Circuses Don't Do This With Animals Like In The 1950s

The St. Louis Zoo, like many others during the 1950s, featured these kinds of animal shows as a way to draw visitors and provide entertainment. Perspectives on animal welfare have echanged and modern zoos focus more on conservation, education, and the natural behavior of animals rather than training them to perform tricks for entertainment like are shown here.
In the 1950s, animal performances at zoos, including the St. Louis Zoo, were a popular attraction. These performances often included a variety of animals like chimpanzees, elephants, and other exotic creatures, which were trained to perform tricks and behaviors that amused audiences. The ethos and understanding of animal welfare at the time were significantly different from today's standards, and such performances were generally accepted and enjoyed by the public without the ethical concerns that they might raise today.
Chimpanzees, for example, were often dressed in human clothing and trained to perform human-like tasks, such as riding bicycles, playing musical instruments, or acting out skits. These performances were designed to highlight the chimps' ability to mimic human behavior, and they were often a central attraction.
Elephants were trained to perform various tricks, such as standing on their hind legs, balancing on balls, or parading in elaborate costumes. These displays showcased the elephants' immense size and strength but also their ability to be controlled and guided by human trainers.

these animals were so well trained, but sadly a lot of their training involved so much abuse and isolation. thankfully there were trainers out there who genuinely loved the animals including audiences

I'm old enough to have seen circuses featuring animal acts, and I can say with conviction that I do not miss them. But, I still love _Cirque du Soleil_ type productions.

Me too. I remember watching lions and elephants in the 70s and disliking it even then. I never got the appeal. I went to see the big circus outside of showtimes every time they came, and watch the workers. I distictly remember feeling bad for the animals in their tiny cages. Only the horses got more space, and even that wasn't very big.

Growing up in a bubble then, we had no idea of animal abuse. I loved the circus but before our big center was built, the Shriners had a circus in a big buiding. Picture 2 elephants on a stage! Worse was the place had a balcony and some man ( I didn't know it at the time,) was dressed like a gorilla and.jumped down from the balcony! I was terrified and more when he grabbed my beret! They also had a clown with a dirty rag who got boys' ears! My grandmother was mortified and I was in the floor! That was so long ago. With a new building, I went to the circus every year. Actually met the lion tamer Gunther G. Williams. When news of how circus animals were treated, the Ringling circus ceased to exist.

I remember seeing at the local zoo as a child in the 1950s, the Chimpanzee Tea Party presentation. I remember thinking it was dumb of people to laugh at them. It made me feel squeamish.

I appreciate the title of the video. Especially because, for me, the topic is sort of a double edged sword. It's rather obvious to me that we shouldn't want animals to be mistreated. The other "edge" though, experiencing animals interacting with people like that can be such an awe-inspiring moment in a person's life, on multiple levels. Plus, some of the trainers not only treated their animals well but even loved them fiercely as family members. So the thought of this type of activity including a completely ethical "backstage" is highly appealing to me. And I think that's possible actually. ❤

@MicahScottPnD... Well said Micah I have seen a documentary on animal trainers, those who work with domestic animals to those who work with nondomestic and the bound between the owner and their animal are remarkable.

I have often thought about the stories my grandparents would tell me about going to the circus. For them as children, even prior to the 50s, it was a chance to see animals that people couldn't see on a regular basis. They sort of described it to me as being a once in a life time chance. It's amazing how TV and inevitably the Internet has changed all that.

I agree Alison I got my share of shows when I was younger, yes it was a once in a lifetime for sure, it didn't make it right but now we have technology so we don't have to capture as much.

I went to a Circus when I was 6 or 7, I did not like the way the animals were treated. as I got older, I began to understand the hard work the aerial and trapeze acts put in to be at the skill level they are.

My father used to love this kind of stuff. He'd goad me to do it for guests when they'd visit. I'd put my head on the floor while raising my legs in the air while my father, playing the ringmaster shouted, "The Elephant Act!" No one protested his cruelty to ME !

It's kinda hard to believe with the way it is now, to even get my head around some of the (down right cruel) things they used to train animals to do! For example: animal racing, especially back in like the 1930s & 40s? (Fortunately) I never had to see a monkey whippin' a dog down a back stretch! I've only heard about it 🐒🐕😂😂😂 (Sorry)✌

I do wonder if these animals would prefer doing the performances vs sitting in cages/pens loafing around doing nothing? The fact is they are captive and need stimulation and preforming is probably good for them

Fortunately, not all the trainers were horrible and abusive to the animals, but enough were to bring an end to this kind of show. The best trainers knew the animals were very smart, and could be motivated better through rewards than dominance and punishment. They enjoyed enrichment and socialisation, and in those conditions, learned quickly, and eagerly. I disagree with taking them out of their natural environments to teach them tricks for the amusement of people, but having worked in a sideshow, I got to see what thr relationship between a good trainer, who loved the animals and wasn’t afraid of them could be with his animals. They were very clear on who they liked, and who they didn’t want near them, and the good companies never made the animals tolerate the close proximity of those they didn’t like or trust. It was both a dark chapter, and one that caused a growing understanding of animal intelligence and emotional sophistication. I’m glad I have lived to see the end of intelligent, sentient beings being used yo amuse the masses, and the beginnings of humane study of them in protected ecosystems. Thank you David, for keeping the conversation going.🖤🇨🇦

Yea, and it's too bad that politics has destroyed yet another entertainment institution. Most of those animals weren't abused and they lived very comfortable lives compared to what kind of life they would have had in the wild.

I am not a fan of Any circus, zoo or aquarium that keeps animals caged for viewing and performance. Imagine it was you stuck in that tank or cage for the rest of your life. Same goes for people that live in the city and keep dogs. The poor dog is stuck inside for it's entire life. That is not a natural habitat for them. I have chickens, though I let them free range.
