My first car was an 1959 A40 Mk1 black roof mostly green body with occasional rusty red spots. Great engine used to get me from Midlands to Southampton no problem until on a trip back, giving a 19stone work colleague a lift home, went round a roundabout and a leaf spring gave way. Repositioned him and it got me home. Spent the weekend at my parents at a breakers yard, fitting the leaf spring, bleeding the brakes and then back to Southampton no problem. Those were the days eh?

And my first car too-a 1963 Mk 2. Endless journeys between Sheffield and college in Norwich. I loved that little car.

My first car was a £26 Mk1 A40 Farina. It had been hand-painted in white, looked rough but got me through my test at the age of 18 in 1975. My next four cars were Mk2 A40 Farinas which left me with a lifelong affection for these wonderful vehicles. Great video and well done for joining the Committee, nice to see young people getting involved and becoming the replacements for us old codgers!

They are superb cars, I dont think there are many better looking classics. When you consider the other cars being produced in the late 50s they look so modern and sleek. Thank you for watching and taking the time to comment 👍

My dad bought a '64 Mk2 Countryman from our milkman in 1977 for £40 to teach me to drive. Absolutely loved it. The carpet was shot because the previous owner had an elderly dog, dad and I made new ones from a big floral pattern offcut, we had just had the hall stairs and landing done. HTC755B. Happy days..

took 6 driving lessons in an A40, the 6th lesson being the driving test. That was in 1960. I still have a soft spot for that car.

Great selection of cars for your trip. Speaking of breakfast :) During our big UK roadtrip last year, when we drove from London to Gaydon to Chipping Norton to Bath, Lyme Regis, Stonehenge back to London etc etc we first stopped in at a fellow's house in Southam to pick up a luggage rack for our Midget back home in NY. They guy (Graham) has a gorgeous red 77 Midget he removed the rubber bumpers, rounded the rear arches, and generally did an amazing job restoring/modding his car. But he didn't need his luggage rack, so we bought it, toted it around the rest of our trip, and shipped it home as luggage. After picking up the rack and ogling his Midget, and paying due respect to his craftsmanship, we stopped at the Long Itch Diner on the A423 just North of Northam and ran into a cars-and-coffee breakfast event! What luck. Looked just like what you enjoyed at the breakfast in this video. Graham also has a car on display in the museum! It was in the background of your video from inside the museum the other day, two tone green larger car from before the war IIRC. You are absolutely the future of your club, and the more younger folks involved the better. The more outreach you can do to the youths the better, the more peers you can convert to the cult of the old car the better. It brings more buddies into the mix, more opportunity, keeps the parts flowing, the cars on the road, all that. These old guys are falling away into history, and if they're not replaced, these cars will wind up like Model As and Ts, where you almost never see them at all despite being built in huge numbers, so keep up the good work on involvement in the clubs. We recruited an 18 year old into the MG Car Club of Western NY Centre this year, and we've enticed younger members to participate more simply by engaging more, chatting more, meeting up more often to do basic maintenance at each other's garages, taking drives in the countryside, meeting at breweries, wineries during the week, driving to lunch. This year, we're even driving our little British cars in a parade. Not sure your parade culture in that area, but here most small towns have a parade at least once a year to support the local fire brigade or some holiday or festival, it draws thousands of people and is a great way to get younger people interested.

My Dad had a 1960 mk1, ocean blue with black roof, 7834 RE. When he bought a new Triumph 1300 I had it as my first car. I put twin SU carbs on it so it went better than the old Zenith one but the biggest problem was having to weld in new inner and outer sills when the dreaded tin worm struck. Sold it to get a Triumph Spitfire.

Actually, I think MY A40 Farina was 1961! Went everywhere with my mate, and bought it off him - when it decided to call it a day, and fall apart! How lucky you've got a decent car, with BLUE inside, unlike today's cars!

@rustenuts yes, I did have a lot of fun in the A40, but only while it was still my friend Jeremy's! As soon as I owned it myself, it basically refused to "serve" ME. It was Jeremy's car, and that was that! A bit like my Dad's WATCH he'd always had! When he died, it never worked for ME! It was HIS watch, and that was that!. The A40 would still be a good idea TODAY, but it would make a really pleasant car, if , like Morris Minors, (which were produced for longer) , someone would fit the A40 with the later Morris Minor engine , the 1100cc version. After all, it's just an enlarged version of the same unit anyway! But best of all, would the further enlarged 1300 job ( which the Morris Minor didn't live to inherit). BUT in later improved A - Plus form later. My mother had the Marina 1300 with this engine, followed by the Iral with the A - Plus version, which totally transformed things. A smooth engine, which it always needed to have been!

Hi 👋 I'm viewing from New Zealand . I was talking to a guy who pulled into a supermarket carpark in a green 1959 Austin A40 Fsrina. It was in good condition and he had owned it for a number of years. I like them, i did in my childhood in the 1960s.

To Peterphoto. I had a Mini - that was bright orange. UNDERNEATH. (So rusty!) Decided to scratch the floor (underneath) with a screwdriver, to find how much I'd have to scrape, till I'd get to solid metal. I DIDN'T. The rust went all through the floor - so I scrapped it!

I learned to dive in one of these cars and I always remember the instructor showing me that the join in the rear widow rubber was exactly in the right position to tell me where the kerb was when I had to reverse around a corner. I think the A40 was credited with being the first hatch-back.
@rustenuts
@rustenuts Жыл бұрын
What a fantastic story and reference point! You are right, the countryman version was the first mass produced hatch-back, quite remarkable that it then gave rise to one of the most popular body types these days. Mine is a saloon but with folding rear seats you can carry a surprising amount of cargo. Thank you for taking time to watch the video 🙂

Thankyou for the reply. For further clarification then if I am looking over my left shoulder then my eye is lined up with the join in the rubber and out through the back window then I just had to match it to the kerb stones.

My dad had a A40 Farina from new registration LDT614D or was it LGT614D? He undersealed it from new and it rarely got wet. It was sold after 25 years with less than 30,000 on the clock.

How many A40s still exist in Britain today, now between 56 and 65 years old? Is it the same engine as the Morris Minor whose exhaust makes the trombone sound?
@rustenuts
@rustenuts 9 ай бұрын
Hi Minimaxi. When I last checked the DVLA records it was showing as 72 cars. What that doesn't account for are any that are in existence that the DVLA are unaware of. The MK1 cars would have had a 948cc engine and the MK2 a 1098cc engine. You do find a lot now are upgraded, mine is a MK1 but with a 1098cc. They are fab cars and share a lot of components with the Morris Minor, Austin Mini, the Spite and Midget as well as its predecessor the A35. Thank you for watching!
