Trying to catch the driving experience on film is not that easy. Like the car does not want to give up its secret. Nevertheless, you can see how beautifully she handles speed bumps. Inside the car you won't even notice they're there.
Btw, the faster you drive, the better!

I used tor have a Citroen GSA and three times a BX in the 80's, they have the same suspension type as the DS, but a bit less soft. I can assure you that you feel the bumps if they are too steep, the suspension system sort of launches the car when it reacts to the wheels going up by adding pressure to the system, it will put your car higher on the wheels which is not nice when they go down again at the other side of the speed bump, it feels like the speed bump is extra high..

I once had a neighbour who owned a DS. The street where we lived was a one way street, in front of his house was a speed bump, the only parking spot he had was just in front of the bump. Every morning when he went to work he started the DS, let it rise and drove off. one Monday morning (after a particularly heavy weekend) he overslept In a hurry he jumped in the DS, started it and immediately drove away . . . ripping the complete exhaust (and some other paraphernalia) from underneath his automobile. Luckily he worked at a garage which made it easier for him to repair the damage.

Nowadays Citroën pretendes to innovate and doesn't innovate enough. They should focus on the comfort, they are loosing that. I have a c4 coupé and before I have had the Xsara, R19 and Ax and I have to say the C4 suspension is harder on the bumps than Xsara and Ax and it still is not hard enough to be a proper sports car so I would prefer it to just be softer and be a nice comfortable cruiser and not a weird "something in between". Another problem with my car and that I would not expect from one of the very first manufacturers to take a look at ergonomics and with such a huge tradition in designing instrument bins is the total mess of digital indicators on the car. Fortunately the car has the black panel/night drive mode and you can shout the dammed thing off at night. Citroën is not making bad cars, it is making OK cars when they could be doing amazing cars. I think the C4 cactus is on the right track and. Let's see how Citroën heads from here.

The only thing not to like on the DS is the brake pedal, or the lack of it the brake is activated by a button on the floor, only around 8mm of travel takes you from no brake to full brakes and the brakes are very good, this takes a fair bit of getting used to, the advantages though are in an emergency you don't have to lift your foot just swivel it sideways.

Rolls Royce bought into the patent and produced a lower pressure system with larger bore pipes. It is perfectly acceptable to say, for example, that you have an approximate idea of how you are going to be spending your weekend. Likewise, you could say that you have a “rough idea”. In this sense, “approximately” and “roughly” are synonymous as is suggested by the definition I quoted above.

Had a Austin 1100 with the same suspension. The front left is connected to the rear left. So when the front tire hits a bump it raises the rear tire thus keeping the car level. An added bonus to this is when you corner hard the two tires work against each other giving you firm handling. Simple reliable and adjustable, if you wanted firmer handling you simply added air to the system with a air hose.

They don't though. Some repair shops make a good profit of this myth and ask way too much for what is a simple repair. The suspension spheres are usually the only things that break on the suspension of these cars, and those are neither expensive, nor a lot of work to change. Never had a DS, but my Xantia's spheres cost 30EUR and take about 10 minutes to replace. A shop will ask up to 400EUR, just based on the fact that people believe they require expensive repairs, this on it own keeps this myth going.

Why does soft suspension mean high fuel consumption?
@jacquesmertens3369
@jacquesmertens3369 3 жыл бұрын
@@chrisburn7178 There's the added weight of the suspension system itself and the increased ride height, both of which have a negative effect on fuel efficiency. But the maintenance of the hydraulic system is really the worst part and the main reason why you would want to avoid a Citroen DS or similar. Nostalgia is fine, but you might end up seeing your car mechanic more often than your wife.
@Trainspottersd
@Trainspottersd 3 жыл бұрын
@@jacquesmertens3369 Sorry, but that's just rubbish. The hydro pneumatic system is not more heavy than a system with steel springs. Because it spares the springs and also the pumps for power steering and brake booster. Any Car with a hydraulic brake system and power steering does need a reservoir for the fluid. So all together you really even spare wight, because of all the different pumps are just replaced with some brake pipes and some little hydraulic valves. I did drive three GS/A and never had any fail with the hydraulic system. All you need to do, is to give the car the maintenance it will need as any other car. If you don't care about your car, any common steel suspension will break down too. But unfortunately the fairy tale of hydro pneumatic prone to failure is simply not eradicated with many people. The reason was a Problem with the Hydraulic fluid (LHS) which became agressive when it got over a temperature of 180° C (356° F). Unfortunately it took about two years until they found out the source of the leakage problem. Because if the fluid was in a normal temperature, like it was always in the Citroën 15 Six H which had a hydro pneumatic rear axle from 1953, it has never failed, because it never reached this high temperatures. But in the DS, this fluid was taken central for all the hydraulics in the car. This means Suspension, power steering and brakes were all together driven by a single hydraulic pump. So the fluid got hot, if the car was braked from high speeds or drove it downhill. Also the main pipe of the hydraulic pump was straight next to the exhaust manifold. So it came to overheating even at this place. After two years of research a chemist finally did had fund out about the circumstance, that the fluid became agressive above 180 ° C / 356° F. So they did change the fluid (LHS2), and this problem was solved. In 1967 when the DS became the twin headlights behind glass, they did change the fluid to the green LHM (Liquide hydraulique minérale = mineral hydraulic fluid). Since then the hydraulic system doesn't even corrode anymore and suited millions of sold cars world wide, without any remarkable failures. In reality a steel suspension even need more maintenance because of the shock absorber which will be worn out once and need to be replaced. This is also necessary with the spring balls wich should be replaced always all five together. 2 x front axle, 2 x rear axle and 1 x for the pressure accumulator. If you are used to do this work, you will need about 15 minutes to replace them, because you get on to it freely. Try this with any steel suspension to replace all four shock absorber.

I own an old hydropneumatic citroen, moved house, and then commuted to work for about one year in it, when I first drove the same route in a ford... bloody hell this road is bumpy. I never knew. Suddenly, the 30kph speedlimit that is installed in some places, starts to make sense. When you daily a hydropneumatic car, you don't realize how comfortable it is. Only when you then drive something else, it becomes quite obvious.

Having owned D's since the mid 60's just wanted to add a few comments. With proper preventive maintenance they are quite reliable and that was the main cause of problems. My 72 DS 21 now has over 650,000 miles on the clock with its original tranny, drive shafts, suspenion arms, front and rear wheel bearing and one engine rebuild. Mechanically the cars were build like tanks. Hydraulically I have rebuilt the HP pump once, resealed the PS once and replaced the front and rear suspension seals twice and the BVH hydraulic control system once. The actual suspension units (spheres) - if refurbished properly and kept at the correct pressures - will last 4-6years or so before needing rebuilding or replacement depending on the design of ones being used. Replacement, if you are doing for the first time will take about an hour or so using a floor jack and lockable chain wrench. With the introduction in 2000 with the C5 Cit had a, IRRC, a 10 year guarantee with the suspension. The problem with the pre 63 cars was simply that the needed rubber compound to make the early system leak resistance had not been invented. The D series 'Breaks' (SW to NA folks) was and still is the best SW ever designed. Fold down the rear seats and 4'x8' sheets of plywood can be inserted (at an angle) with the long end not overhanging the rear tail gate. Have carried almost a ton in the rear with no suspension sagging. Both my 69 SW and 72 Pallas deliver over 27mpg at normal freeway speeds. We do have a 92 series 1 XM. A very nice car but does not equal the ride comfort of our D's. For long distance motoring nothing today even comes close to a D in driving comfort. It was and is a combination of the suspension and seat design.

I was born in Austria and mom had a white Citroen which we had a accident with. Mom had the key stuck in her knee after that and I remember that accident very well even though I was still a young boy. We then got the blue Citroen. This would have been probably 1988 and I think the car was a GS or GSA. I don't know them that well just remember the car would raise up and the dash had a picture of the whole car on it I think which you don't see that often. Mom really loved those cars. Oh yeah they had a green one too in the 70's :). She also drove a yellow Renault 5 with the black stripe hehe.

On that note, if you want to make an effective speed bump, make sure the transition from road to bump is NOT smooth. That way a small bump will have a large effect and you won’t need to overdo the size.
@LuckyCharms777
@LuckyCharms777 10 ай бұрын
Define effective. Speed bumps are meant to slow traffic, not stop it. There are better ways to do than large smooth bumps or small jarring bumps. They need to combine the two… closer small smooth bumps/dips that will viciously rock the vehicle if driven over too quickly or numerous speed tables, especially at pedestrian crossings (raised pedestrian crossing).
@Dev1nci
@Dev1nci 10 ай бұрын
@@LuckyCharms777 Okay I'll define effective: Any traffic calming item that has a high efficacy at slowing traffic while providing minimal discomfort to users travelling at the desired speed. All you need it one speed bump that isn't either too aggressive or passive in design. But the holistic approach is often better, design urban space that encourages more relaxed driving by town layout, road designs and surface changes.
