I’ve always liked that the went this route with Aang as a father, it’s such a very human flaw that makes so much sense for him. One of his defining characteristics through a lot of Avatar was his sense of guilt and loss that we wasn’t there for his people in the end, so like… of *course* he loses his sense of perspective and pours all his love and effort into raising his airbender son. It’s hard to imagine anything else happening. In my memory season 2 of Korra is kinda its low point, the most flawed of its seasons, but I’m really enjoying how much good you’re finding in it so far.

When you think of it - Aang never had a role model for parenting - he was raised by a community of monks but by the age of 12 he was totally on his own. So how could he have learned how to be a good father? Being a good person does not always make you a good parent.

Here’s the thing, though… the way they wrote him to be an imperfect parent is in direct contrast with his characterization on the original series and the comics. Prior to Korra, had he ever shown any favoritism towards a particular realm of benders, or even benders as a whole? What I saw was an eager willingness to adventure with anyone who wanted to join him. On top of that, after initially objecting to it, he supported and taught the air acolytes to keep air nomad culture alive. Why would he accept random people from other nations but not his own children who were half air nomad?

@@StephenKendall I have never read any comics or books, just the two animated series [and the netflix live action - but that is a separate thing] I see no inconsistency at all. Sure he has no favoritism about benders - but that has nothing to do with parenting. You seem to be confusing social views with parenting. What you are saying is like suggesting that because a person isn't a racists they must be a great father. Likewise saying that someone makes friends with everyone and is very popular does not mean they are a good parent. In fact, none of the things you bring up has anything to do with parenting. Also, what is said here in Legend of Korra it does not say he rejects his children, it says that he focused on Tenzin, not the same and also that was just the view of the other children - we don't have a detailed idea ... just that Aang seems to have had a favorite child whom he spent more time with. That is a description of poor parenting, nothing more, and it makes perfect sense.

@@TheFireMonkey I never said Aang should overall be a good parent; I said that his character conflicts with this specific pitfall. If you have a character that's never demonstrated any racist tendencies, yet they favor one child for having lighter skin than the others, that directly contradicts the previous characterization. What reason could Aang have had for only taking Tenzin to Ember Island? Do you really think Katara wouldn't have noticed the favoritism and corrected Aang? [Spoilers for later in Korra] If you want to reflect an OG character's flaws in parenting style, look to Toph.

@@StephenKendall Why would he be doing things specifically with Tenzin? That's not an issue of looking down on other bending or even favouring airbending - Aang has the job of restoring the air nation and that requires airbenders who have to carry on the whole tradition and culture, but since he is the only airbender, that means the whole future of the air nation is dependent on his children, and only one of them is an airbender. So of course he is trying to spend time teaching Tenzin to be a great airbender and also teaching him as much as possible about the culture and all of that. It isn't discriminatory, it is only myopic - and through the original series, Aang was often myopic. When he needed to get ready to save the world - what did he do? Well, a lot of the time he went and did things for fun, they didn't always work out that way, but that was his plan. It was only because Sokka and Katara kept pushing him that he ever managed to get things done because he always got caught up in the moment.

@@TheFireMonkey Tenzin wasn't talking about training, he was talking about vacations. What about Ember Island involved training Tenzin in airbending? Through the air acolytes, Aang demonstrated his support of non-benders upholding the traditions and culture of the air nation. Again, why would he not seek to include his own children in this endeavor? His arc in the original series dealt with avoiding responsibility and seeking out fun adventures instead. Ironically, sticking to this weakness should have caused him to take more vacations with his whole family and spend less time training Tenzin one on one.

In some of the other material, it mentions that Aang tried to teach Kya and Bumi about Air Nomad culture, but they weren't interested. My guess is that led him to assume that they wouldn't be interested on going to visit the Air Temples, and then leaving them behind got to be a habit even when going to places like Ember Island.

I honestly agree with the air culture to be with just Tenzin But I still think Amy should’ve brought his other kids along with at least some Vacations

Also I think you should consider the live action Avatar the last Airbender I’ve seen a few episodes and it’s totally different yet a little similar than the animated one and you get to see different sides like you don’t really get to see much of Ang‘s past in the animated but in the live action with real people, you actually get to see in his past with Airbenders before they all died out and I’d say the people act really good for the show. it’s on Netflix please consider it, I would love to finish it with you and I know that right now they’re making a season two and three

Let's hope that a civil war never breaks out and above all, given that we are in the hands of criminally insane people, that a nuclear war never breaks out. Ciao from Sicily, gorgeous Bunny 🌹
