That Schoolly D pattern is also the basis for "Kiss Them For Me" which I only picked up on when you added the "80sish" reverb. Nice. Adding the synth for context was a good idea. Loved the bjork demo! We've created a track that pays homage to the hunter with a similar approach to the kick and snare runs, I used a drumbrute impact and it works so well, very similar to a 909 in sound. Been tempted by this drum machine for the nostalgia factor. Look out for the track on our album in Oct 🤗 hoping some fellow drum machine nerds hear the reference

Never mind any comparisons on …”is the decay on the snare the same as a real 909” or “what about the open hihat” etc ..this sounds close enough to anyone who wants to make music rather than moaning and being a purist. You didn't do nine hundred and nine recreations? Cop out. ;) Technical question - in every demo I hear (especially side by side comparisons) the RD-9 sounds brighter than the original 909. Particularly the hats and snare. Is that because all the 909s out there are 40 years old and have got darker with age? Or is that one of those unscientific statements that goes round the Internet? Or maybe the crummy recording quality of some of the original 909 records has coloured our perception of what it sounds like. Either way, a low pass filter would match that in 2 seconds and it's inconsequential to an otherwise solid clone, but I'd love to know if old gear actually gets darker with age.
@Toymortal
@Toymortal 3 жыл бұрын
I would imagine it's the way they were recorded and saturated to tape. In terms of the older machines sounding darker, it's probably partly the internal components drifting out of spec and could even be part to the modern recreations using much more precise surface mount components. Possibly none of the above 😂. Love your channel as well as Starskeys - you is both great analogue gents.
@Toymortal
@Toymortal 3 жыл бұрын
Should also add that a surprising amount of early house and UK techno was initially recorded to 4 track cassette and another favourite was recording to the boomboxes of the time, due to the gnarly limiting of the built in automatic gain controls.
@StarskyCarr
@StarskyCarr 3 жыл бұрын
How d you know another 90 episodes aren’t in the way ;) I originally thoight 9 would be apt, then realised I’d programmed 10! Sound wise I’ll take a look bs the TR09 and cloud as they’re effectively new version of the 909 if you believe Roland’s tech speak. I was amazed by the hats in particular as they’re digital on e original and notoriously difficult to homer right. These sound the same (to all intents and purposes). The kick doesn’t have as much movement in the overall tuning but I never checked the snare … it just sounded right. But maybe not! Stay tuned for more exciting episodes of…..

Anyone know if the sync Jacks take type A, B, or C type 3.5 midi adapters? Can't find it in the manual ,online, ,or anywhere. Thanks!
@StarskyCarr
@StarskyCarr Жыл бұрын
I’m not sure what you mean.. but don’t the sync jack just use CV sync not MIDI? Is just a short pulse.? Unlike Dyn sync on old Roland devices which need an adaptor these just use TR cables.
@mattspazmatic
@mattspazmatic Жыл бұрын
@@StarskyCarr Ohhhh, so, if I wanna use the clock, to sync it to another device that uses midi, Like a roland MC-707, I can just use a ts audio cable? If that makes sense? I just want the two devices to be synced, so wouldn't I need to convert that TR cable into some sort of 5 pin?
@mattspazmatic
@mattspazmatic Жыл бұрын
@@StarskyCarr I'll try to ask in a less confusing way 🤣. So, if I'm trying to sync to a device, which only uses 5 pin (like an MC-707) wouldn't I need an adapter? The closest I can find to the answer was in an article which said the tip on a type A adapter is the sync, and the RD9 manual says the tip is the clock. Or, could I run 5 pin from the 707, and only send clock info to the RD9, and maybe have to turn off any other midi data in the RD9, so it only receives a timing signal?
@StarskyCarr
@StarskyCarr Жыл бұрын
Sync jacks are generally used for older stuff or eurorack. If a device has MIDI you would normally sync with MIDI. One device (or your daw) is the main clock and the others will either pick up the clock automatically or you can set it to be eg internal/USB/MIDI/sync. If both have MIDI - yours do - it’s probably the easiest solution. If introducing other stuff into the rig you’d have to consider those as well - running via a MIDI HUB or DAW with midi interface and multiple outputs, or if you’ve limited MIDI outputs you have to use MIDI through to pass via one instrument to another. I’m probably over complicating now - try MIDI first!
@mattspazmatic
@mattspazmatic Жыл бұрын
@@StarskyCarr No, you're not! I followed that actually. Ok, cool, thank you so much. And, luckily I have a few devices with midi through, so, hopefully I don't get too much latency. I'll get a thru box eventually, once I hook everything up.

There's no detune between the voices, and as the DCOs are locked tight to the same frequency you get phase cancellation between the 6 voices. This makes them weedy and strange. My 106 sounds pretty much the same as the 60 in that clip.

I thought of that one too… an easy copy but it’s got the DMX drum sounds (or something) playing alongside the bass which confuses things a little. I was tempted though.

@@StarskyCarr It's a Yamaha RX120. If I understood it correctly its instrument samples were triggered by the SQ80 bassline MIDI notes of the song. >> kzfaq.info/get/bejne/gauUgcp72NeaaKs.html

Actually QY10 or SQ10 , my memory is so bad that it was neither of these , it was a flat looking thing and the front section looked like it was chopped of at an angle

Really liked the Radiohead and Bjork examples. The rest reminds me how much I disliked most of the pop music from the 90s. Long live complexity and expressiveness in music!

I did think about it but it doesn’t actually sound like a 909… too much processing to make it a good demo of the raw sounds.

I think I'm the only one in the world who just doesn't really care for the 909. I don't even really love the 808 either, mostly because it's been so overused. The 707 is by far my favorite, yet that one almost never gets remade. The snares on the 707 are just the phattest.

After watching 10 minutes of 909 sounds I cant hear these sounds any more. In an electronic music context the 909 fits so much better.
