enormous contributing factors to why this movie is so fantastic

You touch on it a little here, but I can't emphasize enough the symbolic importance of staircases in this movie (and not just the famous one). Every time we see Arthur interact with a staircase in this film, it says something about him. The bottom of the stairs is the insanity of the Joker and how he actually sees the world deep down, descending them shows him moving closer to that breaking point. The final Wall Street guy he shot was killed at the bottom of a staircase before he forcibly dragged himself back away from that madness. He went up the stairs to confront Thomas Wayne in the bathroom at the theater, believing that the answers he'd find there would save him. After stealing his mother's medical records, he flees down the stairwell to read them as the truth he finds pushes him closer to the edge. Best use of staircases I've ever seen in a film.

I feel the dancing is a way that Arthur has learned to cope with how he feels. Like a tick or a release that he can do that allows him to express himself in a way that his actions or words cannot convey. To be fair to him for all his faults he had a life and was making ends meet. He had a job, he had a home, he can dress and feed himself. He can take the train and bus to and from work and where he needed to go and not even mentioning that he cared for his mother. He had created something when the world offered him nothing and his ability to this is miraculous and unfortunately overlooked.

Arthur had just released all his thoughts on society and how it beat him down and brought him to kill, and for a moment, all Murray has to say is a fed-up “You finished?” Murray didn’t see him as a tragic creation of the flaws of Gotham’s community, but just some lunatic who killed for no good reason.

From my viewing experience: the Joker theme (the one that plays during title card and repedetely throughout the movie) sounds very depressing on the first time we hear it, but as movie progresses and Artur descends more and more into madness, it becames more and more sinister. Not knocking it though, I actually loved it, it was brilliantly told and while Im more a Marvel man than a DC dude, I still loved this telling of the Joker and his backstory. Watching it just felt like a reflection of my daily experince (minus the murder of course) so I was just kinda bored watching it like "yeah this shit sucks, whats new?" . Then people talked about it like it was a novel, gross yet fascinating, animal at a zoo. People were almost fanatic about how it was "insane, psycho, scary etc." And it just kinda felt like "is this really what people think about people like me?" The song playing as Arthur dances, "Rock N Roll Part 2", aka the "Hey Song" is a really subtle nod. Gary Glitter was a musician who became more well-known for his crimes and horrendous actions than his performances, and whose music has become detached from the man himself. My high school played that song at every football game but nobody knew the name of the performer. Arthur is a performer who will become known for his crimes and horrendous actions, the few positive things he's done, such as the genuinely funny "But nobody's laughing now!" joke, will become detached from him as the Joker overtakes public knowledge. It's neat and I understand that Gary Glitter's... Actions have made the song uncomfortable to listen to or attach to a film about mental illness and societal issues, but it fits PERFECTLY.

Honestly, the wins channel is so much more enjoyable than the sins now. I know it’s their whole concept but CinemaSins is kinda too negative, at best they point out a funny mistake that a film made but at their worst, they sin things that aren’t even a fault and make a movie seem worse than it is. But CinemaWins really adds to a movie, appreciating things you might miss and you can tell he’s passionate about the craft, you just can’t help but enjoy something along with him

What helps CinemaWins is that it's never afraid to point out flaws in addition to wins - to point out that, yeah, sometimes a scene has issues or something was done poorly in terms of writing, but a flaw here or there shouldn't make or break a film. Some of the most interesting CinemaWins videos are for movies that aren't exactly what people would consider "quality" (e.g., Dark Phoenix). You can't say the same for CinemaSins and its videos on good movies. (Also helping: CinemaWins does that post-wins analysis of the film, and I don't recall CinemaSins ever doing anything like that.) I'll take Wins over Sins any day of the week and twice on Fridays.

Yeah.. CinemaSins is honestly trash. I used to enjoy it but I don't know if it's just me, or a side effect of them making the videos longer and longer, or just their writing in general, but they nitpick damn near everything, even when there's no good reason to do so. Compare the number of sins in older videos to newer ones, the difference is astronomical. It's negativity for the sake of negativity, and people defend them saying it's "parody".

@@TrueChaoSclx Yeah the more meaningless sins they add, the more run time, the more ads, the more money. It makes sense. But when they throw a ton of bullshit sins on a movie as good as Joker and try to make it seem bad it starts to annoy me. They had old episodes well under 10 minutes, but you'll never see that now. 4:50 since viewing Joker I've had this mini-theory as to why Arthur has a laughing fit in the first place: On the surface he laughs to draw the guys attention away from lady, but i believe he saw the guys bullying her as genuinely funny/entertaining(there is plenty of evidence as to Arthur having a much darker side), leading to the laughing fit(kinda like when u try to hold a laugh and it breaks loudly),which calms down a bit after she dips out. Arthur's laugh reminds me of the way I've seen a lot of smokers go into a fit of coughing. I wouldn't even try to compare the two. Heath Ledger was playing a character who was a "force of nature" - a Joker already fully realized and fully accepting of his "role" as a sociopathic serial killer with a message for society. Joaquin Phoenix was playing a character who was transforming into that sociopath - an absolute mess of a man whose life was building up to that "one bad day" (shout out to Killing Joke) that would turn him into The Joker. They're wholly different takes on the character; trying to judge one against the other as if they're the same is a fool's errand.

Yes it is a very good movie, but _most relevant_ movie of the decade? Dude, this came out in the tail end of 2019. How could it have been relevant for the decade?

Man, this film is *staggering* , and I’m glad you brought up the score (I know you like to being up the scores anyway, but still; I don’t think it’s as talked about as it should be), because honestly this film would not have been the same without it. The score is one of the more perfect film scores ever written for its particular film. I’m just completely blown away by it every time I hear it. Though a fun Marvel movie can certainly have its place, I hope comic book movie filmmakers will be inspired by Joker and be brave enough to try something like this again. What really struck me about this film was how much of a classic it instantly felt like, and while some of that is thanks to the retro touches, it clearly imitates what makes great cinema and ultimately makes it its own. This feels more like a recently excavated film from that era rather than a film released in 2019, and it works so brilliantly. For that reason I also think it’s one of the best “period” films out there.

5:07 It’s also a surprise too. The gun shocked me and pretty much everyone in the theater. In movies when a pistol is pulled you hear them pull the slide back or the hammer. Or you see them pull the gun out. It adds to the shock value of him pulling the gun out

Joker made more money than Endgame. It may not have made as much revenue, but it was a lot cheaper to make and they didn't spend as much on advertising. Joker was the most profitable movie of the year.

One thing I noticed about the movie was their use of colour. Whenever he is bathed in bright blue light, his “joker” side is the ruling force. Whenever he’s bathed in orange, he’s still in control. After watching the movie for a second time, you see that every time there’s blue, he’s most likely hallucinating. Addition: as the movie progressed, blue became a much more prevalent colour. Right at the end, right before he walked through the curtain, right before he fully embraced and introduced himself as the Joker, he was bathed in pure blue light Extra addition: his original joker suit is a weak orange, not bright and feels muddled. Once he embraced Joker, it became a strong orange red colour

When he holds the camera to say "that's life", he's under a blue light that combined with his red outfit, we got the purple traditional Joker suit. That's when he becomes full Joker.

Your approach to film critique and analysis never disappoints man. A few years ago in my Film Review/Criticism college course, I got to speak with a professional critic who claimed that, if he saw a movie he had a negative opinion on, he refused to review it. "There's enough negativity in the world," he told me. And I don't think I ever understood what he meant until I became an avid fan of your channel. Movies are so complicated to make. So many hard working people break their backs writing, filming, acting, editing, etc. and they do it because it was their dream to do so and they're lucky enough to pursue it professionally. So when we watch their material, why shouldn't we take time to dive deep and appreciate it for what it is? With every episode, no matter my opinion on the movie, I find myself not only respecting you and the movie itself more, but the craft of filmmaking in general. I'm starting my first real big boy job in the industry this coming fall and couldn't be more excited. I'd love to one day listen to you Win one of the movies/shows I'll have written, if not chat with you about it myself. You're easily one of the best KZfaqrs both in terms of surface-level content and overall subscription value, certainly my favorite critic. Can't wait to see what you have in store for the rest of the year and years to follow.

That scene where Arthur fantasies about his hero simply giving him a moment of humanity is the moment you realize that all Arthur needed to stop him going down the path he did was for one person to just sit down, listen and if needed explain to him gently what was really going on if he was delusional. Instead you just watch a very abused, exploited and damaged individual slip down the rabbit hole and come out the other end a monster...

I have a feeling that this whole movie is a conversation he's having with the psychologist in the white room at the close of the film, that shows up briefly in the beginning when Arthur is speaking with his case worker. I think this is him telling that doctor the movie we are watching, which makes it unreliable, and therefore none of it may be accurate or true. I love the ambiguity it gives the film and it makes for great rewatches.

This is only something I noticed because I watched the film with subtitles: but when Arthur says he heard a song on the radio, it was actually the background music to the scene after he punches the time clock. So Arthur didn't really hear the song on the radio, but it was playing in Arthur's head and we the audience heard it.
