How to Train Your Dragon 3 has come and gone and I can safely say it's one of my favorite animated trilogies ever. Going back through 1 & 2 for clips brought back a bunch of emotions. These are powerful movies. I don't know, maybe I just really want to fly. Here's everything right with The Hidden World!

You're not wrong. Remember the first movie when Hiccup first started learning about dragons? Dragon Nip Scratching around the neck the chin Like to chase light Their diet of fish Aside from appearances, the dragons are pretty much giant, flying, fire-breathing cats.

@@Pyrodragon3993 Fire breathing cats with a bit of dog and bird mixed in... Also based on how the dragons are able to feel complex emotions that reptiles aren't really capable of feeling because of the design of their brains, dragon brains would have to be completely different from any reptiles we know of so would dragons be their own class of animal? (I don't really know crap about science so maybe take that thought with a grain of salt)

Well remebering watching the first movie on tv they shared some facts about the movie, one of which was dragons(specially toothless) were given traits of many animals including dogs, horse and most importantly cats. When he is all happy and cheering he can somehow behave similar to dog in very cheerful way. But other than that everything he does is very similar to cats, specially his appearance and face so similar to a cat which makes him so much lovable as cats are.

Something you didn’t catch - Astrid wears a “headband” (can’t remember the correct name for it) throughout the three films. This headband in Viking culture symbolized a girls virginity, to be passed down after she marries. Her daughter is then wearing that headband in the final scene where her children are shown. SO much attention to detail!

@Madeline James Yeah, the Christmas one actually had a reference in this movie. It was the scene of Hiccup making the tail for Toothless and when Astrid saw it, she said that last time Hiccup made this tail, Toothless didn’t want it. That pointed out that at the end of the Christmas one Toothless deliberately destroyed the tail because he preferred Hiccup guiding him.

9:37 I love love LOVE that Toothless is a little awkward taking off. He's had Hiccup helping him fly for over a year at this point, so he'd be a little out of practice, not to mention that he can't feel the new prosthetic tail like he could his natural tail. So he's a little clunky and has to flap his wings a lot at first, but then it comes back to him easily since he's been flying for most of his life. Tiny little details like that make the HTTYD films so great.

What I thought was amazing was how Grimmel is literally a version of Hiccup if he had given into the urge of killing Toothless in the first movie. I think Grimmel mentions it in the movie himself that he was scrawny unlike most vikings and realized his destiny after his first kill, which was a nightfury. He also depends on building things instead of physical strength much like Hiccup. He literally IS Hiccup. Hiccup isn't facing a crazy psychopath when he first confronts Grimmel in his hut, he is looking at an alternate version of himself. That's why I think he was such a poetically perfect villain for the final movie.

I loved Astrid's "that's a king" line because it doesn't just apply to Toothless. Hiccup is constantly doing what's best for the people of Berk and in this movie he does what's best for the dragons of Berk as well. He gives up, as you said, one of the loves of his life, to keep Toothless and the other dragons safe. And that's what a good king does.

I like how Liry subverts the expectations of "small woman weak must be protected by big strong man" that society has come to expect, instead she seems to be actively trying to protect both herself and Toothless at all times. Also, on the subject of her design, a lot of people brought up that her being white wouldn't help her camouflage as a nocturnal species, but in the hidden world everything glows so being white and sparkly would help you camouflage because it would be easier to reflect all of that glowing light making yourself harder to see. Okay I'm done now.

One very cool fact that I assume to be intentional is how the endings are at different times in the day in each movie HTTYD 1 ended in the morning, claiming it’s the start HTTYD 2 ended at midday, which is the middle of the series HTTYD 3 ended with the sun setting, which claims it to be the end of a trilogy

Is no one really gonna talk about Hiccup and Astrid? They are the epitome of a healthy relationship. They're realistic (most relationship starts with a crush) and not your cliche love at first sight couple They're a modern couple that we all can relate to They're both equals and no one is controlling the other They push each other to be better individuals They don't let their relationship get in the way of important things (ie. Work, friends, family, Toothless) They're one of the rare instances of an animated couple having a complete development arc. (Oh my god Hiccstrid babies!!) And I really appreciate how Astrid wasn't made into a "just the main character's girlfriend" like some movies. THW really shows how intimate and loving their relationship is. Astrid is Hiccup's voice of reason and his number one supporter. He depends on her just like how she depends on him. When the villagers protested against him, she had his back. When he was lost without Toothless, she pulled him back and made him realise his true worthiness. She understood him and knew his flaws and insecurities, but remained loyal by his side. Their relationship wasn't just pure romance,it was mutual partnership filled with love and understanding. Heck, they only kissed properly in the third movie during their wedding. And don't get me started on the relationship advices I learned from these two

They're also great because, in a lot of movies with sequels where the "main couple" gets together at the end of the film, the next movie will start with their relationship on the ropes (either that, or they broke up off-screen between movies for reasons that may or may not be explained) in order to try and re-enact their "love story" because the couple being in a stable, long-term relationship apparently diminishes their entertainment value as a potential B-Plot. Then in movies where they don't do that, there's usually some sort of difference of opinion that pits the couple at odds enough to either result in an impermanent break-up (they'll be back together by the end of the film) or at the very least some heavy cold shoulder-ing. The thing that's great about Hiccup and Astrid is that, even when they don't agree on something, they still respect one another and their opinion and go to lengths to talk it through. There's never a moment where they're yelling or demeaning the other - just pure respect and a genuine desire to hear the other out and see their point of view. It's honestly one of the best, most healthy relationships I've ever seen of a couple through multiple films in a franchise, and it makes me really happy to see it in a movie that's catered to a younger audience.

Miasimon There still could be, though. The Hidden World was the end of the saga, sure, but dragons had been around long before Hiccup and Toothless came about, and were no doubt in far off, distant places. So, that still leaves a lot of room for prequels and/or parallel side stories that take place in other parts of the world.

Fun fact: during the movie when Hiccup is making the "new" tail Asrid asked "didint he have one of there before?" and hiccup even said "yes" (something around those lines) this was a reff to the FIRST HTTYD x-mas movie How to train your dragon- Gift of the nightfury- but now that he meets the lightfury this kinda re enact something that was a main point if HTTYD race to the edge: the episode where hookfang challenges a titan wing nightmare to protect a female he cares for but in the end hookfang came back to his rider. so kinda also explained why toothless didint freak out when he opened his tail and the new one mimicked, he has had this tail before but just not this upgraded! i love how they add in those tiny snip hints of past things like GotN and even some scars from fights (if ya dont know: toothless has a few scars over his body at at around 9:33 we can see a scar around his wing joint) (im sorry i have loved httyd and been with it from its first trailer drop! XD)

7:55 except Liry isnt a Night Fury so she wouldnt look like toothless, its some kinda subspecies or something and we do see more Light Furies later on in the hidden world, its just that Toothless is the last night fury and they wanted to keep that so just invent a new species compatible enough with him and bam, i really respect that theres a subversion to "person who thought they were alone finds a hidden colony of more of them" and rather its brutal and honest that Toothless really is alone and the man whos responsible is coming for him

Light fury doesnt have a name because she represents the wild and free nature of dragons. The fact that she was never tamed and named by the Vikings reflects the ending of the movie when they free their dragons. I liked the symbolism of her not having a name. And since the moment Hiccup made toothless a new tail, he didnt have riding saddle on him for the rest of the movie. Again it reflected the end of the moving and the freeing of the dragons

As someone who read the entire book series the ending to 3 was a pleasant surprise. It was the one thing when I watched this movie I thought "they won't do that, they haven't got the guts". The ending in the books is honestly even darker and more bittersweet than the movie ending, but I think that's the point. Hiccup tried and tried to make dragons and humans coexist but in the movies he realised that there will always be people who want to harm dragons and in the books he realises that he can't change the world in a single lifetime. The book ends on the note that the world is far form perfect and that while Hiccup was able to make things better, he nor any one person can do it all, and he leaves it up to the reader to make the world a better place so that the dragons can return. I think the movie gets a bit muddled as it wanted to emulate that ending but also have the whole "next generation" bit with Hiccup's kids. I'm happy they tried to match the end of the books while also putting their own spin on it, it wasn't perfect but it was a great effort and I applaud them for that.

For me, it drove home the fact Toothless is the last of his kind and how alone that made him. All the other species have exemplars to learn from to use their talents, to court, etc... Hiccup and he became so close specifically because he had no one to truly bond with among his kind. He never had a friend till then. Add to that, he had been oppressed by a terrifying Alpha (The Red Death) One could say he didn't ever know how to be a complete dragon until he met Hiccup, Valka, and "Liry". Each one completed a piece for him and when he was finally whole, he could take his place as an adult and start a family. (I kinda, might have, screamed with joy when I saw the wee furies)

It's similar to loving someone with deeper emotions than they feel for you: it's okay to feel deeply for someone, while at the same time allowing them to feel what they feel and respecting that, even if it doesn't end up leading to an intimate relationship. Often times the hardest thing is telling yourself to let that person go be who they are in life, with or without you, because you love them deeply, even if they don't love you as much back. I've had a number of times where I loved someone, and wanted to be in an intimate relationship with them, but they did not feel the same way. Accepting that was hard, and challenging, but by accepting that and letting them know that I accepted my emotions without imposing my emotions onto them, we remained, and remain, friends to this day. Because I wanted, more than anything to have a relationship with them, intimate or not. Every single time I developed feelings for someone was because of the friendship I developed with them first, and even if my feelings grew deeper and weren't returned, the friend-relationship I had was far more valuable to me than trying to impose my feelings onto someone else; I want to grow closer to those I love, not drive them away with my greed for more intimacy.

The ending was so emotional for me, Hiccup and Toothless were such a great friendship for one another, and HTTYD will always be forever in my heart as one of the best animated series that I've ever seen in my entire life. It's sad to see that the amazing series has ended. I will never stop thinking about how these two characters were such a monumental piece in the entire series. Their friendship grew, and they loved one another. This movie was very well animated to the point where it made me so connected throughout the entire series, as a whole. Thankyou DreamWorks for making this masterpiece that the series has become. We Miss You Hiccup and Toothless 😄♥

I was 7 the first time I saw the first one in theatre, I was 11 when we bought the second one and then I watched the newest one for my 16th birthday. It was so emotional watching a part of my childhood end, it was kinda signifying the end of mine in a way which was partially heartbreaking.

@@wilverine5557 100% on the mark. I can see myself in Hiccup, going from an outcast to a leader. I honestly had a 2 hour convo with my girlfriend the other night about how our relationship dynamic is literally Astrid and Hiccup's. And especially the saying goodbye aspect and how hard it is, given the fact that I graduated High School during COVID and didn't really get that chance. I really do hope that sometime in the future they do bring back a spinoff or something, similar to Homecoming, because there's so much more potential with these characters and this franchise

Aye, this movie came out 2019, so I was 19 then. I in a way felt like I was growing up with the characters, they became adults around a similar age to me. In a way, this third movie kinda felt like childhood's end for me. I read the book series this was based off of, and while I would change some parts I wouldn't change the end even though I knew even before I saw the movie it was gonna end that way. They took some aspects from the first book to begin the series, and took some aspects from the last few books for the end. It's sad and I feel like there won't be movies that click like this, but that's ok I think.

If any of you are wondering why toothless never uses the invisibility in any of the movies even though he always had the ability, Valka said in HTTYD 2 that toothless is the same age as Hiccup. Hiccup is still trying to unlock his true potential and figure out what his purpose. He still doesn’t know what he is capable of and figures that out throughout the movies.Toothless was meant to reflect Hiccup. This movie trilogy was meant to explain that physical features aren’t what makes something. It’s all about what they are on the inside.

There is actually a new TV series coming out from Dreamworks Dragons this December that is set, I believe, 1300 years in the future of the originals -- in other words, modern times. There is speculation the boy is a descendant of Hiccup and the dragon is a descendent of Toothless. It's called Dragons: The Nine Realms.

I think you missed something in that scene where Hiccup and Grimmel are falling that I think is pretty damn neat and symbolic. Hiccup and Grimmel, both so similar yet so different, are falling to their deaths. (One because of Self Sacrifice, the other by force) And as they fight while falling in slow motion, you see Grimmel tearing off Hiccup's wings, before the Liry comes in to save him, while Grimmel dies. I thought that was a beautiful moment of symbolism. Even if Grimmel lost, he managed to hurt them all enough to take his wings (Toothless) away from him. To force Hiccup to tell the dragons to go into hiding. I got teary eyed when watching that scene and realising what it really meant.

and something else worth pointing out about that scene is that hiccup had come to terms with his fate and wasn't trying to fight Grimmel as he was tearing off the wings and as they both fell to their fate but if Grimmel had not tried to rip off hiccup's already broken wings, then he would not have drifted away out of the reach of hiccup as he is saved.

The Whisperer of Death Another symbolic piece: Grimmel is the Hiccup that Hiccup didn’t become. He decided to draw blood, and became fixated with the sensation of being accepted for it. Hiccup decided to show mercy, and helped unite Berk and dragons. They are the same, separated by only one choice in their lives, one choice that caused identical lives to diverge in pathing greatly.

I like that point at 3:33 It being highly likely to Stoic he can never seal up the hidden world, he does the next best thing and decides to eliminate the nearest nest. Doesn't solve dragons as a whole but maybe just for Berk. This is where we see him as semi-bad guy in Hiccup's eyes because eliminating a nest seems far less peaceful than putting a cork in the dragon bottle
