The Theatre Square is the cultural powerhouse of any empire in Civilization VI! It gains adjacency from wonders and other districts, and provides ways to get culture, great works, and tourism! It is one of the more difficult districts to utilize properly, however, with theming being one of the more misunderstood parts about a culture game.

A few notes on Art vs Artifacts: - For most civs, you can really go either way equally well. Some exceptions include Brazil (excellent Great Person spam), faith-generating civs (purchase a key Great Artist with faith), Kongo (bonus food, gold, and production from artifacts), and domination civs (lots of room to claim artifacts) - While Pingala is good at generating culture, and Liang will help get your appeal up from city parks, pre-GS Reyna has a promotion that DOUBLES all tourism from Writing/Art/Music in her city. Combined with certain wonders and bonuses that add extra great work slots, you can get a huge tourism bonus just off this promotion. In GS, this promotion has been moved to Pingala (replacing his nuke promotion), which makes him that much better for culture. - Archaeology is a very gold/production greedy option, as archaeologists do not come cheap. If you're having issues with production or need to focus on other aspects, you might be better off going with art museums to hold your passively generated great works. - Antiquity Sites (and Shipwrecks) are formed where a unit dies after a few eras so long as the tile is not improved. I have personally noticed this as artifacts for barbarians frequently pop up in former barbarian encampments. This makes early war with several civs really good, as you will be filling up your museums off of all the units you kill provided you aren't fighting in an area that is well developed. As a bonus, expanding your territory through domination means the antiquity sites will be in your domain, so you will not face the diplomatic penalties from digging up other people's artifacts.

Pro-tip on the theater square: settling it near a wonder increases its culture output. Any wonder will do, even if you aren't the one who built it. I like to forward settle the AI and when I see them constructing a wonder I will buy out tiles near it and plop a theater square or two next to their wonder. Later on in the game I can use all that production I saved up from not building the wonder myself to take his wonder.

Correction: Each antiquity site you extract prior to the modern era give you an era score point. Once you hit the modern era, you only gain era score if you take the "wish you were here" Dark/normal age dedication. However, Era score points are a definite advantage of archaeology over art.

@krustimolu348
@krustimolu348 5 жыл бұрын
About the chopping: - First, you have some bonuses that you can use for it. The most important for it is Magnus first ability (you don't need to upgrade him). - You obviously need Mining for chopping forests and Bronze Working for chopping jungles. You need other technologies to "chop" (read, harvest) other resources. - Then you place a policy card associated with what you're producing. The most typical is Limes (100% production towards walls), and then you start producing a wall in that city. When the item is only a few turns away from being produced (ideally, one), you chop the forest (or cattle, or whatever you harvest/chop, as long as it gives you production) and finish the item. The overflow production from the policy card and Magnus ability will accumulate on the next thing you produce in the city, even if it's not a wall for example, and if you produce the next thing in only one more turn, it will also overflow into the next item after. Note that this will be nerfed/removed on the next expansion, Gathering Storm.

@@YOUCEFPAIN I understand what you mean, but I'm not the best at explaining it. There are very fast ways to win, at turn 150 or before. - For culture, it involves getting as much great writers as you can, so you need lots of Theatre districts to generate the great people points. This way you not only deny tourism to opponents, but also culture to defend against your tourism on early. - For science, I really don't know. I think it's a balance between specializing a lot (for example, beelining a technology for an important bonus, such as Computers) or accumulate small bonuses. I tend to have a well-rounded empire, flexible but not excellent at anything, and I usually don't beeline anything. I'm not sure that's the best strategy. You also have to figure your way to play: to me, it is not interesting to try to win as fast as possible, I like enjoying the game until the late eras and play all the mechanics of the game in a single match. It's really up to you.

@dennisuerling899
@dennisuerling899 5 жыл бұрын
I haven't upgraded to Gathering Strorm because there are few additions in it that interest me. In Rise and Fall, archaeologist have one key advantage. Archaeological sites occasionally are on a tile you want to use for something like a district or wonder. You need an archaeologist to clear the site first. There are other reasons. The AI seems to prefer art museums (Is the AI lazy?). Perhaps you are up against culture civs or GP generators. In these cases, to get the artists to theme an art museum can be difficult to impossible or at the very least too expensive in terms of faith/gold to purchase them early. So, despite the down sides, you can get forced into archaeology.

I play by myself against the AI so I don't care about winning. I actually did win a game without really trying after watching about 5 of your videos. The problem is, the AI is constantly hounding me to trade or give them my museum items. If I don't it pisses them off and then I am forced to fight. Generally speaking I think the archeology museum is mostly for players who are behind in the CV. Maybe Russia's been hoarding all of the artists or something. Maybe you're America and have been going Dom but decided to coast to a late game CV with parks, resorts and film studios. You spam archeology museums and archeologists to get quick theming rather than carefully collecting art all along the game. Theater districts are a mixed bag imo. Usually you can use religion/pantheon paired with monuments to navigate the civics tree but if you get beat to religion or take a non culture pantheon you absolutely need to build a few to get the important civics on time along the way. If you're not going culture they can feel like a wasted slot though.

Do you know if there’s a 1-step way to move great works between cities that are separated by the scroll bar? Like in this case, how would it be possible to move an artifact from Sparta to Preslav? When I try to do it, it drops the artifact when I click the scroll bar, which kind of disincentivises building a lot of culture buildings since theming becomes impossible.

It’s better to build Archaeological museums in cities with good production because Archaeologists are expensive and it’s fairly wasteful to not dig up the Antiquity sites if they are there. Art museums are better for passive generation, and are easier to theme. Often they can yield more tourism and culture than Archaeological museums but again, if the Antiquity sites are there, it’s wasteful not to excavate the tourism they give you.

My problem with culture in this game right now is that Great artists and Musicians both feel a little bit worthless. Admittedly, Archaeology museums are more gold/production intense than art museums, however 3 artifacts in a museum is always 9 culture and 9 tourism, you can double tht to 18 tourism with heritage tourism. a Themed art museum is 18 culture and 12 tourism, however using heritage tourism only doubles the 6 tourism you get from the great works in the museum, not theming the museum. So if using heritage tourism, the amount of tourism generated by a themed art museum is the same as an unthemed archaeology museum. In other words, why bother building art museums when late game, where tourism matters the most, a worst case scenario archaeology museum will generate the same amount of tourism as a best case scenario art museum? Sure, the art museum gives more culture, but tourism is what wins you a culture victory, not culture. Let me break it down a bit further: If you're going for art museums, you're spending time generating artists, which usually means you're building theatre squares early. These are districts which could be going to science instead, which help you get to computers sooner. Later when you build theatre squares, you get archaeologists to catch up on tourism (remember, same amount of tourism when using heritage tourism card) at the expense of some culture, with even more tourism should you be able to theme the archaeological museum (27 tourism!). And this is before we even add in the likes of Mary Leakey who can make archaeological museums absolutely stupid, art museums dont have the same equivalent. Meanwhile for the great works of writing, who cares that you didnt generate those earlier? What are spies good for if not stealing the hard work your enemy has created? So thats amphitheatres sorted, museums sorted. And great works of music? Lol, who the fuck even cares? Broadcast towers are so inefficient to build and there's just more writing in the game than music. The only time I even bother with art museums is when im playing Russia and I have so many great artists sitting around and no cathedrals left to put religious work in, and even then that's to save producing/buying the archaeologist more than anything else.
@Sammy-gs9hl
@Sammy-gs9hl 5 жыл бұрын
Well you have some good points, but if you have 10-15 cities, good luck filling 10-15 archeological museums. You also want to be careful not to upset your neighbours by stealing all their cultural heritage and then be dragged into a late war. I found a good combination of both to be the most efficient way for my playstyle. In high-production cities I usually prefer archeological museums, since they have the production to also build archeologists. And in low production cities and the city I have placed Reyna go for art museums. I understand that science is very important for cultural victories, but culture should not be underestimated. There are some very powerful policies that come very late in the culture tree. You already mentioned heritage tourism, but there is also Satellite Broadcasts (+200 % tourism from works of music) and the most important one: online communication (+50% tourism to civs you have a trade route), which is basically half as good as computers. There are some significan benefits from building early theatre squares. If you can get a few of these down and russia is not in the game you can get almost all the great writers/artists/musicians in the game. Early tourism is extremely powerful in generating tourists. Especially works of writing, since they give 8 tourism with printing press. But wait, there is more. With all the great works you get you deny them to other civs, preventing them to generate their cultural defense. Just recently I played a game as Gorgo and went theatre square first in every city (except capital). I got every single Writer, Artist and Musician, and was generating over 1000 culture by turn 130 (granted I was suzerain of Antananarivo, which, which gave me like +40% culture). But to make my point, even though my science was pretty bad and I didn't even reach Steel (for Eifel Tower), Radio (Seaside resorts) or Computert by the end of the game, it didn't matter because I won the game anyway already before turn 160. That's how powerful those great works can be. I had 3 great works of music in my capital with Reyna. Each one of them was generating 24 tourism, that's a pretty good national park for comparision. And my great works of Art were generating 74 tourism, that was still more than 10% of my total tourism output. Maybe this will make you rethink your position on those great works and appreciate them more in your future games.
@alexandermoore2959
@alexandermoore2959 5 жыл бұрын
@@Sammy-gs9hl I can understand some of your points, but if early game is a struggle due to dickhead neighbours, likely warmongerers or more I would much rather be focusing anything BUT culture. Especially in higher difficulty games, where monuments serve as a "ok" stop gap in culture early game. Then later I can steal great works off of other players. Sure they have a larger culture defense but my stronger science early game actually helps me not get steamrolled, Great works don't defend my cities against AI's with significant early game bonuses. I understand how early stacking loads of theatres means other civs cant get a culture defense, unfortunately that doesn't help me survive if im near a terrifying scientific warmongerer who covets my lands. I would much rather hold off on theatre squares until later and then steal great works from my opponents. Yes, they have a higher culture defense, but I didnt have to put in the work of generating the great artists. Also, Great works of music are missing something. You get industrial era musicians but no reliable space to slot them till the Modern era. How do you get these musicians efficiently? Build loads of theatres. But then that takes away potentially from science that allows you to put them anywhere. I can understand that a mix or archeological and art museums are effective, but archeology is still outright stronger than art in every regard. An unthemed archeology museum with heritage tourism matches a themed art museum with heritage tourism. How is that fair in anyway? Yes there's less culture but you also get mary sodding leakey to add salt to the wound. It feel like a punch in the face to people who DO work to get culture and great works early game. Same as how these musicians you generate early on cant go ANYWHERE until modern era is also a bit of a punch in the face. Like... I understand it. The system just feels incomplete and slightly incorrectly balanced as it currently stands.
