So... this video shows the before and after reactions of a socially awkward city slicker attending a plain Mennonite church in the middle of Amish country. Seven notable observations:
1) Parking lot consisted of 30-or-so vehicles - ALL DARK and parked the same way. My colored Jeep stuck out like a King Kong-sized sore thumb.
2) Inside, genders are segregated. Women on the left with white bonnets and Little House on the Prairie dresses (girls had pigtails), men on the right with the same dark haircuts, white buttoned-up dress shirts, black matching pants and shoes.
3) Never before had I seen so many men taking care of babies.
4) Conformity and unity was the main theme for this type of brotherhood. Even the preaching was about herding in unison towards a common goal. Using a testimony of bringing in an outside herd of goats, the preacher warned congregants to be cautious of the dangers of outside herds coming in and sabotaging the flock. I picked a bad day to visit with that comment.
5) Despite coming close to blending in with my white dress shirt and gray pants, EVERYONE and their grandmother (lots of grandmothers were there BTW) knew I was an outsider. My tie and trimmed facial hair probably gave it away. They were friendly, had a smile on their face, and I even made a friend who gifted me a CD of their a cappella choir. He asked if I had a CD player. Apparently, that's a luxury item for these plain folk.
6) No cross or Christ symbolism inside the meetinghouse that I saw. Instead, there was a clock directly above the preacher's head. You want to know how to make church more boring? Put the clock above the pulpit and try NOT to look at it during the entire sermon.
7) Last observation was the sheer curiosity from children. They huddled together after service near the doors, SILENT with open stares towards my fuzzy, bald-headedness as I walked to my bright colored Jeep.
In the video, I mention there are three different sets of Mennonites ("worldly" Conference, Conservative, and Old Order). I concluded this was conservative, but it may have been a branch of Old Order nicknamed "Black-Bumper" Mennonites. Still more to learn.
Definitely felt like church from a different century.
