most cops in Canada don't even know the gun laws ....I told a cop no I would not open my trunk or gun case at the side of the road for a speeding violation I told him he had to have a warrant because my trunk is my gun safe my guns were in cases locked and trigger locked. I told him I would not do anything illegal and he could not order me too 7 cops and a chief later I was released with a warning for speeding and it shocked me that none of them knew what to do or even what to say to me after I said what I did ....cops in Canada must know the law in order to enforce it...I'm in Hamilton Ontario

Or, instead of all that ordeal. Just show the officer your firearms so he can see the paper work is all lined up and be on your way. 10 mins of your time. Ive been pulled over ( in Toronto ) on the way to the range before, in possession of both restricted and non-restricted firearms. I was asked if he could check them, i obliged and was on my way in less than 10mins. Don’t be a combative and seem like your hiding something and things go well, be combative and act hostile/suspicious and you get what you encountered. Owning firearms in Canada is a Privilege, not a right. If you want to be a cowboy with an attitude there is a border just south if us you are more than welcome to cross.

Shaun Rainey once upon a time in my younger years, I turned around at night in what I later found out was a park in Simcoe. I was in search of Tim Hortons as the one I was attempting to visit was under construction. They assumed we were smoking dope in the park. After denying I had been in the park (as I didn't realize I turned around in it) they requested to Search my vehicle. I allowed them to. At no point did they look in my trunk.

The question that continually digs at my brain. Why, as firearm owners and law abiding citizens, do we have to continually walk on egg shells all the time? Bringing a rifle to a shooting range, arguably to have FUN, and worried about the public and how the police will react?? Why is there such a stigma and why is our law enforcement so eager to find "broken" laws? 20 years of gun control legislation has really fucked things up.

I have two points I ran into with firearm ownership, maybe they will help. 1) If you own 10 round pistol mags for your rifle, print out the magazine regs and keep it in your bag. The RCMP website has them spelled out. I have a couple of friends who had cops try to confiscate their guns because they (maybe intentionally) confused them with the normal 5 round law. 2) Know your park boundaries! I'm living in Calgary and often go home to BC and I take my firearms with me. Highway 1 goes through Banff national park and they do not allow firearms, even in transport. I have to be sure to plan my road trips to factor this in.

It has always puzzled me why, in the USA and Canada, they are so paranoid about sound moderators. I live in NZ, and the laws here are pretty draconian, but we are allowed, without permits etc. a 'silencer; on any firearm at all. They protect your hearing without having the limitations imposed by ear muffs etc. and are no problem whatsoever. Even hi-power rifles have them a lot these days (over-barrel type), and many NZ hunters use them in the field, not only to protect their hearing but also to avoid startling game as little as possible......

@SeverdSeouL
@SeverdSeouL 7 жыл бұрын
What an ignorant comment. Do you get all your information from CBC?There are about the same number of gun related deaths as there are car accidents. In Canada the number of stabbings are almost equal in firearms homicides. Criminals don't legally buy guns either. It's really irrelevant. There will always be people who will abuse tools in order to murder. All regulating guns accomplishes is making sure the state has absolute power over it's citizenry, so that whatever policy they pursue, no matter how tyrannical, or detrimental to it's citizens it will not be met with any serious opposition.

This was a very informative video. I live in North Carolina USA and would like to extend an open invitation to come down here and not have to deal with such non sense. Yes there are a hand full of states that have all but lost the fight for the American 2nd Amendment, but not in North Carolina. We have learned that as soon as you loose a right it is almost imposable to get it back. The misinformed and misguided officials that think criminals are going to listen and obey new laws that truly only affect law abiding citizens are so ignorant. Not only that they lead us to believe that the so many of US crimes that involve firearms are done with "hi capacity assault weapons" is BULL CRAP! But in the very slim chance you would find yourself defending you or your family against a criminal with "hi capacity assault weapons" , would it not be better to meet them on more equal terms? Well until things get better up north come on down here and have some fun shooting whatever firearm type or capacity or caliber you heart desires. God Bless

I really like your respectful, common sense approach. You're a great advocate for Canadian gun owners. I agree that while we may not like our laws, we must abide by them. I would also add that knowing the law is actually an advantage. For instance, it is illegal to have a firearm in a state that enables its operation on a highway and ammunition cannot be easily accessible. . However, once off the highway and in the back country, I take my rifle out of the case, remove the trigger lock, place the gun next to me with a mag of ammo sitting next to it on the seat. Not a loaded firearm, but handy enough so that if the deer/bear shows up, I'm ready. Perfectly legal. I personally would really like to be able to carry a sidearm when bow hunting and that is one of the areas I will be writing to my MP about. Thanks for all you do!

WOW !!! I truly feel for the gun community in Canada. It's stupid that a person can't shoot a gun on their own land. In my town. As long as you outside of city limits. You can shoot on your own land. It's the shooters responsibility to ensure the back drop of where they're shooting. Also, another residence must be a quarter of a mile away from the direction of where you're shooting on your land. Meaning you can have a neighbors home across the street. But if you're shooting in your backyard in the opposite direction...then you are fine to shoot. And no restrictions on what type of gun or caliber can be used. If a person has farm or ranch land, they should be able to shoot whatever and whenever they wish...it is their land. Seem to me Canada's Gun Laws are simply there and imposed to generate money for the government. And what's up with you are not permitted to protect yourself or your family? And you have to rely on law enforcement. If that's the case, then I want a cop with me at ALL TIMES. That law in itself would force me to move from Canada. NO Government will EVER tell me that I CAN'T PROTECT MYSELF OR MY FAMILY>

Yes my friend, criminals in Canada have way more protection from the government than legal and law abiding gun owners. However, it's judged case by case and with incredibly skilled lawyer and hundreds of thousands of dollars you may be lucky enough to justify killing/hurting a criminal who broke into your home to kill you and rape your family. You're supposed to call 911 first and with your last breath of life hold on to the phone and talk to the 911 dispatcher. Use a gun to defend your family and you end up in prison until your lawyers can try and do the impossible, to free you from jail. Kill them with baseball bat or a knife, you are in a bit better position. The method of killing the intruder also has a huge significance in whether you go to prison or not. Example, you kill the robber with a shotgun and you have some chance of defending your actions. You kill him with a handgun and you're in a heap of legal troubles, jail time, insane lawyer fees, guilty until proven innocent....Looking into moving to Montana, leave this hell hole once and for all.

Awesome presentation! Question for you please: If a restricted firearm owner owned a large property could he/ she shoot their guns on their properties? (I'm thinking NOT, unless you get it designated as a firing range but please do tell)

No which is super silly. I knew a guy who got his yard certified as a private range (or something I’m not sure exactly what it’s called) but it cost him a TON of money because they had all the rules about the berm height and all that and after a few years he gave up

QUESTION - Fast Forward almost 8 Years (July 2021) - Do you still need to get a SHORT TERM AUTHORIZATION to TRANSPORT if you have an RPAL & Restricted Firearms?

I think so. You still need an ATT if you are taking it anywhere other than to/from the range.

when I grew up everyone had a gun rack in the back window of their pickup. no one freaked out about it. you telling people to keep them out of sight is doing a dis service to firearms owners. the public should be made aware that ownership and transport is legal and normal.

Regarding the documentation requirements, you may want to add that those who are privileged enough to own an antique handgun should carry the letter from the RCMP identifying it as such if you're packing it in the bush.

I got in trouble once with the firearms office, I did exactly what you explained by moving last minute (just down the street from my old place) and didn't get a short term ATT for my glock and after I moved I called for an address change and they lectured me on the phone about the importance of keeping track of restricted firearms, and told me they were going to just give me a warning this time, but next time "bad things would happen" I got lucky but I sure won't forget next time.

I know, Our laws up here are quite rediculous, we need more gun lobby. Its one area I envy the US. And even with all the laws, people still get shot, just with illegal guns smuggled into the country, out gun laws do nothing, just disarm law abiding citizens and arm drug dealers in Toronto and Vancouver etc.

So about magazines. The obvious way around the 5 round rifle cap would be buying a 3D printer and producing to round mags marked for pistol use. That or for .50 beowulf caliber rifles. Heck you could produce 30rders as long as you have etched into them that they are for that mosberg bolt gun that takes ar mags. Intended use is a fun thing because it doesnt effect actual use.

And I thought the laws in New York State were bad. Here in Pennsylvania it's not at all uncommon to see folks openly carrying loaded handguns in Starbucks or Wal-Mart - you don't even need a permit or license of any kind. I knew Canada had tough firearm laws, but I never dreamed they were to such an extreme. I wish you guys the best.

Interesting tidbit about restricted firearms, I'm not 100% sure about this but, to my knowledge you can carry a .22 handgun for the purpose of dispatching improperly trapped animals under the authority of a Canadian trappers licence, and an RPAL. Again not 100% sure, I heard that from the man who taught me the trapping course, could be that the laws were changed since then.

Another story. My buddies and I were out shooting down the logging roads. They were drinking rum, I was not. They didn't get drunk as it was only a little bit. But on are way out of the logging roads was a road block. I got pulled over, the officer could smell the rum and I had to do a breathalyzer test. The officer clearly saw my Vz 58 on the back seat of my truck but didn't care when I passed the breathalyzer test and told him I was the DA for my two friends.

Thank you for getting back to me so quibkly but I am little nervous about the "asking for a friend" approach. The registration certificate clearly indicates the capacity of the firearm and I have never been approached by the firearm centre in all these years of renewing my PAL. Every 5 years for 40 years. I don't suppose it's an issue you could raise with them from a purely "academic" perspective as a qualified instructor???? I know of people who still legally possess many firearms which are now ruled prohibited weapons but were not at the time of purchase , even items such as 2 inch snub nose revolvers and .25 and .32 caliber pistols.

Hey there, I'm down here in the "land of the free" and I have some questions. What is a PAL, what is a "restricted firearm"?? Also, you mentioned pistols a few times, can I assume then that handguns are legal in Canada? If they are why then can you NOT use them anywhere but on a range?? And one more, why is mace and or pepper spray illegal?? Our women folk down here carry that stuff a lot for personal defense. It's almost a fashion accessory here.

Question for anyone that can answer, since I forgot to ask my instructor. During transport, I know that the firearm must be unloaded. My instructor told me that the ammunition can even be in the same case as the restricted firearm (and he threw some dummy rounds loosely into the gun case to show), but he didn't say if the magazines can be loaded or not, as long as they are not loaded into the firearm. The thought of loose ammo bouncing around in the case against your gun, kinda irks me. To try to make it short, the magazine is loaded, but not loaded into the gun. They are both in the same locked case. Is this legal? I'm just curious if this is allowed or not. I personally would err on the side of caution anyways and transport the ammo in a separate locked ammo box.

A wheelchair is a vehicle, as a paraplegic and a hunter it makes it hard not to discharge a firearm from a vehicle. The Canadian Firearms Act does not make any exceptions, the provincial hunting regulations do but I could probably be charged.

+Craig Blackmer Heard of a man in Northern Ontario who lost a leg and the use of his other one in an accident. Avid hunter and the like, usually went moose hunting near Soux Lookout or something like that. He got grabbed by Wildlife conservation and charged because he had his rifle case, with the rifle unloaded, mind you, attached to his wheelchair and a rifle case with 'easy access' into it attached to his atv, also there was no rifle in the case on the atv. I don't know how it turned out for him, but I also hear tell that there is a special permit that people like yourself who have unique medical conditions such as paralysis or the like can get that allows you permissions to fire a rifle from a mount on an ATV or your wheelchair. But once again, this is only stuff that I've heard, I don't know if its true or not; my firearms instructor told us these stories when I was going through the safety course for the PAL and R-PAL last year. Hope that maybe you can find something out about this that helps you out! Good hunting!

In Alberta, we can get a discharge permit that allows us to have a loaded firearm on an off highway vehicle that is stopped and off highway and discharge. Firearm. However at the bottom of the permit it says "this permit does not allow the discharge from any vehicle". So everybody is confused on what does permit allows us to do.

Go figure right? Leave it to the damned government to make something so convoluted and confusing that people have no idea what it really does for them, good or bad. Why does that sound familiar? *cough*mag-capacity-limitations*coughcough* :P I hope that things work a bit better for yah and all I can really suggest is to contact the CFO and ask him/her to clarify what the stipulations of the permit really are and get it in writing, not just taking word for it. You as well as I know how much the government love their paperwork!
