Filmed in FULL HD. In this video we see various clips of Class 55 Deltic, 55022 'Royal Scots Grey' on hire to GB Railfreight between May 2013 & roughly August 2015 for ScotRail EMU drag work. The video also includes moves with some NR engineering wagons as well as a Caledonian Sleeper move with the loco also seen as 55003 'Meld' & 55007 'Pinza' in some clips. Now this work has been taken over by the Class 73's for the Caledonian Sleeper.
Enjoy!

I'm not a train spotter in any way but those deltic freight trains are awesome, I remember as a kid seeing one clearing a section of disused track by smashing all the old TVs and shopping trolleys out of the way! Great memories 😄👍

Most of these seem to be carrying pairs of blue tankers with them... I can't help thinking that's for all the fuel seeing as the driver quite like to thrash it for the camera :) Love the sound, the 55s sound so furious!

Thanks, the tankers were used to add more brake 'force' with the Class 334 units. Must've helped with the noise with the extra weight

The Class 55 is beautiful; from an era before political moderation, climate awareness, noise sensitivity, the lot! It is a beautiful, brash, brut that doesn't care that it's the loudest, smokiest loco ever built. It says; "This is me. I have a job to do. You best get out of my way". Love it!

A Top Link Passenger Engine reduced to Freight work !! Am just pleased to see her out on the Main Line, where she belongs. Not restricted to 25mph on a preservation line. Give her a big load and switch that other engine on !!! Love the clag. Love the video. Big Thank you.

In all fairness this thing is is wayyy more efficient and "cleaner" than 50 trucks on the road :P
@davidellis279
@davidellis279 3 жыл бұрын
Some of these Deltics have serious engine issues with the amount of exhaust smoke they emit,the difference is trucks wouldn’t be allowed to operate if their emissions were this bad. ALL modern trucks have too have the latest emission control systems fitted before being allowed on the road and are tested yearly to make sure they comply with regulations which leads me to believe that you haven’t got a clue what your taking about,slagging our haulage industry off is NOT on,try delivering to your local supermarket with a train, somehow I don’t think you’ll get it down your high street,just face it without trucks we would never be able to build anything or eat properly,no milk, no meat no nothing,chew on that thought for a minute.

2:51 (at Duke Street) I amazed that Deltic was allowed through the tunnel section through Queen Street low level, and that it didn't set off the smoke alarms in the underground stations there. Special precautions had to be made before they could take the Caley Sleeper through there a few years ago when the main Edinburgh/Glasgow route was closed for electrification work (station closed for the night, very slow speed from the Class 67s hauling the train)
@GJ37425
@GJ37425 6 жыл бұрын
They did have issues in the Low Levels and I believe it had to coast through the stations but even at that a lot of smoke/fumes was still visible in the station for quite a while after it passed through which probably caused more problems. I can remember after filming that clip, leaving the station I was asked by someone who had come down to see if there was a fire there or not

I understand that, with both engines in use, they operate in sequence so that unless fully loaded one engine can become a bit oiled up with the first engine doing most of the work. I guess for the relatively low speed work shown in the video one engine (1650 BHP) was considered enough.

So were they pulling passenger trains and good trains all in one? I like this stuff but don't really understand trains/rail history (yet!)
@GJ37425
@GJ37425 7 жыл бұрын
It was counted as a freight service. They were pulling the electric passenger units from refurbishment in Kilmarnock to their depot at Yoker but due to a small section of the route it meant this loco had to haul them the full way. The wagons in this were used to help with the braking of the train.

The 66 is a heavy freight loco....the 55 Deltic a high speed passenger loco. Not really comparable.
@jameshadfield2897
@jameshadfield2897 6 жыл бұрын
I think perhaps the OP means that Class 66's are used for hauling most freight trains, and the Deltic was the go-to high speed passenger train ie. they were/are a common sight on the railways.

Not at all. The 66 is purely a freight loco. The 55 was built as a passenger loco. It is perhaps the Class 68 of it's day though - mightily powerful and competent in both roles!

Shot themselves in the foot scrapping these leviathan locomotives the 40s too if they only invested in restoration on the deltic fleet and even half of the 40 fleet then the need would have been instantly filled and we wouldn't have to rely as heavily on general motors for their locomotives
