Learn how atmospheric perspective in art creates the illusion of space in a 2D artwork. This can be applied to 2D artworks to show a convincing sense of space. Atmospheric perspective emphasizes spatial intervals, the distance between objects where as objects recede into the distance, they become less detailed, lower in contrast, and more blurry. Discussion led by RISD Adjunct Professor Clara Lieu.

My favorite movie backgrounds are Bambi and Sleeping Beauty. They used layers of glass paintings slowly sliding them in different times to get the feel of the deer walking through the forest. And in sleeping beauty I love how they echoed some of the artwork of old England. I love one scene in the Labyrinth where they used a painting to show the labyrinth with the castle in the distance, I sat there for days trying to draw it and get it to look real when I was little.

Response to 38:30 > I am an Electrician , and an Artist . The best of both worlds . I wish you would have talked about a Maxfield Parish painting . He is one of the top on my list of favorite painters . Your use of his work as the icon to this video made me take notice . My favorite technique in art is atmospheric perspective , both of oriental brush art , and Maxfield Parish . Thanks for this vid.

These are so great! I'd love to see a video addressing compositions for paintings (particularly landscape but portraits too) as there seems to be so many conflicting suggestions and 'rules' for them, like the (now unfashionable) rule of thirds and golden ratio, to the headache-inducing dynamic symmetry and its bajillion lines. I'd also love something on light and shadow: the colours of shadows, the hard /soft edge of light, the direction they both appear to travel in, how different light sources affect everything else; there's so much to consider. :O

@@artprof Lol yes, thank you,; I did find it and watched that one afterwards, the Michael Fassbender video that also talks a little about light. ;) I think I'd still love to see light/shadow/reflection questions in relation to landscape though, and maybe also interiors? Like, are the shadows of vertical things always vertical, is there a rule for what colour a shadow should be, is there a warm/cool relation to the light source; the difference between soft and hard outlines, etc. And the nature of natural light in different times of day, locations, seasons; omg there's just so much. :O *Super* excited for your future composition videos though, thank you!!

Not to be a party pooper, but that giveaway may be against the law. You can't make people pay for an opportunity to win something. You have to also let someone have the option to enter free, such as to send in your name and address on a postcard for free entry (give them a free option). You can be exempt from that in some states if you have a gambling license and pay a gambling tax. I would check with your lawyer. I love your videos by the way and good luck
