old xl painting handle is better for 50mm and 60mm.(what i have) this new handle just sticks out too much on both sides for both those sizes. also i wouldn,t trust this thing without using extra rubber bands when it comes to bigger models. sure it does everything but it doesn,t quite do everything right. above 80mm i think a painting handle defeats its purpose of holding tiny miniatures secure to paint in detail. but to each their own of course excellent review as always.

Instant avoid. The older version is more secure. Even the older smaller ones. The advantage of the newer ones are the smaller neck - which allows for more ways to position and hold the model; and the cut-out - which allows for more access below and under the model. The compromise was a weaker hold. This was acceptable in smaller models because they are typically lighter, and you can avoid any pressure against them while holding them w the handle. The large handle has the same narrow neck - and naturally due to the size of the model, when placed between your fingers (as was designed) - the model base then rests squarely in the palm of your hand - putting all that pressure on the base - making it pop out with the slightest touch. It’s just science and physics, ain’t it? If they wanted to “fix” this… they should have added anchor points for large (but not strong) rubber bands, similar to what they have on the painting stick - that would provide a secondary restraint. This current, terrible design with no thought to the user will lead to many broken models, and more money for GW when you buy replacements. If you buy replacements. This design is so bad GW should have included a complimentary waiver of liability - that’s not to protect you but for them of course! $$$

what are the holes for?

If GW were truly business-smart, they would produce a line of larger bases with a threaded bottom - and then these butt-plug handles that would just screw into the threaded access. How hard is that to do GW??! It’s simple - uses less material, and gives you more money as each base is a new purchase! And guess who loves to spend GW bucks?
