True! Breakdowns are rare, and if they break they are easy to get running again, in my 2 years of ownership (ph1 1.6 8v with 89hp) i had many things (mostly rust) Gearbox cracked main issue, it still runs great with a gearbox swap, did the swap with 1 friend and basic tools including clut kit :)

Great video! I have a 1.1i Asics from 2001. Not the sportiest... But back then, and still today... 60HP on that weight makes it go rather nippy! The chassis is pretty much identical to that of the sport models and therefore, if you do nothing but fit some alloy's with a little wider and lower profile tires on it like I have, it is absolutely no less fun in corners! (14" and not too wide, don't forget it does not have the widened wheel arches) It puts a lot of modern cars to shame in corners! I would go for a 16V if I wouldn't spend all my money on the 1989 BX 19 TRI that I have as well... So if you need to go cheap... I paid €400,- for my Saxo in pretty good condition, it has done just about 280.000KM now, with very little maintenance so far, and even less to come... and I am absolutely convinced, you cannot buy a car today, for less than 500 euro's, except a 106, that offers this combination of handling and comfort... And is this much fun to drive... It really has a character, and I drive it with as much pleasure as I drive my BX. Though be it for different reasons ;-P

Great video like always ! The Saxo is a great little car and like you said she so close to the 205 gti spirit . It's a shame that Citroen do not keep that sport spirit in there cars today . For me the last car they made that's worth talking about is the C2 vts after they screw up ! Ds3 with a bwm motor ???? And with all the problems that it had . In France the only car brand that's is really in to making sport cars today is Renault . Yep Sebastien Loeb and Citroen but naf all for the customers . Sorry but i'm pissed off with french car brands that forget what made them famous 205 gti , ax sport , bx sport , visa mille piste ......... And today they do nothing to keep that little flame alive . I really regret the 90's . But love your videos

Nice video! Proud dutch owner of saxo ph1 with the lowest 1.6 8v engine (89hp 135nm from 99), own the car for almost 2 years now, still in love, car will go soon on the dyno because the guesses are it will reach ofer the 100hp, to confirm it ofc it will get on the dyno, The reason why the saxo is faster than the 106 to the 100 is because Citroën wanted to beat the 106gti acceleration, The 106 is lighter than a saxo in general, Citroën wanted to beat the 106 GTI and went for a gearbox that could go in second 100, just to beat the 106GTI, the 106GTi loses his time to shift from 2nd to 3rd just to reach 100. (correct me if im wrong) this is what i heard and actually can confirm, my 8v gearbox cracked, have now a 106 GTI gearbox on my saxo 8v, i can confirm the gearbox is shorter than my usual 8v box! I am a dutchie to, if your intrested in my Saxo let me know! Would love to see my Car on your channel!

i Always nice to get to know other Saxo fans! I'm curious to know the dyno results. The 16v gearbox is not the same as the 8v gearbox, so I understand the difference. But I haven't found a reliable source that can confirm that there actually is a difference in the gearbox between the Saxo VTS 16V and the 106 GTI. What I do know, is that the 106 GTI is slightly heavier than the Saxo VTS 16V. Just check the data. The Saxo's hood/bonnet for instance is a lot lighter than the 106 GTI's hood/bonnet. Especially on the ph1 Saxo, because of the shorter metal hood/bonnet with loose plastic grille instead of the integrated grille on 106 and Saxo ph2. You really feel the difference when opening either of them.

@@SoontobeClassics Good to get a reaction! I did some research and according to the gearbox identification numbers the Saxo and 106 share the same gearbox codes. No idea about the Saxo and 106 16v engine if these are the same, perhaps these have a slightly different ratio? I can confirm that a Saxo ph1 bonnet is much lighter than a Ph2 saxo bonnet. My Ph1 Saxo from 99 went on the dyno and the results are shocking, as u know the ph1 8v has 89hp and 135nm from factory, my car has around 200200km and is almost 20 years old. The results are, 107.7hp and 167.87NM at the wheels and the engine has 125.6hp and 189.07nm. Shocking results for a ph1 8v!

That would be a cool test! I've almost bought a Clio Williams a couple of years ago, but went home with a Saxo VTS 16V instead. Never regretted it, because the Saxo was great. The only dissapointment is that the value of the Clio Williams has gone up sixfold in the meantime, while the Saxo has only doubled in value...

As I understand it, the difference between the 106 GTi and Saxo VTS' acceleration times was purely down the way the tests were conducted. Citroen gave it hell for leather in the tests, as they wanted a mid-7's 0-60mph time (they actually stated 7.2secs to 60mph, but 7.7 to 100km/h (62mph), as that's when the change into third gear happens. As a result, the VTS had quite a high insurance rating in the UK (group 14), despite the fact that 'VTS' didn't really carry any issues with insurance companies. Peugeot, on the other hand, had opted to label their car a GTi (Citroen could have done this too, as they had previously used 'GTi' many times, but chose VTS anyway). Because a 'GTi' would carry an higher insurance risk, due to the issues with thefts or accidents in the 1990's, I've read that Peugeot made three changes from Citroen's tests. Firstly, they did the tests with a full tank of fuel, not half like Citroen. Secondly, they had a passenger, unlike Citroen. Thirdly (and crucially), they changed into 3rd gear BEFORE 60mph. Being that a gearchange can lose you anywhere between 0.5-0.75secs on a 0-60mph dash, it would easily be enough to add up to a second to the Saxo's time. And it worked, because despite the fact it was labelled as a GTi, the insurance rating was actually LOWER for the 106 than the Saxo VTS! The reality is that they're all the same in performance terms. Same gear ratios and engines etc. Only differences are trivial, like anti-roll bar diameters, dampers and interior specification (106 is marginally heavier, as it uses slightly heavier, better quality materials in the cabin). I can't tell you that's all fact, but that's what I've read from various sources, and it makes sense, because all Peugeot's cars in the 1990's achieved very low insurance group ratings. I remember the 306 1.9 DTurbo was only group 5 - same as a 1.1 Citroen AX!
@SoontobeClassics
@SoontobeClassics 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your extended response Richard! Those are all the same things that I have found and that I considered to be plausible. Just like you, I couldn't tell that it was all fact, but there were many various sources. On the other hand, there were also many sources telling that the gearbox or gear ratios were different (including Jeremy Clarkson in Top Gear) but I happen to think that that is not true. They are probably the same, but due to desirable outcome they have tested and registered the performance differently.
@SDH-g8g
@SDH-g8g 5 жыл бұрын
@@SoontobeClassics The gear ratios are the same, for sure. There are only a limited number of gearsets in the MA boxes. The ratios are the same as an AX GT, or 106 Rallye, or any of the sporting options (excluding the Saxo VTR). It's only the final drive that differs.
@SDH-g8g
@SDH-g8g 5 жыл бұрын
As regards the Clarkson piece, I'd say there's nothing more relevant in the piece than him highlighting it can do 60mph in second. It doesn't have a particularly tall 2nd gear, it's just the final drive was chosen to allow the ratio to achieve 60mph in 2nd gear. The VTR would too, if didn't hit the rev limited 1000rpm earlier!

Which is I love them very much.. ( I own several of that brand.. BX 16 TRS, BX 19 GTi, BX Sport Replica , BX Break TGS, CX Pallas Mk 1, GSA Pallas and GSA Break.. ) Well.. in my opinion Citroen have better aerodynamic, better weight saving ( they have known use a fiberglass and plastic materials in their body components.. ), better gearbox, better technology and also I believed Citroen traction better ( if I use Michelin tyre are far better than Peugeot 405 SRi compare to my BX 19 GTi in a drag race situation )

The difference between Saxo 16v and 106 16v are 3: - Saxo has tires 195/45 r15 with a lower rolling than 185/55 r14 of the 106; Better traction! - rear anti-roll bar in diameter: Saxo 21mm and 106 22.5mm (to compensate for the difference of tires) - Saxo is lighter

Ph1 Saxo VTS 16V was produced and delivered with 14 inch (Toulouse) wheels and 185 tyres, so the same size as the 106. Ph 2 Saxo VTS 16V was also produced and delivered with 14 inch (Toulouse) wheels and 185 tyres at first. It was possible to order 15 inch (Indianapolis) wheels with 195 and in later modelyears these 15 inch wheels became standard for the Ph2.

Terechte vraag!
