Another fun fact: The line "No parent should have to bury their child" wasn't in the original script. Bernard Hill who played King Theoden was approached by a woman years earlier who told him in her grief that no parent should have to bury their child and he remembered that encounter and added that phrase during filming that day. Peter Jackson was so touched by how it came out and the look on Bernard Hill's face that he kept it in the movie.

A couple of points I like to take from the arrival of the party at Edoras. 1) Gamling (the doorkeeper) knows that Gandalf's staff is dangerous, but he also hates what is happening to his King. He accepts the very obvious lie Gandalf is telling because he WANTS an excuse to let Gandalf have a weapon. 2) The thugs in the throne room AREN'T men of Rohan, they are minions of Saruman sent to provide Grima with muscle to back up his lies and manipulations. This is why the guards (the men in Rohirrim armour) do nothing when the party is fighting them.

Bonus Trivia: Vigo Mortensen is just an all-around bad-ass and good guy! Viggo Mortensen was the only principal actor who had never read Lord of the Rings (before being cast). When Peter Jackson offered him the role of Aragorn, he told Jackson he'd have to talk it over with his family. Moving to New Zealand for more than a year was a hell of an ask and Viggo was quite concerned with how it might affect his young son. He needn't have worried as his son was an avid LotR fan and, as soon as he heard what role his dad had been offered, began bouncing off the walls with "MY DAD'S GONNA BE ARAGORN! MY DAD'S GONNA BE ARAGORN!" How the heck could he possibly turn down the role after that?!? Viggo completely threw himself into the role, pretty much becoming Aragorn 24/7 - never went anywhere without his sword, and nearly always wearing at least some part of his costume. He was integral in helping to design and augment his costume and props; asking for a dagger to be included on his sword sheath ("I'm not going to butcher a deer with my sword, am I?") including a whetstone (even learning how to properly hone blades with it), adding the sewn sleeves detail (both for versatility and because Aragorn would know how to sew), etc. He even trained with a number of Maori warriors (who were cast as extras) so as to maintain an efficient and consistent fighting style throughout filming. Liv Tyler's riding double had fallen in love with Arwen's horse but she didn't have a lot of extra cash when the horse was auctioned off at the end of filming; she was heartbroken when the bids quickly passed anything she could hope to afford. She was outside alone, crying, when Viggo came up to her... and handed her the reins - he knew that she and that horse belonged together and determined to buy it for her, no matter the cost, and refused to accept any payment from her.

@@scloftin8861 I have a 'bad' habit of adding my own 'subtitles'/commentary to movies (particularly when watching at home with friends) and one while watching The Two Towers made us stop the movie for nearly half an hour because we couldn't stop laughing. In the scene where Aeowyn is passing out the stew she made (so bad that even Gimli turns it down with an "I couldn't possibly"), Aragorn takes a bite and freezes - the Dunedin ranger who has dined on tree bark and squirrel droppings, and her stew is the vilest thing he has ever put into his mouth. They discuss his history (and age) a bit before she excuses herself and says "Please, eat." I have no idea where it came from but, when Aragorn looks up at her with that split-second baleful glare, I muttered (in my best Aragorn voice) "Don't threaten *me* woman." Granted, our peculiar shared interests were probably the biggest factor, but it landed so perfectly that everyone burst out laughing - then, just when everything seemed to be dying down, we'd glance at each other, someone would chuckle, and that set everyone off again. It's lost its punch over the years but that line still brings a smile to the face of everyone who was there at that moment. Again, I admit that the way it landed probably had a lot to do with our little group but I can't help but wonder what reactions it would get from other people in other groups - particularly if it was dropped on them without warning.

I actually think you can't understand how fantastic Sean Astin's performance is unless you're from England. Like, that is a PITCH PERFECT West Country accent, which is an accent most native English people can't do without sounding mocking and one that most Americans haven't even heard of. He nails it, to the extent that most people I've spoken to here (England) about LOTR are shocked when they learn Astin's not from Cornwall or Somerset, but Santa Monica of all places. Add that to the fantastic layers of emotion, complexity and character he adds to Sam and it's criminal he wasn't at least nominated for an Oscar. It is an utterly transformative performance.

I completely agree. And not just for this. Andy's filmography is filled to bursting with amazing roles and voice work. He's almost singlehandedly written the book on mocap work and is usually either instrumental in, or an advisor in any film that showcases extreme amounts of it. But because the Academy is old and antiquated, it refuses to create a category for or even recognize mocap as legitimate acting. And that's simply criminal. Quite frankly, I think the Oscars is outdated garbage...a reason for Hollywood to celebrate itself and pat itself on the back. But, for actors dealing in the craft, having an Oscar MEANS something. It has weight and it shifts careers. And I get that. So, as unnecessary as I personally think it is, I hope that one day the Academy undergoes some fundamental changes. And if that day ever comes, I feel like Andy will be the first to receive a belated/retroactive/honorary award. Because he deserves it.

There's an interesting behind the scenes story from the commentary about how when Peter Jackson was first pitching the films to the producers, he was ready to compromise and try to get the entire series done in two films, but he knew for sure there was just too much to do it in one. So when he was trying to sell them on two movies, they said "no, absolutely not. We can only do this as a trilogy". It's a minor thing but I think one of the reasons why the movies turned out so well is just that everybody involved, from all the way at the top with the financiers willing to back the films as a trilogy even when Jackson himself was only pitching it as two films, down to all the work being done by the costume designers hand connecting thousands of links of chainmail, had so much confidence in the project that they were willing to put in the amount of effort they all knew it was going to take. It's weird to think about in the aftermath of their success but the track record for Lord of the Rings film projects was pretty awful before the Jackson trilogy and that level of commitment was a *huge* risk for everybody, but for whatever reason they all just knew it was going to be worth it.

one tidbit of trivia that I love about the making of this film is that stunt actors were genuinely afraid of Viggo during fight scenes. These massive, burly New Zealanders who basically fight for a living feared the guy who didn't know how to use a sword before this movie, because he would go all out in fight scenes and left bruises despite the latex prosthetics and armor. They all were buddies outside filming though, and they also had a tradition of bumping foreheads to say hello and that left bruises too apparently Edit: my mistake! I just rewatched the making of LOTR (as you casually do) and stunt actors were afraid of John Rhys Davis, Gimli's actor! But they were buddies with Viggo, and the bruises I mentioned were left on Orlando Bloom's forehead

Apparently John Rhys-Davies was a terror to fight against because: He was allergic to the glue for his prosthetics, making his face and eyes swell partially closed, His helmet limited his peripheral vision, and He didn't really learn his fight choreography, preferring to give Gimli a very basic hack and slash fighting style of basically hitting whichever stuntman presented himself next.

Not exactly comparable since LOTR was one long book that was published in 3 parts for ecomonic reasons, whereas Empire is a "simple", normal sequel. One continuous, very long story vs. one more story that can have different themes, etc.

The part I love the most in this movie is right after Viggo broke his toe. It's a shame you stopped at the yell. It shows that in the midst of despair, loss, and failure there is always hope and Viggo Mortenson sells it perfectly with his look when he realises something more has happened and starts tracking the flow of the battle to find the 'crumbs' of the hobbits' escape. It's something that is then echoed in Helm's Deep, and then in further parts of the story... everything is darkest before the dawn and all hope is never lost.

I remember Theoden saying "A parent should never have to bury their child" and the pain in his voice and the agnoy. I lost my daughter in 2020 and i too missed the last moments alive beacuse I was tired and breastfeeding my other child, i didn't want to go in her room and retuck her in. And i regret that more than anything else in the world. And that pain, that heartbreak was soo real! i felt that pain and sadly couldn't fall apart my family still needed me, i had people to take care of. So like Theoden, I had to keep going. something I really love about this movie is the fact that Faramir's encounter with Frodo and Sam wasn't even in the books.. and yet Sam's speech and Faramir's *conscious* decision to turn down the one ring (despite his emphatic desire to win his father's approval and save Gondor's people) are some of the most pivotal and well acted scenes of the entire trilogy in my opinion.
@rozatoth1934
@rozatoth1934 Жыл бұрын
I guess it must've been a long time since you read the books, because Faramir does meet Frodo and Sam. The part that's not in the books is him taking them to Osgiliath. In the books, Faramir just listens to the hobbits' story; and even after they accidentally say that they have the One Ring with them, he lets them go, already knowing that the power of the Ring is not for Gondor to use. They changed that in the movies because it would've undermined the tempting powers of the Ring, and because this way we could see some character growth in Faramir.

It's never been confirmed but I highly suspect that originally Aragorn saw the sun starting to rise, remembered Gandalf's words, and then told Theoden to ride out and fight the Uruk Hai. It's a thread from the books that hasn't translated into the film. In the books iirc, Saruman completely blocks out the sun to allow for easier orc travel, and the siege lasts several days. I think the key to understanding Smeagol's change of heart is understanding that he percieves their capture by Faramir as a betrayal. Smeagol gains the upper hand because of Frodo's kindness and regard and because he is treated like a person. When Faramir is holding them captive, Frodo explicitly told Gollum he would be safe if he approached. But then Faramir's men grabbed and restrained him, and very likely treated him poorly. Which allowed "Gollum" (and the ring) to whisper that Frodo & Sam cannot be trusted and mean them harm. It's one of the great tragedies of the films (and the books) and reinforces the message about mercy & kindness & trust & their power to change the world.

In this shot, we see *two* trolls from a high angle, far enough away that their whole bodies fit in frame. A distinctive roar is reused to remind us of the troll in Fellowship. Something I never realised about this film before rewatching them last week was Treebeard actually has a line about a group of ents heading to Helms Deep and that’s why a forest appears where there wasn’t one before as the Uruk Hai’s are running away. A nice little touch that I’d never spotted before. Anyway, great video as always

I don't think he specifically says Helm's Deep but he does say the trees have business with orcs (or something to that effect). Nice foreshadowing Also I don't think they were Ents, I think they were regular Fangorn Forest trees. All the Ents went to Isengard

@@DreamyAileen I believe the in-universe name for them is Huorns. They’re trees that, like the ents, were awakened by the elves speaking to them and have some degree of awareness and mobility. However they either never achieved full sentience or lost it over the ages.

@@chrayez This. The distinction is never made in the films themselves, but in the source material the Huorns are a thing somewhat apart from and definitely a _lot_ less 'nice' than the Ents. They're a darker, much more primal spirit: maybe they were once trees that were influenced by the walking, sentient Ents in ages past, or maybe they were once Ents who became more like the trees they guarded; by the late Third Age of Middle-earth, it seems impossible to tell anymore. Either way, they're creatures of the deepest, gnarliest, most shadowy parts of the ancient forests, long to brood and slow to move - but when they do, they seem to _carry_ that shadow with them. They have no love at all for living creatures or even 'noble' races like the Elves, and unlike the 'true' Ents they can't be entreated, conversed nor reasoned with. They're actually one of the scariest creations in Tolkien's legendarium, all the more so for not being 'evil' per se but merely... elemental. Even the great Ents themselves, like Treebeard, appear to just barely command their respect and allegiance. Their hatred for despoilers like Orcs, though is ultimate, and implacable. Unleashed upon the routed forces of Isengard, their vengeance is swift, murky but horrifyingly final, as the terrified Uruks flee under the eaves of this forest-that-wasn't-there and vanish into its unnatural shadows, never to come out again. Fun factoid: I believe Tolkien included this scene as a nod to Shakespeare's _Macbeth_ and specifically its famous climax. The titular usurper knows throughout the play of a prophecy that he cannot be defeated "until Birnam Wood comes to Dunsinane", a threat he laughs off because obviously trees cannot move. In the end, his downfall comes after his enemy Malcolm has his forces _disguise_ themselves with tree branches before advancing on Macbeth at Dunsinane, causing the visual effect of the wood itself moving and Macbeth realising he is done for. Tolkien, I believe, regarded this as a bit of a lame 'cheat' on Shakespeare's part (i.e. the prophecy is fulfilled in spirit but not really in fact), but consequently wondered what it would be like if the trees really _did_ move...

(And re Huorns not being evil as such. This is _broadly_ true, but there's certainly suggestion that individual ones really can go over to the bad side. In the book, the hobbits' infamous early encounter with Tom Bombadil when first leaving the Shire comes when he rescues them from Old Man Willow in the Old Forest, their small local remnant of Middle-earth's primeval woods, where one dark patch in particular is the domain of this malevolent tree spirit - who seems to be something very like a Huorn gone rogue. Falling, nearly fatally, into Old Man Willow's clutches like this is perhaps their first real eye-opener that the world is a lot bigger, older, nastier and scarier than anything their cloistered young lives in the Shire have ever prepared them for, long before they have even begun to get near the brewing war against the forces of Sauron. Even then, though, this 'evil' is nothing directly to do with the side of Sauron and his allies, but an older, more universal sort of badness. In the same way, Bombadil is resistant to it and superior to it due to an innate 'goodness' that is very little to do with the 'good' side in the struggle against the Dark Lord, but again something seemingly just built into the fabric of the world before and beyond the petty struggles of demi-gods, elves and men. It's apparently fair to say that Tolkien himself couldn't quite explain where and how all this came from or belonged in the overarching narrative, so it's easy to see why it gets quickly lopped out of adaptations like these movies.)

17:30 Well, there's also the fact that the Gondorian soldiers and Ithilien rangers look nothing like the Lothlorien Elves or Rohirrim. And the Uruks look very different from all of them, as well as the Mordor Orcs.

Because you said you read the comments, thank you for putting in the effort to do these videos. Its super appreciated to highlight the good work put into movies and not just focus on where people buggered up. Helps appreciate them even more. Thanks!

My favorite thing about this is that Gandalf's arrival is mirrored in the next, and in both, there's a speech before the counterattack. It's absolutely beautiful

I'm glad you're using the Extended Cuts. The extended editions mean a lot to me in the same way that you mentioned the theatrical versions meaning a lot to you. My parents were superfans; I'm pretty sure they've had the box set of the Extended Editions for nearly as long as they've had me. I grew up on the Extended Editions; to me they are the definitive version of the story. It's to the point where I actually didn't realize that you were only using a single cut because I'm so used to everything; I haven't even seen the theatrical cuts (although I probably should. I'm holding out for a Blu-Ray release with both on there). I remember Two Towers being my favorite of the Trilogy growing up, and while it's obviously great for the life of me I can't remember why. Maybe I was a fan of the Frodo, Sam and Gollum stuff? Who knows. Great video!
