Electronic ignition, upgraded spark plug wires, more powerful ignition coil, etc. is in my opinion the best upgrade for the old VW air cooled. After watching the video I have just one small comment. Better to use wire separators, zip ties to bundle them together is not such a good idea. ;-)

Very informative video, thanks a bunch. Getting ready to do this today as a matter of fact.

Do you recomend that electronic ignition? Iam in doubt between accuspark and 123 ignition!

you don't explain why you turn the distributor body anti clockwise at 3.33?

Nice ad for PistonHeads too :)

So close to getting your sleeve in the belt! Tie wraps on plug wires is no bueno.

I bought one of your complete kits with vac advance. I’ve just got around to fitting it on my recon engine. There’s no mark on these that I can see for cylinder 1 and after turning the engine over, no 1 cylinder doesn’t sit in the factory position. Is this right?. It’s more at 60 degrees from the rear tin.

Use a stroboscopic timing light. With the vacuum hose disconnected and plugged, set the timing to 7.5 degrees BTDC at 900 RPM (idle). Timing should be set initially at 30-32° BTDC at 3,500+ RPM, vacuum hose disconnected and plugged. Maximum advance, at 3,500+ RPM, vacuum hose connected, with no load on engine (car sitting still), light throttle, should not exceed 42-44° BTDC.

I have a 1600 dual port--with dual weber 40 idf carbs...I have the Pertronis flamethrower II---but drawing the vacuum off of only 1 carb has made it difficult to time correctly. I noticed you are using duals---words of wisdom on vacuum advance on only 1 carb????

Thats not the procedure on vw beetles , factory in puebla mexico trained to adjust new beetles and combis up to 2003, but carbureted vw beetles where timed exactly as this guy in this video, professor always said in this engines only maximum advance matters, idle advance coul be from 7 to 12 degress, and is adjusted after max advance, is adjusted only with the screw on idle mechanism setting idle rpm after that u need to adjust max vacuum with the screw on carburetor until u get max vacuum with gauge, is a matter of play 3 or 4 times with both screws and then u get perfect timing on both, remember this engine needs to be timed and idle adjusted like that because altitude matters and this nice engines are not water cooled, but is a simple procedure, in delivery vw plant they give u max 10 minutes for car engine , usually 3 minutes all it takes , but with special wheel for 32 degres and spectropic gun, also vacuum gauge was in the guns as rpm meter., Still aniway is very simple procedure with regular timing light and autozone vaccum gauge or any other autopart store, so 7 degres idle not the right thing, also in plant a pretiming guy would do 7degres pretiming with test probe and the factory mark of 7 degree on the crank wheel but this procedure was only to start a new engine and check for proper noise balance and leaks, sometimes they adjust 32 degre max advance when they tested engines for max power when they doubt of new engine condition, so the final guy still rechek max timing and idle vacuum max and idle rpm, also next was a guy who adjust clutch play in a hole ramp , after that car ready to final detail inspection and sale, this cars were not tested on funny road inly selling because the cars were so confident to make it whitout that,. Fuel injected beetles were very simple only few sensors and minimal wiring added, both older and fuel injected engines were very efficient , and small maintenace required, this engines eated spark plugs fast since back then in bosh spaark plugs for air cooled vw used very soft metal for high spark, new spark technology woul solve that problem i think lasting forever,. Most recall problems this car was fuel line filter, since pump very small, many people used to run a hose from tank to filter ,pump and carbureted 10 mm hose or 3/8, other people found safer and better to mod and use cooper pipe instead original steel line, all this after some years of use of car due to contaminated gas or defective or non gas cap, they use to trow the cap and put a piece of cloth , so due to this water or humidity came to tank and lines and clogg those poor elements, but in general this engines and air cooled cars and vans where the king of carbureted cars at least mexico, this engines and cars are not simple they requires special techniques remember they are vw german cars , still today german cars brands use extra no needed complex things on simple stuff but once is all good they last forever, 80s probably the most selled car in mexico . Have good luck
