My take on an alternate cover for Madeline Miller's novel Circe (just for fun). I highly, highly recommend exploring her works - they made me see Greek mythology in a completely different way 🌿

i don't know if some of the points below were intentional or not, but for what it's worth, i really appreciate the thoughtfulness colour palette that you picked. spoilers ahead! i feel like in the book, Circe's family, her father and siblings, are often associated with light, bright and warm tones. This is not necessarily because of their character, but more so their heritage and the way that Miller portrays them. When visualizing these characters, you often picture hues of reds, yellows, and oranges-the aureate radiance of Pasiphaë's hair being like the sun on water, or the searing almost-white yellow of Helios's aura. Yet, their actual personalities are so far from the kindness and warmth these colours typically connote. They are cold, calculating, and relentlessly cruel. However, from birth, Circe has always been different from the rest of her family. Yes, though she is still the daughter of Helios and was mentioned to have inherited *some* of his qualities, they were always LESS THAN. Her hair is tainted by streaks of brown, her eyes are an "owlish" yellow (in the words of her sibling's tauntings) and her skin not quite bronze enough. You do not associate the same golden, sun-kissed features with Circe as strongly as you would the rest of her family. Yet, unlike her family and all their literal incandescence, she is not as ruthless and sadistic as them. (Although to be fair, she does indeed have her fair share of cruelties) Even from the very start with Prometheus, you see a gentle kindness in Circe’s actions and an inclination to alleviate the Titan's sufferings. When Hermes tells her tales of the violent deaths of sailors at the hand of Scylla, she shows a strong longing to right her wrongs, ultimately taking the risk to defeat Scylla herself. In my opinion, the brazen juxtaposition between the cool blue-purple tones you picked and the intense colours of her family beautifully illustrates exactly how she is many things her family is not. And I think it is very symbolic that her differences between her and her family are what eventually allowed her to find resolution in her tragedy- her contempt of divinity that her family (from those of Titan blood to the nymphs and naiads) so vehemently treasured. Sorry for the long read. i just really enjoyed the book and wanted to show appreciation for the effort that has been put into both the beautifully put together video and stunning illustration. (:

I absolutely love your interpretation! The blues & indigos were a purely intuitive choice, but what's interesting to me is that I never even thought to associate Circe with gold until I saw other artistic depictions of her. To me, she was always a shadow of her father and siblings, but also (as you've eloquently put it), many things her family is not. While this is not nearly as deep, I've also realized how closely the blues make the forest simultaneously feel like an ocean, and how the diagonal lines feel like tides hitting the shore. Thanks for taking the time to leave this in-depth comment; I'm really glad the design was able to encourage interpretations beyond what I intended 💛

I think she did a great deal for the cover. The process here is to think more on the audience, who would most need the book (1:15). Therefore the purple tones justify for that, as well as the emptiness/ spaciousness/ minimalism feel to it. To draw up the book again with details from the story would be only to focus on the story, which has been done for centuries in the printing industry. But once in a while, it's cool to see book covers that interact. Especially the purple tone is kind of the color of intuition/ sadness/ loneliness. If you see it under commercial eyes, it would appear to be like a notebook cover rather than a story unfold. But under a more conceptual perspective, it's on point.

I rewatch your videos over and over whenever I'm feeling uninspired. Each time, I notice something new. This time I realised one of the reasons I love the way you present things is the homemade videos and images you put to support your main contents. Makes the video feel more personal and tender, but it's perfectly balanced with the use of other people's art so that it doesn't feel too much like a vlog. I love your art so much.
