Once again returning to my favourite pastime (I'm switching to UK spelling out of respect, of course) - making small villages among hills and farm fields. With some train lines and regional road systems to boot!
Updates? Paradox Mods? Beach Properties? Sounds interesting, might look at that later. But first, we need to plant some trees, man 💪🌳

I'd like to see this series continue. It's very unique and on of the only truly rural regions in the Cities Skylines bubble since Sanctum Gamer abandoned Nomasburg.

One thing I would say is that housing in the UK is very different from Europe. There is a very strong cultural dislike of apartment buildings in the UK. That is why most residential buildings are max 3-4 storeys high. So low rise mixed use and "row housing" are very common but the larger mixed use and "medium density" are quite rare. And although a lot of people live in terraced houses, detached or semi detached properties are the most common. Just look at how suburban most towns and cities are. Here's an extract from the 2021 census: 7.8 million households (31.5% of all households) were in semi-detached properties, up from 31.3% (7.3 million) in 2011 5.8 million (23.2%) were in detached properties, up from 5.3 million (22.7%) in 2011 5.7 million (23.2%) were in terraced properties, down from 5.8 million (24.6%) in 2011 Otherwise, fantastic work!

Another tip is that when zoning low rent housing, you should try and leave a large square/rectangular open space (just grass) around it. Most of the high-rises in the UK were built during slum clearance in the 1950s, so the idea was to move people from dark, unsanitary alleyways to modern towers that were more dense but then left the freed-up space from the demolished slum as open recreation space. Of course, this led to social isolation and ghettoisation but that's another story ...

I can't stop admiring how you seem to have the perfect amount of jankiness in those roads to mimic the shapes and structures of roads in real life.

My vote would be to stick with this build. There’s not enough new stuff to justify starting over, imo. Loving the series btw.

Please carry this series on. You’re creating what I always set out to make (northern England inspired) before I resort to mass gridding to satisfy some demand issue.

As for whether to keep building in St Luke or start a new city... go where inspiration takes you! If there's some mod that would fit well with this city, or if you have an idea to use the dlc stuff that doesn't fit here and needs to go somewhere else, it will all look fantastic and we'll all love it

I would love to hear more of your geo - and urban political thoughts in your commentary, especially since it’s something you’ve studied and work with. Mixing nuanced and advanced takes, that is relevant for both our times and the game, with your relaxing and amazing gameplay would be such a breath of fresh air. Either way you’re so amazing at what you do, that’s why we are fine with getting fed breadcrumbs haha

Hi Silvarret, message here from a historian specialized in settlement history. Roads and paths did rarely "organically grow" in the UK. They rather were either inherited from an older pre-stage (medieval, roman, celtic, prehistoric) or were planned in the same way as most core settlement plans (layout and building) were planned in the Anglo-Saxon period. I consider it a "New World myth" that European cities have grown organically. Also our forebears in the medieval period and earlier were very careful in planning out any kind of building development before committing to the resource investment that is colonizing a patch of wilderness.
@Silvarret

Hey, thanks for the interesting insight! That makes sense. But wouldn't a lot of modern day cities have grown somewhat organically post-industrial revolution? And wouldn't the older pre-stages have formed somewhat organically over centuries?

@@Silvarret From that perspective, yes, with the caveat that each expansion was on its own a premeditated negotiated "development" plan that often required "land sale", "community approval" and some sort of "government permit" in the same way as would happen now. When you "zoom out", the city grew from an earlier core but I have trouble calling this growth "organic" when all these gradual additions were the result of historical planning and building initiatives that were often carried out in phases. I once wrote a pop sci piece on this titled "Why medieval city-builder video games are historically inaccurate".

I reckon St Lukes is a great vanilla build: it showcases what you can do with just the basic system. As such I'd say keep it that way - do as much as you want with it but strike out with a new build for showcasing any modded stuff. Maybe come back to St Lukes as and when DLCs come out. The port area instantly springs to mind for example. Anyway, it's great to see the place again, since it can't be seen on Google Earth, despite looking like that's what we're seeing.

What the game needs is terrace houses as low density units. The terrace or row housing currently in the game is a higher density than what most terrace housing in the UK is.

As someone that always grew up in mountainous cities (or at least hilly) visiting the Netherlands really got on my nerves after a while, so flat and no shade unless human made (just a few single file trees along roads or buildings), and even that you can see so far got on my nerves, when you see something and think 'oh let's go there', but in reality it is very far, but because nothing is in the way you can just see it. Just my rant about rural Netherlands, but when it comes to traffic infrastructure it felt even hilarious crossing from Belgium into the Netherlands, because the Netherlands is so far above in quality and thoughtfulness in terms of planning.
