In this edition of #thedailydoug, I'm checking out some classic movie music. In May of 2023, our Patreon community put forth our favorite movie themes, and the theme to The Good, The Bad, & The Ugly won our poll. I never cared much for westerns...maybe I'll go back and check this one out! I hope you enjoy episode 601!

One particular habit of Morricone, especially in his cooperation with Sergio Leone, that distinguishes him from most film composers, is that he often wrote music based on the script alone, before even a single scene was shot - and he and Leone understood each other so well that Leone occasionally changed the pacing of a scene to have it match with Morricone's music. Where others compose music to simply enhance the scene, Morricone distilled the scene itself into music.

Operatic treatment. Love Harmonica's theme and how it plays together with Frank's bad guy theme. When those 2 have their fi al showdown, both themes are played together and they fit like a glove. Chyanne's theme music is very representative of a man on a horse. The female leads theme music is achingly beautiful. It is also used as the closing credits music. Way to go, Ennio!!!!

Had Morricone been an American he would have had a stack of Oscars, including for The Mission and Once Upon A Time In America, but the Academy likes to take care of their own. Of his six nominations, five were for US movies, ignoring the vast number of European movies for which he deserved to win. In the end the Academy was shamed into giving him an honorary Oscar and then the "oh, you're going to die" Academy Award for The Hateful Eight, which wasn't even deserved.

I have to respectfully disagree. While the orchestra was good, the tempo was too quick; losing a lot of the tension from the movie version. The use of piano instead of guitar for the arpeggios was very disappointing to me, and they were too even rhythmically, losing some charm and emotion in the process. It would've been epic if they included the last line of the movie though!

The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly was the final part of a trilogy of Sergio Leone films; all three were scored by Morricone. Masterpiece in film making and scoring. The Ecstasy of Gold is an iconic piece of music, you can hear it everywhere (even in Modelo beer commercials). Every time I hear it, it ends up bouncing around in my head for days. Also, can you imagine being a (I am assuming) classically trained singer then be asked to sing "wah wah" for a performance?

IMHO Ennio Morricone is the Puccini of our era. All of his sound tracks are terrific. My favorite of his melodies are the love theme from Once Upon a Time in America (Deborah's Theme) and Gabriels Oboe (the Mission) are among the most beautiful melodies of the 20th century. Vocalist Sarah Brightman convinced Morricone to allow her to set lyrics to the theme to create her own song, "Nella Fantasia" - a favorite of crossover singers with Operatic skills. The whole soundtrack from Once Upon a Time in the West is a work of art, the main theme just gorgeous.

I agree. Once Upon A Time in The West is an absolute masterpiece. I believe the only reason why the movie got (undeservedly) less recognition in the US was because Peter Fonda played the villain: That didn't please the audience because people were used to the actor portraying good guys. Anyways, Ennio Morricone's score is immortal.

Killer soundtrack, for sure. My favorite musical trait of Ennio Morricone's film scores is how he builds those quiet crescendos with strings (violins, etc.). Morricone was apparently inspired by hearing the sound of a coyote howling, which is how he got the fast five-note run at the beginning of every phrase. "The movie is a spaghetti western". Correction: the movie is the greatest spaghetti western, against which all others are measured. Well worth watching. The "flutes" at the beginning were recorder and ocarina. BTW, I saw a talk show on TV tonight which had soundtrack composer Hans Zimmer on it. He claimed that Morricone was his hero, and that no-one has ever composed film scores so beautifully.

Definitely see the movie. It's a great film, and the score makes it even more epic. The "there are two kinds of people in this world, my friend..." is a recurring joke from the movie (e.g. "...those holding a gun, and those who dig" etc). The flute thing is an ocarina, I believe. Some kind of vessel flute anyway. And it's a pretty good reproduction of the title music, wah-wahs, whistles and all :)

Rumor has it that Sergio Leone used to have the soundtrack already done before he started filming, so he could fit the camera movement to the music. That's how he got that astonishing station scene in Once Upon a time in the West, and several others

One of the underrated elements in this fantastic interpretation by my countries National Symphony Orchetra of one of the best pieces from my favorite music composer, Ennio Morricone, is the percussion/drums throughout. It gives that special train-vibe-sound to the whole piece that's also very front and center of the intro to the movie itself. I think Morricone would have loved this rendition. Another great thing is that Morricone often used strange instruments, I believe it was because he didn't have the budget for all of the fancy instruments other movie composers had. And the Danish National Symphony Orchestra sought out those instruments and incorporated them into their performance. Great dedication by them and great ingenouity by Morricone!

What a good interpretation. This music can move us. How not to be inspired by such good American melodies? Even Ennio Morricone was influenced. Excellent haircut. :)

Morriccone always refused this title, but I think he was the best Western sound track composer ever. The Leone Italo Westerns would not be the same without his music. Leone's visualisation and Morriccone's music make the whole thing ingenious.

You really gotta see the movie. Sergio Leone [director] shot in silent and did all the audio, including dialogue in post.... it's pretty wild. It sounds unnatural but he emphasises sounds thru this technique, like spurs jangling, doors creaking.... whatever.

Hi Doug - I cannot believe you have never seen The Good, The Bad and the Ugly. This has been my favorite movie ever! I could never watch it too much. When my ex-wife and I were married and I would watch it, she would leave and go shopping or something. This is because it is totally a guys movie. The movie is an absolute masterpiece. It is a very long movie but every minute of it is dripping with intensity. My ex-wife could not appreciate the intensity of it and just saw it as boring. To me this is the movie of all movies and my second favorite, in case you haven't seen it is "One Upon a Time in the West". You need to set some time aside and watch both of these. Also, I am rarely sick, but when I am home sick and recovering on the couch. These are the movies that I am watching. Hope you get an opportunity to see both of these movies soon. Enjoy!

Nice reaction. Yes. This is a pretty accurate recreation of the original score. Morricone is my favorite film composer and one of my favorite classical composers of all time. And I think the score for the second movie in the “trilogy”, FOR A FEW DOLLARS MORE, is even better. And the same argument can be made for ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE WEST.

Imo Ennio Morricone is one of the greatest film music composer of all times. And yes, he actually used voices in the original score. He did it in many of his compositions, especially for westerns. You should check out "Once upon a time in the West". It not only has the iconic harmonica part but also some great other themes and haunting melodies.

Oh, and the patreon who did the "there are two kinds of people in this world" comment was actually citing the movie itself, where that sentence is repeatedly said by "the Ugly" and "The Good" in different circumstances and with different outcomes: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/irGmnpeGrKuzhZs.html kzfaq.info/get/bejne/pp-jm9N5ps6cpZc.html kzfaq.info/get/bejne/gKuGhdto1rCwd6M.html

Not sure if anyone already said it, but the "flute" you don't know what kind they are are in fact not flutes, but it's an Ocarina, that's a typically italian instrument made of fired clay. Edit: Also, fun fact: Metallica (the world famous metal band) are such huge fans of Morricone and this score that they open all their concerts with Ecstasy of Gold.

Doug probably got answered it a thousand times, but yes, this is extremely accurate performance to the original soundtrack. And I wonder if he ever noticed the hanged person. The dollar trilogy is one of my favourite movie series that I almost never watch. They are a prime example of how you don't need to have constant action, you can give the viewer time to think and let moods sink in.
